Q1. (a) A WT230 × 26 standard steel shape is used to support the loads shown on the beam in
Figure 1 (a). The dimensions from the top and bottom of the shape to the centroidal axis are
shown on the sketch of the cross section (Figure Q1(a)). Consider the entire 4-m length of the
beam.
Determine the maximum compression bending stress at any location along the beam.

Figure Q1(a)

Note: Your answer must contain free body diagrams, calculations, shear diagram and moment
diagram.

(b) The beam is constructed from three boards as shown in Figure Q2. The allowable shear
𝑘𝑁
stress for the wood is 𝜏𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑜𝑤 = 275 . Answer the following;
𝑚2

i. Determine the maximum load P that the wooden beam can support.
ii. What is the maximum allowable spacing ‘s’ of the nails used to hold the (i) top
and (ii) bottom flanges to the web if each nail can resist a shear force of 200 N?

Q2 (a) The assembly in Figure Q2 consists of two solid 50-mm-diameter steel [E =200 GPa] rods
(1) and (2). Assume that the rods are pin-connected and that joint B is restrained against translation
in the z direction. A minimum factor of safety of 3.0 is required for the buckling capacity of each
rod. Determine the maximum allowable load P that can be supported by the assembly.

(b) For each term below, (i) explain by definition and (ii) sketch diagrams/figures/graphs (which
ever relevant) to illustrate/differentiate components in each term.

ii. Slenderness-ratio
iii. Eccentric Loading
