4. Remove the drive belts.

5. Remove the cruise control actuator and bracket.
6. Remove the alternator and alternator bracket.
7. Using a wood block on the jack, raise the engine enough to relieve the weight from
the engine on the right mounting side.
8. Remove the right engine mounting insulator and bracket.
9. Remove the engine moving control rod.
10. Remove the spark plugs.
11. Remove the five bolts and remove the upper (No. 2) timing belt cover with gasket.
12. Set the No. 1 cylinder to TDC of the compression stroke as follows:
1. Check that the hole in the camshaft timing pulley is aligned with the bearing
cap alignment mark. If hole and timing mark are not in alignment, turn the
crankshaft one complete revolution (360°) and align them.

13. Matchmark the timing belt with the camshaft timing pulley. Also, mark the belt
where it meets the edge of the lower timing belt cover. Loosen the No. 1 idler pulley
set bolt and shift the pulley toward the left as far as it will go, and temporarily
tighten the bolt. Remove the timing belt from the camshaft timing pulley.
14. Using spanner wrench to hold the camshaft timing pulley, remove the pulley setbolt.
Remove the pulley and bolt.
15. Remove the plate washer also.

removing the setbolt

16. Using a spanner wrench to hold the crankshaft pulley, remove the pulley setbolt.
Remove the pulley using a puller.
17. Remove the four bolts and remove the lower (No. 1) timing belt cover with gaskets.
18. Discard the upper and lower timing belt gaskets and purchase new ones. Make sure
the gasket surfaces are clean.
To install:
19. Install the lower (No.1) timing belt cover and new gasket with the four bolts.
20. Align the crankshaft pulley set key with the pulley key groove.
21. Install the pulley. Tighten the pulley bolt to 80 ft. lbs. (108 Nm).
22. Align the camshaft knock pin with the matchmarks on the oil seal retainer.

seal retainer

23. Align the knock pin with the groove of the pulley, and slide the pulley onto the
camshaft with the plate washer and set bolt.
24. Tighten the set bolt to 27 ft. lbs. (37 Nm).
25. On 5S-FE engines, turn the crankshaft pulley and align the 0 mark on the lower (No.
1) timing belt cover.

26. Install the timing belt and check the valve timing as follows:
1. Align the matchmarks that you made previously, and install the timing belt
onto the camshaft pulley.
2. Loosen the No. 1 idler pulley set bolt1/2 turn.
3. Turn the crankshaft pulley two complete revolutions TDC to TDC. ALWAYS
turn the crankshaft CLOCKWISE. Check that the pulleys are still in alignment
with the timing marks.
4. Tighten the No. 1 idler pulley set bolt to 31 ft. lbs. (42 Nm).
5. Make sure there is belt tension between the crankshaft and camshaft timing
pulleys.
27. Install the upper (No. 2) timing cover with a new gasket(s).
28. Align the two clamps for the engine wiring harness with the cover mounting bolts.
29. Install the spark plugs.
30. Install the right mounting insulator with bracket. Tighten the bracket bolts to 38 ft.
lbs. (52 Nm), insulator nuts to 38 ft. lbs. (52 Nm) and thru-bolt to 52 ft. lbs. (71
Nm).
31. Install the No. 2 engine mount bracket and tighten to 38 ft. lbs. (52 Nm)
32. Install the control rod and tighten the bolts to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm).
33. Lower the engine.
34. Install the alternator and alternator bracket.
35. Install the drive belt and adjust the tension.
36. Install the cruise control actuator with bracket.
37. Install the fender apron seal and right engine under cover.
38. Install the right front wheel.

Remove the engine control rod (1) and No. 2 right engine
bracket (2)

NOTE
To extract the engine bracket and control rod, you will need to raise the engine slightly.

7. Remove the No. 2 alternator bracket.

The No. 2 alternator bracket is held in by a bolt and stud

8. Using a prybar and wrench or SST tool 09213–54015 and 09330–00021, remove the
crankshaft pulley bolt.
