STRATIGRAPHIC EVOLUTION

The Mesozoic stratigraphic evolution of the Northem Camarvon Basin is reviewed in some
detail here to establish the regional setting for this study, as well as introduce the other
elements of the petroleum systems of the Northern Carnarvon Basin.

During the Early Triassic, the Locker Shale was deposite in a regional marine transgression in
shallow shelf environments. The Locker Shale is overlain by a thick succession of the fluvio-
deltaic Mungaroo Formation, which was deposited in a broad, low relief, rapidly subsiding
coastal plain including an extensive swamp system.

During the Late Triassic and Early Jurassic, it’s formed in response to continental breakup.

During the early Berriasian, provided the primary source of sediments for the Barrow Group,
which was a north-northeast trending major progradational delta across the Exmouth Sub-
basin and the southem and central Exmouth Plateau.

The origin of the barroe group is considered to be caused by the tectonic

chrono and lithostratigraphy.

It’s consists of variable facies of deposition such as turbidites, basin-floor fans
and fluviodeltaic strata of the lower delta. North of the delta front, a major
deepwater fan was deposited that forms the reservoir at the Scarborough gas
These strata of the Barrow Group are overlain by the transgressive
carbonates en un ambiente deposited in a low energy environment, these strata were
dominated by extensive deposition of marine carbonates (Toolonga Calcilutite)

The study area is composed of the following units, from the Triassic to the recent.

In the Triassic we have the formation of Mungaroo, later we have Jurassic units of little
thickness.

In the early Cretaceous we have barrow group, muderon formation gearle formation

And in the late cretaceous is the toolonga and miria formation.

Then, in the tertiary, the deposition of carbonates and the delambre formation.

In which several sequences were recognized that are limited by discordances in which it is seen
in the image. This image shows a regional section of the area of interest, showing the chrono
and lithostratigraphy.

In the triasico we have the mungaroo formation that has a general lithology of siltstone and
sandstone and in the area of the jupiter well in the top of mungaroo a thin layer of carbonates
that were deposited in a marine and fluvial environment.

We can see that the mungaroo formation by the lithology of siltstone can be a source rock and
by the lithology of sandstone it could be a reservoir rock, since fault structures that are found
in the formation by the prerift can act as a seal trapping the gas field or oil; or other lithologies
that are impervious can also act as a seal in the same formation or in the case of jupiter, in its
area the jurassic could be a seal rock or generators for its lithology in which if or if the
muderong there acts like a rock seal.

On top of the mungaroo formation in the early cretaceous, we see the Barrow Group.

It's consist of variable facies of deposition such as turbidites, basin-floor fans and fluvio deltaic
strata of the lower delta. North of the delta front, a major deepwater fan deposited that forms
the reservoir at the Scarborough gas field (usually of sandstone deposited in a Nearshore and
shelfal marine environment in which it makes a good reservoir of loyal gas and oil, where the
formation muderong acts as rock seal.
These strata of the Barrow Group are overlain by the transgressive

Marine Muderong Shale, windalia and gearle formation. that are formed by marl, calcilutite
and claystone in which could be generating rocks in which either the faithful oil or oil have
been migrated by the normal faults of the tectonic phase inversion, and being sealed already
by the toolonga, miria and These are composed of marl and carbonates in an environment
deposited in a low energy environment, these strata were dominated by extensive deposition
of marine carbonates (Toolonga Calcilutite) in an open marine shelfal environment., in which
they are good seal rocks,

That already depends if the pressure and temperature were adequate for the formation of
faithful gas and oil in gearle muderon and gearle formations.
