13 – GENERAL PHYSICS 4 Fourth Long Quiz

DIRECTION: Solve the following problems clearly. Show your complete solution for partial points. Enclose your final

answer in a box. Softcopies, scanned images or clear photographs of your answers and solutions (either handwritten or
typewritten) will be allowed for submission. Kindly submit your answers with solutions on or before Monday, March 21,
2016 5 PM either through Blackboard or my personal email: cfbaldo@gmail.com. A notification reply will be sent as
proof of receipt. No late submission will be accepted

1. Interference fringes. Consider the interference pattern formed by light of wavelength 100 nm and intensity I0 incident
on four slits of width 50 nm and slit separation 10 nm.

a. What is the maximum intensity of the pattern in terms of the incident intensity I0?
b. How many minima or dark fringes are in between the principal bright fringes?
c. How many secondary bright fringes are in between the principal bright fringes?
d. If the number of slits is reduced from four to two, what is the maximum intensity of the pattern in terms of the
incident intensity I0?
e. Calculate the number of interference bright fringes inside the central diffraction maximum (bright fringe)
after the number of slits has been reduced to two.
f. If the entire setup is immersed in a medium with a refractive index of 2, what happens to the spacing in
between the interference bright fringes? Choices: increases, decreases or remains the same

2. Pattern. Consider a Young’s double-slit experiment that uses light of wavelength λ = 500π nm and is made incident on
the two slits that are 0.025 cm apart. The slits are 1.00 m from the screen. Note: Be careful on the handling the units.

a. Calculate the phase difference for an interference bright fringe that is at angular position 10 from the optic
axis.
b. Calculate the distance of the first, second and third-order bright fringes from the optic axis.
c. Determine the width of the central interference maximum.
d. What is the maximum intensity of the pattern if the intensity through each slit is 10 mW/m2?
e. Calculate the distance of the first, the second and the third-order bright fringes from the optic axis, if in
case one slit is covered with a thin film that causes half-cycle out of phase.
f. Determine the width of the central interference maximum if the setup is immersed in medium with a refractive
index of 2.

3. Relative velocity. An enemy spaceship is moving toward your starfighter with a speed, as measured in your frame, of
0.400c. The enemy ship fires a missile toward you at a speed of 0.700c relative to the enemy ship.

a. What is the speed of the missile relative to you?
b. If you measure that the enemy ship is 8.00 x 106 km away from you when the missile is fired, how much time,
measured in your frame, will it take the missile to reach you?
