Course Description

This course teaches the principles for managing the human resource component of
organizations. Topics include planning, recruitment, and selection; managing
diversity; training and developing staff; managing employee performance;
compensation and benefits; labor relations; employee health and safety; and
managing human resources globally.

Learning Outcomes

1. Develop the technical knowledge to be both an effective employee as well as


effective manager of employees.

2. Describe the various aspects of managing human resources in a contemporary


organization; including HR planning, staffing, performance management, employee
development, compensation, and employee relations.

3. Utilize knowledge of relevant employment law to develop strategically


appropriate workplace policies and procedures.

4. Incorporate knowledge of progressive human resources practices into every day


decision-making in the workplace.
Course Schedule

The daily schedule of lectures and activities is posted to Moodle as a separate


document.

Examinations

There will be four exams. Exams will be multiple-choice and will cover material
from the book and lectures. If you miss an exam due to an excused absence, you
must have your excuse report validated by the Division of Undergraduate Academic
Programs (located in the Park Shops) for it to be considered as university approved.

If you miss an exam without an approved excuse, contact me immediately to arrange


a make-up exam. Your score will be reduced by 10%.

Attendance

Just like in the workplace, you will be expected to come to class every, however
attendance will not be taken.

Use of Electronic Devices

Use of cell phones during class will not be permitted. You may use a laptop to
follow the slides or to take notes. Any unauthorized use of electronic devices,
including laptops during class will not be acceptable and may result in a reduction in
your final grade.

Professionalism

Class will start promptly at 11:45 and you are expected to be in your seat and ready
to start. This is a very large class and it is imperative that every student behaves
professionally during the class. Examples of unprofessional behavior include:

 Consistently coming to class late, leaving early, or leaving the classroom for
extended periods of time;
 Using unauthorized electronic devices during class;
 Talking to fellow students outside of the context of the class discussion;
 Sleeping;
 Doing coursework unrelated to this class;
 Being rude or argumentative

Academic Integrity

Each student will be held to the standards of the Code of Student Conduct and the
Honor Code. Plagiarism, cheating, and other misconduct will be pursued as
appropriate. Downloading or use of material from an on-line site without proper
citation is considered plagiarism. Academic dishonesty may result in an automatic
failing grade for the course.
