• Line
– Lines connect two points and can be used to help define shape, make divisions and create
texture. All lines, if they’re straight, have a length, width, and direction. (Wilson, 2014)
– It is a one-dimensional structural device that attracts attention by moving the eye around or to
a specific area. Lines suggest action, direction, and movement.
– Straight – convey a message of stiffness and rigidity
o Horizontal – rest and stability
o Vertical – potential energy and height
o Diagonal – kinetic, movement and active
– Curved – playfulness and movement
• Shape
– A shape is the form of an object or its external boundary, outline, or external surface, as
opposed to other properties such as color, texture or material composition.
– Square – balance, symmetrical and it is considered sturdy and straightforward.
– Rectangle – the chief object of focus does not have to be in the center for the piece to appear
balanced.
– Circle - can overpower an image’s main message.
– Triangle – dynamic and active.
• Color
– Color or colour is the characteristic of human visual perception described through color
categories, with names such as red, orange, yellow, green, blue, or purple.
– The property possessed by an object of producing different sensations on the eye as a result of
the way the object reflects or emits light.
According to Bergeron
– Learners recall longer what they see in red
– Blue elements receive le of the learner’s attention
– Use yellow to highlight important parts or key words in a visual. People tend to look at yellow
objects first.
• Texture
– Refers to how a surface feels or is perceived to feeling.
– By repeating an element, a texture will be created and pattern formed.
– Depending on how a texture is applied, it may be used strategically to attract or deter
attention.
– Texture can be used to give emphasis.
• Typography
– Refers to the fonts, alignment, size, colour and spacing.

– Describes mass and volume.
