Air-Cooled Heat Exchangers
To provide a cooling air flow over the finned surface to
effect heat transfer from the hot liquid or gas inside the
tubes to the atmosphere.

New fans unit are now driven by Synchronous belt.

Mechanical Drives for Fin Fan
Cooler

› Direct Gear Drive System

› V-belt Drive System
› Synchronous Drive System

› With technological advancement, Synchronous drive

system is increasing used in Fin Fan Cooler to generate
cost saving from power consumption through its 99%
drive efficiency.

5
V-Belt Vs Synchronous Belt

6
Synchronous Belt Benefit

› Compare with V-Belt drive, below are the benefit to convert your
fin fan into Polychain carbon Volt belt drive:
› Reduce drive weight
› Increase drive performance reliability ( no slip )
› Increase Bearing Life because of lighter package
› Faster Installation
› Free Maintenance
› Energy saving up to 5% (electricity usage)
› Higher Horse Power Capacity for Long MTBF (mean time between failure)

›POLY CHAIN®
CARBON™ VOLT™

9
› Meets ISO 9653 test for static conductivity
› Matches current Poly Chain GT Carbon performance
› Blows away the competition with endurance of conductivity

10
Competitive Testing

› Loaded testing of major competitive rubber synchronous belts.

› Rubber belts loose their static properties throughout use
› IS0 9563 only tests brand new belts.
› Typical rubber belts that upon installation met ISO 9563
standards rapidly lose their conductivity once running.

1. Almost no re-tensioning of belts because of high

More Benefits modulus, low stretched tensile cords
2. Stable output speed due to no belt slippage
3. Reduce downtime due to less attention on

23
GATES DRAFTGUARD

Anti-Rotation device to secure free-

spinning (windmilling) ACHE fans and
prevent their backward rotation while
power is shut off.

Advantages
1) Secured fan allow maintenance work to
be carried out safely.
2) Prevent hard starts by allowing fan to
power up from a neutral, standstill
position, minimizing damage to drive
components caused by the shock loading
3) Easily mount to existing Taper bush or
QD on driven sprocket.

25
Fan Back Drafting and Safety Concerns

• Back drafting – with fan turned off, an external wind or air movement causes fan
blades to turn and belt drive to rotate
• Maintenance people working around the moving fan drive creates a dangerous
situation
• “Mechanic Solutions” of wrangling the drive to a stop and wedging screw
drivers or boards in the drive can create other safety issues and potentially
damage drive components

• Starting the drive up while the fan is wind-milling can shock the drive causing
accelerated wear to the belt drive and fan.

26
Gates Draftguard

Benefits of Gates Draftguard:

• Prevents back drafting, wind-milling of fans
• Eliminates hard starts during wind-milling
• Avoids damage to belt drive, motor, bearings and structure during startup
• Maintenance free bearings, greased for life assembly
• Universal, versatile mounting plate
• Flange plate counter bore accommodates ½ inch shaft protrusion without spacers
• Adapts to clockwise or counter-clockwise operation easily
• Compact, thin design fits under most drive guards
• Bright yellow color stands out for safety
