THE KANATA NORTH COMMUNITY RECOGNITION AWARDS – Save the

Date, April 24, 7pm, Mlacak Centre - Nominations have closed for the
awards. Thank you to all who sent in nominations. All nominees will be
honoured. The judges now have the difficult task to choose an overall winner
in each category. Join me, along with emcee Steve Madley, to celebrate the
achievements of some great volunteers.

BILL TERON CELEBRATION OF LIFE – A number of you have asked if

there will be an opportunity for the public to recognize and celebrate the
contributions made by Bill Teron, the founder of Kanata. A team has been
put together to plan a celebration of Bill’s life and accomplishments, to be
held the evening of April 30th at the Brookstreet Hotel. Details are being
worked out, so please check my website, future column or next newsletter
for information about this event, which will be open to the public.

SPRING CLEANING THE CAPITAL - Although it does not feel like spring,
we know it is coming. With the thaw, we are seeing more debris in our
parks and walkways. Why not get a group together and register for
Cleaning the Capital? It would be great if Kanata North could win both the
fall and the spring challenge this year for the greatest participation. See
more information at www.ottawa.ca. Get your registration in before April 14
to be eligible for the early bird prizes.

CELEBRATING SENIORS AWARD – The Council on Aging of Ottawa

honoured a number of seniors with a Celebrating Senior Award at their first
Award Luncheon last week. I was pleased to be one of the recipients. I am
happy to be able to still be active and serve the community. It was great to
see so many seniors who contribute so much to making Ottawa a great place
to live. I encourage everyone to look around them and find a need or
activity that contributes to the community and enhances our own lives.

NUIANCE MOSQUITO PROGRAM – This week I met with City staff and the
contractor GDG Environmental to review last year’s program and to identify
areas of concern for this year. Since we have had a milder than usual
winter, mosquitoes have already been seen. These ones overwinter, as
adults, in tree-holes and under the bark of trees and are the first mosquitoes
we see flying in the spring. Fortunately, they are not aggressive human
biters, unlike those that will soon develop in snowmelt ponds and wetlands.
You will soon see GDG employees and their helicopter dealing with larvae in
wetlands to ensure they don’t hatch into adult mosquitoes. We expect fewer
mosquitoes to survive this year as it looks like it will be a much drier spring.
I will report on this year’s program at my next Town Hall meeting on April
23rd.
TOWN HALL, April 23, Beaverbrook Library – Save the date and plan to
come to find out what will happen in 2018. See details on my website in mid April.
