Reflection for April 4th

First Class:
Today was my first-time teaching humanities, and it was a challenge at first but by the end I
really enjoyed it. I taught the students about the French Canadians, and the impact they have
on Alberta’s history, and culture. With the first class, I found I went too fast when it came to
going through the PowerPoint, and explaining all of the terms that many of the students were
confused after. Because of this I had to go over the PowerPoint again, and make sure that they
understood the terms and the people that were important to know. I went through a couple
brain breaks with the class and saw how much they help the students focus and have fun in
class. I had done them in kindergarten but hadn’t tried them out in grade four, and now I see
that I want to use them more often throughout my lessons.
After the students completed their word webs, I brought them back together to go over some
aspects of the French-Canadian culture. We watched some videos that were about their
festivals, and then one about Cirque Du Solei. The students were very engaged during the
videos and participated in the discussion about French Culture and why it was important.
What could of gone better:
When I reflected with Mrs. Moldovan, she told me I could of drawn out a word web with them
and given them an example of how to do it. By doing it together the students are able to pick
up on how to create one and what to include. She also told me to go slower through the
PowerPoint as I had rushed through it before.

Second Class:
The second class seemed better, as I reflected on what Mrs. M had told me and put that
towards my next lesson. The students were able to grasp the concept of the word web and
included a lot more. I let the class read longer at first before I started my lesson, and then
started teaching. I went over the slides in more detail, and asked a lot of questions so that the
students were able to learn as they also gave their input. We still had to go over the
information again, but that was good as it gave the students more of a solid idea of who the
French Canadians were and why they were important. The students in this class were also very
engaged with the French culture and the videos.
What could of gone better:
I felt for both classes that I could have provided more detail for some of the concepts and given
more examples as well. Overall, I had fun with the lesson and enjoyed teaching social.
