Impact of internet on education

IMPACT ON EDUCATION

The improvement in information technology has been beneficial in the educational aspect of our
economy as we know that education is the backbone of any economy that wants to grow and
information technology has indeed helped with the ease of studying through easy asses to research
materials and not eliminating the old and traditional method of studying in the class, but complementing
the educational system in a more advanced way. Information’s are easily passed from lectures to
students through the internet via Email and this also simplifies the interaction between students during
course work.

Although we still have other means of education which is the distance learning through the internet, this
is highly supported with videos of tutorial and are used by prestigious university to enable people from
different geographical location attain a degree which in turn creates the room for expansion in
Ecommerce.

Importance of education in school

An importance of the internet as a learning tool is significant. The development of Internet

technologies has raised the education level in all countries and it has changed the way students are
being taught at schools. That’s why it is very important for the present generation that they provide
internet education for their young generations.

Internet applications respond to students and other people questions in real time. Students are
seeing Google as a new Teacher and the Internet as a school. That’s why it is important for teachers to
use information technology in education
The Internet has been crucial in the evolution of our education system in various ways. Teachers can use
the internet as a modern tool for education. Education department should provide the infrastructure
that teachers and student can use to get benefits of technology in education

Students are always curious and creative by nature. They are smart enough to know how they can use
the internet to search for almost anything. It doesn’t matter if they are studying at a private school or
government school. But at the same time, there is a difference in the ways they use the internet for
education in schools. In private schools, teachers will teach about computer and internet skills to
students. The students note the homework that needs to be done related to that computer class. And do
you know how some students do this? They are forced to go to a cyber café with their parents to collect
data that they have to include in their assignments. This is not good. If students are taking the help of
cyber boy to collect the data for their homework I don’t think these students learned anything in this
process. But the one thing they do learn is that money can work wonders anywhere.

The teaching process that schools are following is not good and they need to use the internet as a tool,
not the source. The source is a student. Teachers need to explore the creativity in their student’s minds.
And then students can learn and solve problems using their own creativity and innovative thinking and
not by the direct work of parents/tuition. If necessary the parents can help with encouragement but
they should not do the homework themselves. Completing the assignment given is not as important as
the learning process that a child goes through while doing it. It is essential for parents to provide
computer and internet facilities to their children. It is not that easy for parents to pick up modern
technologies as fast as their children but it is very important that parents also know about the
importance of computers literacy and internet education.

In government school especially in India, the level of computer and internet infrastructure is very low. I
know government school or school in villages provide computer education only after 9th or 10th class.
Within that little time too, a government school student barely gets to learn much because there are 5-
10 students who are assigned a single computer. It is very difficult to learn this way. I agree that this is
the best time to teach them about the advanced computer skills but this is not the way to do it. The lack
of Information technology infrastructure in schools is a big question mark against Government policies
towards computer education. It feels bad to see on the news that computer teachers are on strike again.
This happens once a year. The government must think, how computer teachers can teach with low-
quality IT infrastructure in government schools and a small salary?

Related: Importance of teachers in our life

According to the Hindu.com news, Government school teachers are getting average Rs. 6,500 per month
instead of Rs. 10,000 prescribed by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD). Here is the
news from Odisha

This is happening in other states too because states don’t have their own IT infrastructure and they are
providing computer education by utilizing the services of private companies. This is a big political game
played by politicians and industrialists who are interested in making money by misusing the education
system in the country. And the victims are students and teachers. How can a teacher teach without
tools? How can teacher/students learn and practice? And that’s why parents are right if they admit their
kids in private schools. This whole scenario looks like a game played by politicians and industrialist for
their personal interests at the cost of children’s internet education in schools. The fees in these private
schools are very high but the parents have no other options if they want their children to learn about the
importance of the internet in education at schools.

I was the victim of these kinds of policies in my school times. I was in the 9th class at that time when I
started learning about computers in senior secondary school Darlaghat. I feel proud that I got my
fundamental education in that school from great teachers. But do you know that I used the computer
only 2 times in a year? One time was for typing (asdf;lkj) and the second time was to play spider solitaire
cards game on a windows XP computer. I always thought that the computer teacher was responsible for
what happened to me and other students in regard to computer and internet education. But later I
understood that it wasn’t the computer teacher’s fault, it was because of our policy makers in India
responsible for the education system. That was the year 2002 and today 12 years have passed but the
level of computer education is still low in most of the schools in India.

But I saw the brighter and positive side recently when a few days ago I asked my little cousin who is in
7th class in the Government school in a village (Chhamla) in Himachal Pradesh; what are you doing in
mobile? He said, “I am downloading games”. It’s amazing to listen. He hasn’t studied computers and the
internet in school yet but he was downloading games like a pro. The similar task is done by 70% of kids
after 2 years of age. This is the power we need to understand. There is immense hidden potential and
creativity in the youngest generation today. They are born with an intuitive attraction for technology.
They learn fast but are we giving them the best learning environment? Politicians often use famous
quotes or marketing lines such as: “Students & Children are the future of India” but how? Where? In
strikes, writing and producing anti-national slogans inspired by politicians? I hate such people who are
misguiding the youth in the wrong direction; even students don’t know what they are doing because
they are at a tender age.

There are thousands of things you can do on the internet. Education should be the prime purpose I
believe. Knowledge is everywhere and the internet provides us the facilities so that we can access what
was not possible in the past at the click of a button today. That’s why it is important to use the power of
the internet in education to improve the talents of students.

Uses of Internet in Education

 Students can search what they want to learn about by the use of Google or other search engines
like Bing, Yahoo etc.

 Students can learn and take online classes anytime and anywhere.

 Notes and researched paper all are available on the internet and just a click away.

 Students can get tuition online and they can watch Videos on YouTube related to mathematics,
English language, physics or any other information about any topic related to their school
homework.

 Teachers can use social media to connect with students and share motivational quotes as well as
subject related articles and notes.

 Teachers can teach by the use of animation, powerpoint slides, and images to capture the
student’s attention.
 Teachers can record their own lectures or topics on camera and upload them to YouTube.

 Parents can also see what their student’s teachers are doing on Facebook.

 Parents can also help children by watching the same topic on the internet. They also can learn on
the internet for their personal development so that later they can contribute to their kid’s
education. Here is more about it: What is the importance of computers in our parent’s life?

 Parents can interact, communicate or chat with teachers and school authorities about their kid’s
performance and attitude in school.

 School principals, teachers can create Facebook Groups to teach students. Here is more about
it: How to use Facebook for Knowledge

 Students can post topic and can ask questions about their topic on the Internet to get advice
from other teachers and others who are willing to teach.

 Students can connect with other school students for the same topic by the use of the internet.

The Internet in education can play thousands of practical roles to improve talent in kids. But this is only
possible if we are going to teach our students what they really need. You can’t explain an algebra lesson
on Facebook but you can interact with students about the topic. And government should pay some
money for teachers to use social media.

Related: Importance of Internet Safety

The Internet in education can expand the knowledge of students, teachers, and parents. Parents can
analyze what is most important to teach a kid in a particular time. Parents can research about the best
career for their kids. Teachers can research for creative ideas to teach students in entertaining ways that
capture the student’s attention and imagination. Students can use the internet to convert their
theoretical knowledge into practical. The Internet provides the facilities for students to do the
experiments, research, and development.

We are aware that all of this is not that easy. But learning and proper planning can help to speed up and
improve the quality of our Indian Education System. Courses and syllabus need to be updated by seeing
the demand for skills in Internet technology.

The Internet is a computer technology connected with millions of computers. It is like an artificial
intelligence so it means we have to teach students and people how to use it. The Internet is full of
advantages but there are disadvantages too that we need to teach and those need to be analyzed by the
governments at the state and center level.

The Internet has changed our living style in a big way. The Internet has changed our daily activities. The
Internet is challenging us in every second. And it is because we all are connected with Artificial
Intelligence. But it is important that artificial intelligence cannot dominate human and environmental
development. Artificial Intelligence will never control this world, we should have the controls and
education to operate artificial intelligence. Education is important for human development so the use of
internet in the education system can help us explore and gain knowledge to create opportunities for
teachers, students and for parents alike.
Importance of internet in our life

Importance of internet in our life is similar to oxygen for this tech world. It’s tough to be happy for few
people without internet. Today it’s time about online reputation, internet marketing, online business,
online degrees, social media presence and internet banking. That’s why the importance of internet in our
life matter.

Internet is providing directions and maps in few seconds. Internet is also a best time pass option for us at
the airport, in the car and train. Internet is helping us to find a restaurant and hotel. Even if you have no
idea what to eat today in breakfast, lunch and dinner then you can search best food recipes on the
internet. Internet is providing you freedom from food restrictions.

If you want to spend weekends and want to go somewhere but no idea then search “I want to go
somewhere”. And you will get a tour and travelling details on internet. If you want to by gift for your
family member then internet help you to find out the amazing gift ideas.

Internet relationships are in trends with clients and unknown people. You don’t need to feel lonely so
internet help you to make new friends and you can see what they finished recently. You can manage
your time with help of internet. If you visit friend’s house but doubts about weather conditions then you
can check the forecast on the Internet. Don’t worry, if weather is not suitable for you. You can say best
birthday, marriage wishes or all kind of best wishes by the use of internet. You can also do audio, video
chat.

Oh! You have enough free time at home but don’t use it in a productive ways. Then you can start a part
time business from home by the use of internet. Internet is amazing for housewives too, helping in
shopping cloths and accessories etc. Internet is great for all private and government employees because
of internet they are getting their salary directly in bank account. You can send and receive by the use of
Internet in mobile phones.

Now the world is moving with high believe on the internet towards cashless economies. Cashless
economy is great development if you see it from building to building, car to car, home to home, and rich
to rich.

Now you can say Internet is essential part of our daily life activities. But what internet is doing about
education and learning? Oh! So you don’t know about online degrees and courses. There are many
universities going online to educate the world. You can learn any kind of skills on the internet. Distance
education born again because of internet. In future I think no need to go school, college and institution.
The era of 21st century is under your finger. You can drag anything, you can touch anything, you can type
anything and you will get something exceptional.

So that’s now you can analyse and understand the importance of internet equal to oxygen. But I fear
that if our new generation will give more importance to internet then environment? If they are bound to
feel happiness according to algorithms results then? If they will don’t get the education by artificial
intelligence about the lap of nature then?

No No – We will teach new generations about the advantages and disadvantages of internet. But we
need to lead by example, not only by social media posts. I mean practically. For that we definitely spend
time in nature. We definitely plant new trees and show them the difference between the artificial
intelligence and human intelligence. Even internet teaches us how to use me for better.
Oh! Nice, it’s really very nice exploration about the importance of Internet. I am very interested to learn
more about internet in details. Can you explore world view about the role of internet in our life?

Afcoz! I will try!

Internet gives us freedom of options to access the news and media. News is a choice for internet news
readers. People don’t need to see default news or noisy political debates in which same people debating
for different topics each day. They can be intelligent but it looks like they are hired by news channel
based on debating contract. This is about TV. But on the internet you have option to see news,
subscription option for particular topic.

Two ways of news on the internet that is default news and customised news. Yes! Just search News on
Google and you will get the list of news websites. This is default. But it’s not necessary that the default
news is important to you. You have customisation option. Search on Google about anything related to
your interest for example: “Security Camera” and click on the news. In this you will get the news you’re
interested in. It can be latest or few months ago but its highly most beneficial method for professional
and online business people. If you’re security camera seller then the best informative and
knowledgeable news is for you about the camera, new products and new inventions.

This how important is internet for news readers and viewers. Internet speedup the development process
in news channels, print media houses. TV news channels, websites, news apps, news blogs are various
sources for internet users to get news. It’s totally user friendly but really challenging for news channels in
future to grow from the place they are today without innovations and new internet business models.

Social media, local news websites, bloggers, apps etc. are covering the news and faster than ever. News
channels and journalists today are analysing user behaviours, trends. It’s because of internet. Internet is
powerful and beneficial for everyone if used properly.

Newspapers are now E-newspaper because internet evolution. Newspapers are also getting benefits
from internet. They are monetising e-papers websites with online ad networks such as Google Absence.
News websites and news channels are getting high exposure on social media. This is because of internet.

The race of search engine top 10 results in which only high value providers, more marketing budget and
highly skilled people and businesses (more than artificial intelligence) people can survive. If we’re getting
value for our time, that’s how internet is important for Media and people.

Internet is important to learn new skills in less time without leaving home. You can find almost all kind of
Tutorials related to Internet skills, internet marketing, internet business etc. It’s not only that but if you
want to know how to make Makki KI Roti (delicious with Sarso the Sag) then go on YouTube. It’s because
millions of people are exploring their skills by using internet teaching platforms such as YouTube, Blog
and social media methods. That’s how we can each other help in the development of practical
education.

University and big funded private colleges, small businesses are taking advantages of World Wide Web.
They started online degree programs and courses. Developed countries are using innovating online
degrees and distance learning. This is how internet is important for the development of education,
beneficial for students and teachers.

Later you can read my written valuable article on Importance of internet in education at schools.
Shopping on the internet is really important for busy professionals. Earning and spending decision is
taken based on Time. Internet GDP or online businesses are around e-commerce business models.
Internet is important for business owners and professionals. Internet is making buyers life easy and
comfortable by introducing valuable products in low price with 70% to 80% discounts. It’s not only
beneficial for internet buyers and but also very profitable for companies to sell products online. In cities
and small towns businessmen’s are creating eCommerce websites and selling products and services
online. It’s also important for new businesses and entrepreneurs about the importance of website for
business. Such connectivity between buyers and sellers on the internet are creating new online job’s
opportunities for internet skilled people.

Today, students of India or any country don’t need to pay for high degree by getting loans from bank.
They can start their career after learning a small internet or business skills. Freelancing is one of old
method that is now in models of online jobs, remote staff and contracting etc. Digital Marketing and
content writing, branding and designing skills are more payable for creative youth of the India or world.

Internet banking is now a days trending in India. It’s good initiative by government of India towards
cashless economy. We are using e-wallets for daily need transactions. Digital money and online
transactions soon will be mandatory in India. Use of mobile wallets, mobile banking will very challenging
to implement. The purpose of such digital transactions steps to remove the corruption. Its good as far
privacy and security of users not compromised. It’s really good that if security of intent banking will be
given high importance from Government. If any account hacked due to banking software problems,
mobile apps hack then who is responsible? I don’t think governments will pay back to users for their loss
of money and privacy compromise. But in this case users need to learn about internet banking and
working methods. Users need to learn about the importance of internet banking safety and other
knowledge such as about privacy, cookies, browser caches etc.

Internet can play a great role to remove the corruption in India or the world. But governments need a
team of Great inventors and thinkers to implement such internet related practices. For example Bitcoins
(form of digital currency, not printed like Dollars, Rupees, euros, no one need to control) can be ultimate
currency or alternative of bank notes in which can also help users to do transactions online. Such
internet economy practices are important and it’s not without the use of computers, mobiles and
internet. We can’t imagine a life without Internet. But we need to use internet it in good ways and for
the development of nation and people.

Internet mobile users are growing faster than ever especially in India. To the get the advantages of
people’s interest, internet service provider are giving internet free. Reliance JIO is playing leading role as
an ISP for common people of India. In broadband services BSNL is leading with great unlimited
broadband plans for Indian people. Everyone wants to be connected with internet.

Internet provides quick information and freedom of options for users. Arts and literature getting new
access point because of internet. Innovative online business models are coming. People are approaching
communication with new level. Text, Audio and Videos chats are now in routine. Online marketing is
important for business more than offline. Facebook Ads, Google Adwords, Listing or Ads Portals, Content
marketing and Search Engine optimisation are important to utilise by all kind of business. Even political
parties are using Internet marketing methods.

Digital Education platforms are growing. Data research and to do survey are easy today because of
internet. Business decision or new products decision or prime times are presented after the analysis.
Tour and travel industry, retail industry, media, education, health and banking sectors getting high
competition and are bound to provide great values. This is beneficial for users. Here you can learn
complete article on: Importance of Internet in Business.

literate. And also help to teach and learn from each other about the importance of internet and its
benefits.

participate in environmental development practices.

Conclusion: No matter how important internet will be in the future. But we can live without Internet and
money but not without water, plants, food, land and nature.

Ways how internet has changed our life and do business

We all recognize mobile technology as the real game-changer in the creation of the world as we
experience it today. The hidden truth, though, is that there would be no smartphone without the
Internet revolution. We are the result of this revolution.

We can start with one simple question: Can you imagine your life without the Internet? Just close your
eyes for a moment and think about what life was before the web. You can barely remember that time if
you were born and grew up before the Internet. If you are a digital native, this task is simply impossible.

Millennials - also known as digital customers - will never experience a world with no connectivity and
mobile devices. Yes, there are still (small) areas of our planet not wired and cabled but - at least for us
living in developed countries - it is hard to imagine a life before Google, Amazon, Apple or Facebook.

If you search on Google (where else!), you will find tons of experiments or researches about life without
the Internet. They all come down to one single definitive truth: "I cannot even imagine my life without
the Internet or the smartphone. It is an integral part of who I am." (Gallup)

The Internet is still relatively young (it just celebrated its 26th birthday in 2015) and yet the connectivity
has already produced long-lasting effects. It all started with a cable plugged into the phone line, and now
we possess the entire world in the palm of our hand.

There is one exact moment that changed things forever, and that was when the Internet came out of our
home, held inside a small box called smartphone.

According to the Internet Trends Report 2015 by Mary Meeker, we have reached 2.8 billion connected
people in the world. In other words, almost 40% of the worldwide population is now online, at home
and on mobile devices.

Every single activity of our daily life is influenced by connected existence:

 More than 27 million pieces of content are shared every day;

 More than 600 million websites are online;

 More than 500 million Tweets are sent every day,

 More than 30 billion pieces of content are shared on Facebook each month;

 More than 5 billion items have been sold on Amazon in 2014, with 40% of those sold by third-
party sellers.

What is true for people is, even more, true for organizations. The way you do business today is
completely different from the best practices taken for granted only a decade ago. All certainties suddenly
disappeared, washed away from a stream of connectivity. The Internet has brought treats but also huge
opportunities, for those able to respond timely and unlock the power of emerging technologies.

The years pass by, but the rules of the competition remain the same: you succeed only if you can
understand what is going on, if you adapt to the evolution of technology and behaviors, and if you
answer to the unprecedented demands of new customers. Business and technology go hand in hand,
and so does the customer experience.

Any analysis of how life has changed may look like a trip down memory lane, but it also helps you
understand where we are all headed for as human beings, customers, and organizations. So, here are the
10 ways the Internet has changed (and will keep changing) the way we live.

RESEARCH

Where do you go when you are collecting information about a product or looking for an answer? Google,
of course. The Internet has become the primary source of information, and search engines the main
door to access it. Thanks to the smartphone, you have the complete knowledge in your pocket.
Education, essays, product comparison, self-improvement tips, technical details, diets, do it yourself,
lolcats, the Internet has it all. If you are a brand, you need to be there with meaningful contents.

COMMUNICATION

Do you still remember phone calls and letters? We have witnessed a complex evolution in the way we
connect with other people and with companies. First came the chat rooms and forums, then - especially
after the spread of smartphones - social networks and online communities. Face to face communication
is still important but we increasingly rely on wide circles of strangers to decide what to do and what to
buy. In the mobile era, communication is about building networks.

SHOPPING

The success of Amazon, eBay, and online marketplaces says that visiting the physical location of a store is
no longer mandatory if you want to make a purchase. Shopping for a particular item looks like a journey
across channels: you can see a product in the store, search for information online, compare prices
between retailers, make the purchase in-app and pick it up at the store. The disruption of the retail
industry always implies the renovation of the retail customer experience.

TRAVELS

Not so long ago, the essence of travel was the idea of discovery. Is it still? Today, you can know
everything about a place even before leaving home. And planning has never been so easy and cheap:
You have websites for information, mobile apps for real-time discount and offers, virtual reality for a full
3D immersion. Even when you are there, mobile technology is there for you: Uber for affordable
transfers, Airbnb for cheap stays, Google Maps to find the way, TripAdvisors for gourmet restaurants.
Who needs travel agencies anymore?

ENTERTAINMENT

Remember when you had to visit the video store to rent a VHS, hoping that the movie you were looking
for was not taken already? That is the past. With the Internet, you have everything you need in one
place, and rarely you need something physical (i.e. a Dvd) to enjoy it. With the emergence of smart TVs
and the new generation of gaming consoles, all you need is a connection, be it movie streaming (Netflix),
music (Spotify), the sports experience or on-demand personalized contents.

FINANCIAL SERVICES

Once upon a time, people had to visit the bank to check the most basic financial operations. That was
before the dawn of online banking, before the disintermediation. Before the ‘Uberization’ of retail
banking. Technology trends have forced traditional institutions to face the challenge of evolution,
transforming generic accounts into actual human beings. What they must do now is to stop focusing on
products and money and start caring about the retail banking customer experience. In the name of
innovation (mobile wallets, one-touch payments) and personalization.

RELATIONSHIPS

You do not need to know someone to love him/her. You do not need to feel the pressure of playing all
your cards in a few minutes while waiting for the bus. Now you can find the love your life - or at least
meet new friends - by simply downloading an app and filling out a profile. Be it dating or building
professional relationships, there is a place for you online. This evolution has consequences for
businesses: people now rely on a wider circle of trust, other people they barely know that can influence
their decisions, one way or another.

HEALTHCARE

In the Internet age, everyone is a doctor. While you should not trust what you read online, when you feel
symptoms of some sort, it is undeniable that technology has changed the medical experience and the
relationship between doctors and patients. On the one hand we have the risk of misleading information;
on the other hand, the emerging awareness that mobile devices can improve the quality of life and help
prevent diseases. Wearables technology is the main driver of the self-tracking obsession; connected with
health platforms (HealthKit), they will shape the future of healthcare.

MARKETING

When the way we communicate changes, marketing techniques change accordingly. If you try to employ
traditional marketing ideas to today’s world, you will soon recognize they are outdated and inefficient.
The reason is simple: customers have changed, their purchase behavior have changed. Even when they
are in the store, they go online to compare products. The success of proximity marketing is due to the
need (for companies) to engage customers with context aware contents, and delight them with
meaningful and personalized experiences.

EMPLOYMENT
Do you really need to spend eight hours a day in the office to be productive? Twenty years ago, this
questions made no sense at all. Of course, you needed to be there. Today things are different, and it is all
about the Internet. The evolution of web-based tools and the growth of cloud services have made the
physical co-presence unnecessary. We live and work in an ecosystem of constant connectivity, and this is
bringing employers and governments to a complete change of perspective, in the name of flexibility. To
improve quality of life and cut inefficiency.

Now it is your turn. Tell us how the Internet has changed the way you live and do business.

this modern era.

The Importance of Internet Service in Today’s Generation

The internet has undoubtedly become a huge part of our lives. Many people in today’s generation are
relying in the internet to do a lot of different tasks. In fact, wherever you go these days, you can see
people holding some sort of gadgets and using the internet to play games or search things that they
want. But of course, the internet is not just about entertainment. It’s also useful in many other things as
well.

Today, many students are using the internet to do research and complete their assignments. Since the
internet is full of information, most students use this as a source of education. In fact, there are now
even online programs and courses available, which people can easily access to study and learn other
things even while they’re at the comfort of their homes. Years ago, if you wanted to find something out,
you would have to run at a public library and look through a pile of books, which is very tiring and time-
consuming. But now, with just a few clicks of your mouse, you can already get any information you need.
Years ago, when you also wanted to buy something, such as food, shoes, or any items, you would go to a
shop or restaurant to get that thing you need. But now, you can easily Google the product you want and
have it delivered directly to your door! In fact, you can now even pay your bills and file your taxes online.
Hiring people you need is also made much easier with the use of internet. If you need a plumber or
a bookkeeper, for instance, you can conveniently search online, look through various websites, and
choose the one that you believe can provide you the service you need. Amazing, right?

But that’s not just something that internet can do. Internet is also very important when it comes to
communication. Before, when people wanted to speak with someone who lives in a distant place, they
would have to reach a phone and make a phone call. If they don’t have any access to a phone, they
would write a letter, which usually takes a few days to arrive. But now, there are emails and social media,
wherein you can instantly send messages to your loved ones. You can even make a video call and see the
person even if he or she is at the other side of the world! This advantage also benefits other industries as
well, particularly the entrepreneurs and business owners. If before, business owners would have to
travel overseas to speak to a client, now they can make negotiations even if they are at the comfort of
their own office.

There are really so many things that internet can do for us. In fact, many people in today’s generation
can’t imagine life now without having this technological advantage. This is also the very reason why
technology experts are doing all the best they can to improve our technology even more. Service
providers also promise to improve their service because they know how vital is internet to people’s lives
today.

place. They can not only write blogs as per their wish but can also publicize their work so that their work
reaches to most of the people and they get appreciated. There is huge number of websites over the
internet which allows you to write blogs. You just need to get yourself registered as per their procedure
and then start writing. And if your blogs are really good and so many people visit your blog then there is
chance that you might get elected to write blogs for big organisations. Blogging has reached to all new
level with the help of internet and is one such use which is beneficial to everyone.

10. Shopping

Yes you read it correctly. This very list starts with the point mentioned as shopping at the tenth place.
Shopping has now become one of the most pleasing things to do using the internet. Whenever you find
time, just visit the concerned websites and order the items that you need from there. Those items will
be delivered to you in best possible time. There is huge number of options available for a common
people to buy or to sell any particular item using the internet. Using internet now it is possible to buy
products from all over the world.

Internet and Social Media Awareness

The internet is a growing part of our lives, and students are being exposed to a wide range of content as
they work and play online. As a school district we are continuing to educate students about the risks
posed by irresponsible use of the internet. We encourage every parent to be a part of proactive efforts
to help our youth use their social media accounts in a safe and responsible way. Students also play an
important role in alerting their parents and school administrators to any suspicious online behavior that
they witness. Here are a few tips for students and parents to keep in mind as they spend time online.

Students
 Don’t make irresponsible, frightening or threatening posts on your online accounts as they will
likely result in serious legal and school disciplinary action.

 NEVER forward or re-post an inappropriate or threatening post or message that you see or
receive online. Instead, report that post and/or message to an adult and/or school staff member
immediately.

 Encourage your friends to be responsible internet and social media users.

Parents

 Be familiar with your child’s online activity, including all social media accounts. Don’t be afraid to
“follow” or “friend” your kids on their personal social media channels.

 Talk to your kids regularly about their use of the internet and social media, and create a safe
environment for your children to report internet activity or online posts/messages that make
them uncomfortable.

 Be aware of the consequences (legal and school-based) of inappropriate use of the internet,
including forwarding or re-posting of inappropriate or threatening content, to your child and
your family.

 Report inappropriate or threatening online content immediately to law enforcement or school

staff.

Computer Ethics

Ethics are a set of moral principles that governs an individual or a group on what is acceptable behaviour
while using a computer.Computer ethics are set of moral principles that govern the usage of computers.
One of the common ethic missed by many among computer ethics is violation of copyright issues.

Duplicating the copyrighted content without the author’s approval, accessing personal information of
others are some of the examples that violate ethical principles.

What is the UnEthical behaviour of students/teachers?

Digital plagiarism:

Plagiarism is one of the major forms of academic dishonesty which has always existed in education,
including higher education. For example, assignments submitted by students may turn out to be copied
from fellow students or could be taken over, in part or in whole, from existing published works. The use
of computers and Internet added to the means that students have at their disposal to commit
plagiarism. However, they make it much easier to do and much harder to detect.

Breaking copyright and software theft :

Throughout the society, it is well known that the illegal copying of copyrighted media (texts, music
works, movies and software programs) is widespread. Moreover, many people who engage in such
activity do not consider themselves to be doing something that is immoral. This is certainly true for
college students. And this attitude of students seems to match developments in the current information
age, in which the Internet increasingly functions as the most important information medium that people
use.

Improper use of computer resources:

Students and staff may have authorized access to computer resources, but then go on to use these
resources improperly. They may have a school/library Internet account, or they may use computer
system or computer network or computer software that is owned by the school, or they may use
computerized services offered by the school, and do so in a way that does not meet the school’s
standards for proper use of that particular resource.

For example, students may use their student account to run their own Internet business, may open up a
popular website or service that generates much traffic, downloads MP3 files, staff members may use the
school’s server or computer systems to download or view or store content that is either illegal or against
the school policies (e.g., racist or fascist materials or pornography) or members of the academic
community may spread computer viruses or worms.

Securing information privacy and confidentiality:

Personal information on public computers:

While using publicly accessible computers, students or staff may unknowingly leave personal information
on the public computers, such as cached web pages (accessed web pages that are left in temporary
storage on the disk drive and may remain there even after a browser is closed) and cookies (small files
that are put on a hard disk by a web site to identify users and their preferences), that are then available
for inspection by others.

File sharing:

The computers that are used by Student or faculty may contain software that allow files from computer
accessible to other users on the campus network and outside without knowledge of the owner, or they
may allow files to be stored on a central server that are then accessible to others without their
permission. This could allow strangers to read these files that may contain personal information.

School web pages and bulletin boards:

Web pages maintained by the school, by faculty or by students may contain personal information that
may access the privacy of others. Likewise, postings and re-postings (forwarded messages) on bulletin
boards or in other electronic forums may contain personal information of third parties for which no
authorization has been given.

The ten rules of computer ethics:

 One shall not use a computer to harm other people.

 One shall not interfere with other's computer work.

 One shall not snoop around in other 's computer files.

 One shall not use a computer to steal.

 One shall not use a computer to bear false witness.

 One shall not copy or use proprietary software for which one have not paid.

 One shall not use other's computer resources without authorization or proper compensation.

 One shall not appropriate other's intellectual output.

 One shall think about the social consequences of the program written or of the system designed
by one.

 One shall always use a computer in ways that insure consideration and respect for one's fellow
humans.

Ethical rules for the computer users :

Some of the rules that the individuals should follow while using a computer are listed below:

 Do not use computers to harm other users.

 Do not use computers to steal other's information.

 Do not access files without the permission of the owner.

 Do not copy copyrighted software without the author’s permission.

 Always respect copyright laws and policies.

 Respect the privacy of others, just as you expect the same from others.

 Do not use other user's computer resources without their permission.

 Use Internet ethically.

 Complain about illegal communication and activities, if found, to Internet service Providers and
local law enforcement authorities.

 Users are responsible for safeguarding their User Id and Passwords. They should not write them
on paper or anywhere else for remembrance.

 Users should not intentionally use the computers to retrieve or modify the information of
others, which may include password information, files, etc.

Internet Ethics :

Internet ethics means an acceptable behaviour for using internet. We should be honest, respect the
rights and property of others on the internet.
Acceptance

World Wide Web is not a waste wild web. It's place where values are considered in a broadest sense. We
must take care while shaping content and services and we should recognize that internet is not apart
from universal society but it is a primary component of it.

Sensitivity to National and Local cultures

It belongs to all and there is no barrier of national and local cultures. It cannot be subject to one set of
values like local TV channel, a local newspaper and we have to accommodate multiplicity of usage.

While using e-Mail and chatting

Internet must be used for communication with family and friends. We should not use the internet
chatting for communicating with strangers and should not forward the e-mails from strangers. And we
must teach children on risks involved by chatting or forwarding e-mails to strangers.

Pretending someone else

We must not use the internet to pretend as someone else and fool others. We must teach children that
fooling others and hiding your own identity is a crime.

Avoid Bad language

We must not use rude or bad language while using e-Mail, chatting, blogging and social networking, we
need to respect their views and should not criticize anyone on the internet and the same should be
taught to children.

Hide personal information

We should teach children not to give personal details like home address, phone numbers, interests,
passwords to anyone. No photographs should be sent to strangers and they taught to hide personal
details from strangers because it might be misused and shared with others without their knowledge.

While Downloading

Internet is used to learn about music, video and games by listening to it, and learning how to play games.
We must not use it for downloading them or share the copyrighted material. The same should be taught
to children, and they must be aware about the importance of copyrights and issues of copyright.

Supervision
You should know what children are doing on the internet and the sites they visit on the internet and
should check with whom they are communicating. Look-over their shoulder and restrict them browsing
inappropriate sites. Parental involvement while a child is using the internet and helps the child to follow
computer ethics.

Encourage children to use Internet

We must encourage children, students and others to gain the knowledge from the internet and use it
wisely. Internet is a great tool where one can gather information which can be used for learning.

Access to Internet

The internet is a time-efficient tool for everyone that enlarges the possibilities for curric- ulum growth.
Learning depends on the ability to find relevant and reliable information quickly and easily, and to select,
understand and assess that information. Searching for information on the internet can help to develop
these skills. Classroom exercises and take- home assessment tasks, where students are required to
compare website content, are ide- al for alerting students to the requirements of writing for different
audiences, the purpose of particular content, identifying and judging accuracy and reliability. Since many
sites adopt particular views about issues, the internet is a useful tool for developing the skills of
distinguishing fact from opinion and exploring subjectivity and objectivity.

Cyber Ethics

Cyber ethics is a code of behaviour for moral, legal and social issues on the Internet or cyber technology.
Cyber ethics also includes obeying laws that apply to online behaviour. By practising cyber ethics, one
can have a safer and enjoyable Internet experience. Cyber bullying is the use of information technology
to repeatedly harm or harass other people in a deliberate manner. With the increase in use of these
technologies, cyber bullying has become increasingly common, especially among teenagers.

Cyber technology refers to a wide range of computing and communications devices from individual
computers, to connected devices and communications technologies. Cyber ethics suggest the study of
ethical issues limited to computing machines, or to computing professionals. It is more accurate than
Internet ethics, which is limited only to ethical issues affecting computer networks.

Cyber Safety

Cyber safety addresses the ability to act in a safe and responsible manner on the Internet and other
connected environments. These behaviours protect personal information and reputation and include
safe practices to minimize danger from behavioural-based, rather than hardware/software-based,
problems.

Cyber Security

Cyber safety focuses on acting safely and responsibly, whereas cyber security covers physical protection
(both hardware and software) of personal information and technology resources from unauthorized
access gained via technology.

Safety measures for Ethics

There are four effective approaches who want to ensure they are doing the right thing online:
 Have a basic understanding of the technology

 Participate with your child online.

 Determine what standards have been established for in-school computer use.

 Create a set of rules; along with your child, relating to both ethics and safety.

As per the importance of information technology, and given the possibilities of unethical use of this
technology by students and faculty, schools/colleges should ensure that they have policies regarding the
use and management of information technology by students and staff.

Several ethical codes dealing with technology use exist and many schools have adopted "Acceptable Use
Policies" that include rules for the proper use of information technologies. Teachers, students, and
parents need to know and understand these ethical codes.

For children, the major issues surrounding technology ethics can be categorized into three areas: privacy,
property, and appropriate use. School related cases can be found in each of these areas.

Teachers need to develop learning objectives and activities that specifically address technology ethics.
Proper use needs to be taught at the same time that other computer skills are taught. Students
understanding of ethical concepts need to be assessed. Technology use privileges, especially those
involving on-line use, should not be given to students until the assessments show that a student knows
and can apply ethical standards and school policies.

In schools, one should have an Acceptable User Policy. An "Acceptable Use Policy" that describes the use
of the Internet and other information technologies and networks in a school. The rules in these policies
often apply to both staff and students. Everyone in the school, as well as parents, needs to know and
understand these policies.

An Acceptable User Policy may contain

 Not using the service as part of violating any law.

 Not attempting to break the security of any computer network or user.

 Not posting commercial messages to school groups without prior per- mission.

 Not attempting to send junk e-mail or spam to anyone who doesn't want to receive it

 Not attempting to mail bomb a site with mass amounts of e-mail in order to flood their server.

 Do not use computer technology to cause interference in other users' work.

 Do not use computer technology to steal information.

Kids and internet

For kids and teens, social media is an essential part of their lives, much the way telephones were
important to us at their age.

About 90% of teens have used some form of social media and 75% have a profile on a social networking
site, experts say. More than half of all American teens visit social networking sites every day. These
numbers are way up from just a few years ago, and there's almost no chance of them ever coming down
again.

There are plenty of good things about social media — but also many potential dangers and things that
you want your kids and teens to avoid. They don't always make the smartest choices when they post
something to a site like Facebook or YouTube, and sometimes this can lead to problems.

So it's important for parents to teach their kids how to use social media wisely.

The Good

Social media can help kids:

 stay connected with friends and family

 volunteer or get involved with a campaign, nonprofit, or charity

 enhance their creativity through the sharing of ideas, music, and art

 meet and interact with others who share similar interests

The Bad

The flipside is that social media can be a hub for things like cyberbullying and questionable activities.
Without meaning to, kids can easily share more online than they should.

One study showed that 9 out of 10 teens post photos of themselves online or use their real names on
their profiles; 8 out of 10 reveal their birthdates and interests; and 7 out of 10 post their school name
and the town where they live. Actions like this can make kids easy targets for online predators and others
who might want to cause them harm.

These statistics about teens highlight the dangers of social media:

 17% of teens say they've been contacted online by someone they didn't know in a way that
made them feel scared or uncomfortable

 30% of teens say they've received online advertising that was inappropriate for their age

 39% of teens admitted to lying about their age to gain access to websites

Concerns and Consequences

In addition to problems like cyberbullying and online predators, kids also can face the possibility of a
physical encounter with the wrong person. Many newer apps automatically reveal the poster's location
when they're used. This can tell anyone out there exactly where to find the person using the app.
And photos, videos, and comments made online usually can't be taken back once they're posted. Even
after a teen thinks something has been deleted, it can be impossible to completely erase it from the
Internet.

Posting an inappropriate photo can damage a kid's reputation in ways that may cause problems years
later — such as when a potential employer or college admissions officer does a background check. And if
a kid sends a mean-spirited tweet as a joke, it could be very hurtful to someone else and even taken as a
threat.

Spending too much time on social media can be a downer, too. By seeing how many "friends" others
have and viewing pictures of them having fun, kids may feel worse about themselves or feel they don't
measure up to their peers.

What Parents Can Do

It's important to be aware of what your kids are doing online, but prying too much can alienate them
and damage the trust you've built together. The key is to stay involved in a way that makes your kids
understand that you respect their privacy but want to make sure they're safe

Here are some helpful hints to share with connected kids:

 Be nice. Mean behavior is just as unacceptable in the virtual world as it is in the real world. Make
it clear that you expect your kids to treat others with respect and courtesy, and to never post
hurtful or embarrassing messages about others. And ask them to always tell you about any
harassing or bullying messages that others may post.

 Think twice before hitting "enter." Remind teens that what they post can be used against them.
For example, letting the world know that you're off on vacation or posting your home address
gives would-be robbers a chance to strike. Teens also should avoid posting specific locations of
parties or events, as well as phone numbers.

 Follow the "WWGS?" (What Would Grandma Say?) rule.Teach kids that "once it's out there, you
can't get it back." They shouldn't share anything on social media that they wouldn't want their
teachers, college admissions officers, future bosses — and yes, grandma — to see.

 Use privacy settings. Privacy settings are important, and to highlight their importance, go
through the settings together to make sure your kids understand each one. Also, explain that
passwords are there to protect them against things like identity theft and should never be
shared with anyone (even a boyfriend, girlfriend, or best friend).

 Don't "friend" strangers. "If you don't know them, don't friend them." This is a plain, simple —
and safe — rule of thumb.

Make It Official

So, how can you drive these messages home? One way is to make a "social media agreement" with your
kids — a real contract they can sign. In it, they can agree to protect their own privacy, consider their
reputation, and not give out personal information. Furthermore, they promise to never use technology
to hurt anyone else (through bullying or gossip).
In turn, parents agree to respect teens' privacy while making an effort to be part of the social media
world (this means you can "friend" and observe them, but don't post embarrassing comments or rants
about messy rooms).

Parents also can help keep kids grounded in the real world by putting limits on media use. Keep
computers in public areas in the house, avoid laptops and smartphones in bedrooms, and set some rules
on the use of technology (such as no cellphones at the dinner table).

And don't forget: Setting a good example through your own virtual behavior can go a long way toward
helping your kids use social media safely.

USING SOCIAL MEDIA IN THE CLASSROOM!

Social media, as I am sure you know, is a VERY powerful tool. You can even use it in your classrooms!! I
wanted to do a quick post on the ideas and share them with all of you fabulous teachers!! Social media
in the classroom is a great way to connect with parents and students

As much as we all want our students to go home and tell their parents all the wonderful, engaging,
activities that we spent hours to create, plan, and teach……..is that usually the case. NO Kids are

kids and they go home and mumble about their day or just plain say nothing exciting happened. HA!!!
Social media is the perfect way to allow your parents to step into your home away from home classroom
and really feel a part of your everyday activities and special events. Plus, lets face it. Your parents are
already ON social media!! Let’s meet them where they are. It is just the reality so why not use it connect
with families?

First up: Instagram! ohhhh insta.. I LOVE Instagram!!! Instagram is a fast, easy way to share pictures of
what is going on in your classroom! This past year I had a classroom Instagram (completely private) and
my parents really really loved it. I approved the parents who followed it and then deleted everything and
everyone at the end of the year. It wasn’t something that took me long at all to do throughout the
day/week & my parents loved getting to see engaging science activities, us taking Go Noodle brain
breaks, snow day fun, and school assemblies! I had my VIP students sometimes be our classroom
paparazzi and take some photos for us and upload them to Google Drive for me to post. I HIGHLY
recommend trying this social media platform in your classrooms! You can make it private, or just not take
pictures of your students faces: whatever your district prefers.
Next: TWITTER! Oh boy is Twitter FANTASTIC! Twitter can do everything Instagram does but 33094348
times MORE! You can post links, documents, pictures, videos…and if your school or district has a twitter
you can retweet their messages that you want or need your parents to see! EASY PEASY! The content on
your Twitter stays up for as long as you want it to and it is simple for parents to save it. I plan on having a
*public* classroom twitter this year. I will use it to communication with parents as well as connect with
other classrooms around the world! I will not show student faces in my photos..but again this is
something to talk to your principal/district about. What if parents don’t have or want to get a twitter?
GUESS WHAT! They can follow by text messages! They can receive every tweet you push out to their
phones without even having a twitter account. Amazing! They would just text “FOLLOW (your twitter
handle)” to 40404. DONE!

3- Facebook! Facebook is super easy to use for all of us and you KNOW your parents already have one!! If
you unsure about Twitter I would recommend a Facebook GROUP! I wouldn’t do a page if you want it to
only be parents for that school year. If you are a music teacher for example, a page might be better. This
year I will have a Facebook group for my parents. You can post pictures, videos, documents, and even
have events for field trips and other things! I am SO excited to use the FB LIVE feature to show my
parents exactly what we are doing at that moment in my classroom! I recommend making the settings
where only YOU can post and add people! You should also tell your parents to turn their notifications for
the group ON!

Lastly…Some of us are on SnapChat, a social media platform that has really taken off! It is a fun way to
post pictures and videos to your followers for just 24 hours. I don’t plan on using this in my classroom
just yet, but I know some teachers who are!

I have created some parent permission forms for each social media platform that I would love to share
with you! NOTE: these are in no way LEGAL binding forms. I just use them as a personal reference tool to
keep track of who can be in pictures and videos. I would still check with your admin about your rules in
your district. Click on the picture below to get these forms for FREE!

I hope you learned some tips for using social media in your classroom! I would love to hear other ways
you use or plan to use these platforms!! Leave your ideas in the comments below!
There are a handful of questions I can count on being asked at least once at every school in which I do
instructional technology coaching. I’m sure many of you have the same issues, so I thought I’d share the
answers here on the blog for you all, too!

How to show YouTube videos at school

The question:

My school doesn’t care if I show educational video clips from YouTube, but the district blocks the site so
the kids can’t use it–is there a way I can still show YouTube videos to the class? How do I ensure my
students don’t see the inappropriate content that’s related to the video?

Working around a YouTube block at school:

YouTube’s terms of service state that you can only download videos “if you see a ‘download’ or similar
link displayed by YouTube on the Service for that Content.” Though there are many free online sites and
browser extensions that allow users to copy/paste a video URL and then download the video, it is illegal
to use those services for YouTube links.

Try to see if you can find the video you’re looking for on Vimeo, TeacherTube, SchoolTube or another
online video sharing site that does permit videos to be downloaded. You can then save the video
in Dropbox or Google Drive so you can access it on any device. If the video was created by a company or
organization, see if you can find the video on their website, or email them to ask about your options for
classroom licensing.

Avoiding questionable content while showing YouTube videos:

If YouTube isn’t blocked at your school and you want to play video clips, you can improve the YouTube
viewing experience in a couple of ways. Viewpure will let you show YouTube videos without ads,
comments, etc if you’re worried about questionable content popping up. SafeShare is another great
option. If you or students want to upload your own videos, try SchoolTube or TeacherTube, which are
designed to be safe for use in schools.

Also, talk to your administrators about using YouTube For Schools, which allows you to customize what
YouTube content can be shown. The site explains: “School admins and teachers can log in and watch any
video, but students cannot log in and can only watch YouTube EDU videos plus videos their school has
added. All comments and related videos are disabled and search is limited to YouTube EDU videos.”

How to share computer screens between the teacher and students + connect iPads to the SMART board

The question:

I want what’s on my computer screen to show up on my interactive whiteboard (or on my students’

devices.) I also want my students to be able to share the work on their devices with the whole class via
our SMART Board. How can I connect our various devices?

Connecting the iPad to the SMART Board

The iPad 2 and later models will allow you to connect using an Apple VGA Adapter or Apple Lightning to
VGA Adapter (depending on which iPad model you have.) Connect one end of the adapter to the iPad
and the other to your SMART Board, and whatever’s on your iPad will show up on the board. Of course,
this means your iPad is literally tethered to your board, but some teachers don’t like to mess with apps
and mirroring, and so this is a simple solution. If you have a budget for tech, a step up from this is Apple
TV, which will let you connect the iPad to your LCD projector wirelessly, meaning whatever’s on the iPad
screen now shows up on your interactive whiteboard without any cords.

The option I’ve found most teachers prefer is to wirelessly connect the iPad to the computer that is
connected to the SMART Board. (I know, right?) This is usually done via an app that lets you mirror (or
stream) what’s on your iPad to the computer that is typically attached to your SMART
Board. Reflector offers a free trial; AirServer is good for Mac and now for PC, too; Doceri is free and
worth checking out.

Keep in mind that for right now, the iPad-SMART Board connection is a one way street. Everything you
do on the iPad can show up on the interactive whiteboard in real time, but you can’t do the reverse
(interact with your whiteboard and have it show up on the iPad.) Again, I know.

Connecting students’ devices and yours to one another and/or the interactive whiteboard

I like Splashtop’s Mirroring 360 because it not only works as a mirroring app for an iPad to a SMART
Board, but also allows you to mirror screens from other other devices.. and you don’t even need an
interactive whiteboard!

You can have students working with a variety of tools (iPads, computers, Chromebooks, etc.) and all they
have to do is select the teacher’s computer from the menu and start mirroring their screen to share their
work with the class. Connect the computer to an LCD projector and the whole class can see without the
need for a SMART board. You can also use Splashtop Classroom to share ANY application with students’
Chromebooks from your PC or Mac.

Must-have apps for literacy, math, and other content areas

The question:

We finally got some iPads! What are some good free apps or websites for teaching math? ELA? Science?
Social studies?

Focus on curation and creation apps

You might not like this answer, but here’s the thing with apps–they’re not like websites. You can go to
one free website and have kids practice hundreds of different skills, but there are very few free apps that
are that versatile. You’ll either end up spending big money on robust apps, or downloading dozens of
free and cheap apps for every concept you teach. It’s extremely time-consuming to look for apps and
test them out, and you can easily spend hours on this task for a single unit of study.

So, rather than looking for a single subject app, I recommend downloading a few great apps that allow
kids to create content and share their ideas. These are apps that can be used all throughout the year for
different subjects and grade levels. You can get tremendous value from your iPads with just
one screencasting/audio/video creation app and maybe an an annotation app for older kids.
For example, instead of looking for an app that helps kids practice elapsed time, download Show Me and
have kids create elapsed time problems for one another to solve and explain, or
download Voicethread and have students use pictures, drawings, and video to share their strategies for
determining elapsed time. These kinds of apps are open-ended, versatile, and allow you to differentiate
instruction easily. They’re also far more engaging and rigorous for kids.

Here are more of my suggestions for free apps for digital storytelling and sharing kids’ ideas. If you’re
willing to spend $2.99, I recommend Explain Everything, which lets kids create tutorials easily and
quickly.

Get up-to-date recommendations from a handful of great app curation tools

If you just Google the type of app you’re looking for (or run a search in iTunes), you’re likely to find way
too many results, most of which aren’t very good. I suggest subscribing to a couple of app
recommendation sites that are designed for educators. The creators of these sites review apps regularly,
suggest classroom uses, and give honest feedback about how well the app works with students.
Subscribe to their blogs or emails lists, and be on the lookout for recommended resources that meet
your needs.

I trust Common Sense Media implicitly and love that you can sort the app reviews by age, device, skills,
and more. I also like APPitic. I highly recommend that every teacher follow Richard Byrne’s Free Tech for
Teachers blog, which is a great way to find out what’s new and notable for all of ed tech, not just apps.
There are hundreds of app curation sites and tools, of course, but I’ve found that these 3 resources are
enough to get most teachers started without being immensely overwhelming.

Remember that more is not necessarily better

There is simply no way one person can learn about all of the amazing apps that are out there…and you
don’t have to try. Pick one or two that you’re interested in and that you think would give you the most
bang for your buck. Play around with them and experiment with different ways they can work with your
curriculum.

Don’t beat yourself up by thinking of all the hundreds of thousands of apps that are out there and you
haven’t yet explored. Of course you’re missing out on things! If you lived a thousand years, you wouldn’t
have time to learn every app that’s out there right now. But the only apps you need to learn are the ones
you need. That might only be a handful for right now. Add slowly to your tech tool box over time, and
use your students’ input to refine and expand your app selection.

The growing popularity and the pervasive use of social networking websites among our teens and
students is a fact we can no longer ignore. Unfortunately, many school boards still promulgate laws that
inhibit access to these platforms in schools and thus missing on huge learning opportunities for students.
Instead of forcing an unwarranted ban on these media tools why not embrace them and turn them into
learning hubs where our students can thrive academically.

Using social media in education has got such a huge potential and there are a variety of ways teachers
and schools can leverage the networked power of these tools to help students achieve better. Here are
some of the ideas I highlighted from the graphic below on how to use social media in class:
1- Facebook

 Use Facebook apps and groups like Flashcards and WeRead to make learning and studying easier
and more enjoyable.

 Make a Facebook page for your class where you can schedule events, post notes and remind
students of assignment due dates.

 Improve communication by allowing students to easily message teachers and other students
with questions

 Become a news source by posting status updates or tailor your feed to follow other media and
prominent leaders.

2- Twitter

 Track hash tags, memes and current events by setting up specific feeds the entire class can
monitor

 Create a feed for your classroom so you can tweet about upcoming assignments, events and
class news

 Connect with other classrooms, teachers and parents to increase communication and build
community

 Follow other educators' tweets to keep up with the latest teaching trends, get ideas and support
one another.

 Post supplementary materials like links to articles and videos so students can continue learning
even when class is over

Pinterest

 Search Pinterest for inspiring tips on how to organize and decorate your classroom

 Search, find, pin and organize images, projects, videos, store and more for future lesson plans
and projects

 Allow students to use Pinterest for presentations and projects. Later, set up boards to promote
students final assignment.

 Use community boards for group projects and brainstorming so multiple users can all save their
resources in one place
 Share ideas and collaborate with teachers and students from other classes and schools

YouTube

 Search for on-topic videos that can use in the classroom to bring lessons to life, making them
more memorable.

 Record your lessons and post them on YouTube so students can review them whenever they
want

 Take your videos to the next level by adding quizzes, annotations and more

 Teach students how to produce and edit video by having them film and upload videos to a class
YouTube channel.

 Curate organized playlists so your students can easily find and watch al related and approved
videos on a topic

Blogging

 Create a class blog so students can stay up-to-date on upcoming projects, due dates, events and
other reminders

 Publish student work on the blog, or have students set up their own blogs as online portfolios

 Encourage students to post on a class blog weekly to develop their own voice and work on their
writing

 Post daily or weekly homework assignments on the blog so students who were absent can know
what they missed

 Post discussion topics on the blog, give your students a few days to reflect on the topic and
comment.

10 ways to use Instagram in the classroom

Send classroom notifications

Many teachers use other forms of social media – like Twitter and Facebook – to share classroom news
and other notifications. Don’t overlook Instagram for this. Having a snow day? Post a photo of a blizzard
with a reminder along with any notes about what work will be postponed or due on a different day. Test
coming up? Post a photo notification and any other pertinent information. Many students will remember
the visual reminder!

Showcase students and student work

Feature a student of the week or month, with a short bio and some tidbits about themselves and their
work. Throughout the year, showcase various pieces of many different student’s work in as many areas
as possible. Either one can serve as a reward for good work, consistent effort, or another measure you
choose to attach to it. It will help keep students motivated to keep up their hard work!

Review content from class

Remind your students of some things you’ve talked about in class, to keep the concepts fresh in their
minds. Ask them questions or bring another call to action to the photo you post. For example, if you
talked about a historical figure in class, ask them who the photo is of, and 1-2 relevant items about that
person, have them post a photo of one of that person’s contemporaries, competitors, etc.

Share reading recommendations

Not all students get really excited about extracurricular reading. Get them interested by showing your
interest. Share books that you’ve enjoyed (that are appropriate, of course!), books that are relevant to
class material you’ve discussed, stories that have been popular with other groups of students, articles of
interest, and more.

Track student progress over time

Snap photos of student work throughout the year. This can serve to document the progress they’ve
made, and can be useful when putting together student portfolios as well.

Encourage and engage your students

Encouragement and engagement can come in all forms. When you’re excited about teaching and
learning, your students will be too. Whether you give a shout out to your class for a group achievement
or just try to get them pumped up for something school related, Instagram is a great way to do it.

Have a contest

Instagram contests aren’t just for businesses! Host a contest where your students share photos along a
classwork related theme to win – the prize can be as simple as being featured on Instagram! You can
host contests that require students to think and provide information relevant to class, or just-for-fun
contests, too. Who in the class/school posts a photo of them in the silliest/best/most outlandish outfit?
Have a writing contest where students use the photo you post as a writing prompt. The possibilities are
endless!

Document the year

A lot of stuff happens over the course of the year – document it! If your class goes on a field trip, take
some photos! When students participate in concerts, sporting events, classroom events, or anything else
school-relevant, share photos of these events. Both you and your students will be able to look back over
the year and remember the milestone events that took place.

Role Play
Have your students role-play and interact. They can imagine that historical figures used Instagram. What
sorts of things would George Washington share on Instagram? Was Shakespeare a chronic meme-
sharer? Who shared professional-related items and who shared more personal items? Have them share
as though they were a particular person and interact with other students also posing as other historical
figures.

Have students share relevant material

Your students’ interests don’t stop when they walk through the classroom door. Share things that are
interesting and relevant to both them and to classwork. This could be photos of historical events, literary
characters, mathematical concepts, and more. Encourage your students to find things that they’d like to
share with the class along these same lines. They’ll be excited to have ‘their’ photo picked and shared,
and it will encourage them to think outside the box for each subject.

TEXTING IN THE CLASSROOM

Our students are saturated in a world of technology. As educators there is immediate buy-in when we
connections between our students’ real worlds and our classrooms. One of my favorite (free) resources
to do this is called ifaketext.
It allows users to create faux iPhone text conversations. The website lets you fit between 35 and 50
words on one screen (a conversation between 2 different people). Then, you can take a screen shot of
the conversation or right-click to save the picture as a Jpeg. Here are three different ways I see myself
using this free resource.

(1) Morning Message – I plan on greeting my students at the door every morning and after the first few
weeks they will be well trained in the morning routine. With that said, things always come up (a special
routine, a permission slip, different materials needed during reading, etc.), so why not display a fake text
between you and your class including any reminders. So when everyone is in the door, the class is ready
to go!

(2) Reading Journals – Why not set up a conservation between characters in a story and then, have
students complete the conversation in their reading journals? Then, give students the opportunity to
pair and share with their face or shoulder partner.
(3) Introduce/Review Vocabulary – At the school where I’ll be teaching, ‘flashbacks’ are the required
first step of each class. Using a fake conversation, I can review vocabulary or ask students to use context
clues from the text conversation in order to define the word. Plus, the conversation could be examples of
a specific type of anything (figurative language, prefix, suffix, root word, text feature, etc) and students
have to (a) name/define the term or example being highlighted and (b) continue the conversation!

Well friends, these are just a few of my ideas. What do you think? How could you use faux texting
conversations in your classroom?

The Do’s and Don’ts for Teachers on Social Media Infographic

There are millions of teachers on social media right now. They discuss professional, personal, and
cultural things on a daily basis. But what are the best ways to make the most of your time on social
networks? The Do’s and Don’ts for Teachers on Social Media Infographic presents a few best practices to
keep in mind as you embrace the brave new world of social media for teachers.

Best Uses of Social Media

Do the following:

 Post updates and comments. If you’re in a public forum, keep it light and positive. If you can’t,
keep quiet.

 Connect with colleagues with whom you feel safe. Don’t connect with colleagues you’re unsure
about. Being friends with everyone isn’t part of the job description.

 Control your privacy settings. And keep up with the changes that Facebook makes to those
privacy settings.

 Take care when posting pictures of others. If you tag a colleague, just think how you’d feel if they
did the same to you.

 Disconnect from negativity. Unfriend or block those who continually blast you with negativity
and trolling.

 Show what you’re proud of. Done something great? Let people know.

Worst Uses of Social Media

Avoid the following:

 Don’t follow your students on Facebook. Your intentions are innocent but there’s little to gain
and much to lose.

 Don’t comment on status updates of your students, even if its positive, because you’ll either be
criticising of showing favouritism. You can’t win.

 Think twice before you connect with parents on social media. In a small community it can be
fine, but think twice before you do.

 Don’t drink and tweet or post. Comments made after a bottle has been opened never look so
wise or amusing in the morning.

 Do not post party pictures off social media. if you lost dignity and it was photographed, don’t
revisit the crime scene.

 Please don’t share the beach photos of anything with a state of undress. Those bikini
photographs may look fabulous but will just cause comment.

 Don’t overpost. Don’t offer the world continuous updates on your activities.

 Do not post during work hours. It just doesn’t look good. Not even if it was scheduled.
