Warm-up 1
Snowball Tag/Ball Handling
Instructions  One student beings with beanbag in the middle and must tag other
students as they try to run across area
 Once a student is tagged, they ]collect a beanbag and can tag others
 Play until all students have a beanbag.
 Play 3 – 4 times

On completion all students have a beanbag and must attempt the following:

 High throw and snatch beanbag out of air (overhand catch/quick grasp)
while standing
 Throw with dominant hand, snatch with non-dominant. Swap
 Throw beanbag high above and catch (claps while beanbag airborne
encourage higher throw)
 High throw above, spin 360 and catch
 Throw behind back/over shoulder to catch in front
 Throw under one leg & catch with opposite hand. Repeat with other sides

Be cognisant of age/ability level of students and equipment used

Variation  Students pair up. Perform same tasks with tennis ball to partner
/Progression

L.E.S.T  Learners: Students are inside the grid at all times to ensure they are
easy to watch for the teacher.
 Equipment:
• 1 x Beanbag/Ball per student
• 4 x Markers
 Space: Square 15m x 10m (Dependent on class size. Large enough
for class)
 Time: 2 – 5 Minutes (Until students lose interest)

Warm-up 2

Partner Ball Toss – Stage 1


Instructions  Students passing a ball back and forth using an underarm throw 3m
apart
 Teaching Cue: Step, swing, release
 Students must make 10 consecutive catches together before
progressing to 5m, then 10m
 Once students moved to 10m, they are to use overarm throw
 10 catches still required. Now move to 15m and 20m

Variation  Students use non-dominant hand

 Equipment
• 1 x marker per student
• 1 x ball between two students.
 Space: Maximum 20m wide
 Time: 5 -10 min dependent on skill level of students

Fielding 1

Target Throwing – Stage 2


Instructions  Students paired up. 15m apart facing partner
 1 cone halfway between
 Aim is to hit it as many times as possible
 Each student has 6 throws (1 over)
 Partner fields the ball and rolls back to the thrower
 Introduces them to fielding the ball properly and having to throw at a target
after gathering

Variation  Increase distance between partners


 Left/Right hand only
/Progression  Add a scoring system – 6 runs if you hit the top of the cone and 4 if you hit
the base (kanga cricket cones work well).
 Progress to rolling the ball so fielding is more game-like (vary between fast
and slow balls

Stump Throwing

 Students to now throw at a set of stumps facing side on (dependent on


skill/age level). Each time stumps or base hit, 1 stump removed. Continue
throwing until first pair has no stumps remaining

L.E.S.T  Learners: Students are facing each other in partners to track and
retrieve balls easily
 Equipment:
o 1 x ball per pair
o 2 x cones per pair
o 1 x wickets per pair
 Space: Students are on long sides of a rectangle. Teacher able to
roam and observe easily.
 Time: 5 -10 min

Fielding 2

Run Out – Stage 3


Instructions  Feeder rolls the ball towards the fielder who fields it and throws it at the
wickets.
 Wicket-keeper aims to catch it behind the stumps and ‘stump’ the batsman

Variation/  Fielder to throw immediately after gathering ball to simulate real run out
Progression  Feeder bounces the ball at the fielder rather than rolling it
 Add a running batsman in next to the fielder in order to put the fielder under
more pressure to make a run out
 Wicket-keeper can wear gloves (simulate game situation)
L.E.S.T  Learners: Students are in groups of four. Students rotate through
each position
 Equipment: per group of 4
o 2 x balls
o 1 x wickets
o 1 x WK gloves
o 2 x markers
 Space: pitches set up all in a row. 2-3m space in between to avoid
interference.
 Time: 10 minutes (enough to ensure everyone rotates through each
position)

Bowling 1

Introduction to Bowling – Stage 2-3


Instructions  Students working in pairs.
 One WK, one bowler
 Bowler bowls at the wickets from 15-20m away (skill dependent).
 The WK fields the ball and returns it to bowler
 Bowler bowls an over before swapping

KTP’s/ Teaching Cues:

• Step, Reach, Roll, Release


• Clock Hands
Variation/  Students given target (hoop, rubber runners, etc.) to aim at
 Teacher to question students target placement (tactics, left/right hand batter
Progression etc.)
 WK to adjust position according to how partner is bowling
 Create a points system
• 1 point: Outside off stump
• 2 points: In line with the stumps
• 4 points: Hit stumps
• -1 point: Wide/No-Ball/Leg side

L.E.S.T  Learners: Students in Pairs


 Equipment: each pair needs
o 1x Ball
o 1x Wickets
o 1x Marker
 Space: Pitches set up in a line.
 Time: 10min (adequate time for 3 overs each)
