April 9, 2018
Reading: In this very short unit, students will build their
background knowledge about the science behind natural
disasters. They will read two informational articles, one
about hurricanes and the other about earthquakes. Students
will focus on the relationships between scientific concepts
in these informational texts, specifically how hurricanes and
earthquakes form and what happens when they occur.
Please know spelling and definitions
of the words below:
Vocabulary Words
• Parallelogram: four-sided closed figure with opposite
sides that are parallel and equal 

• Quadrilateral: closed figure with four sides 


Math: Module 5 extends students’ understanding of two-
dimensional figures. Students combine prior knowledge of
area with newly acquired knowledge of fraction
multiplication to determine the area of rectangular figures
with fractional side lengths. Please continue to encourage
your child to persevere when they come upon a problem
that is difficult at first. As always, we are continuing to
work on writing about math and thoroughly explaining our
steps when solving.
• Rectangle: parallelogram with four 90° angles
• Rhombus: parallelogram with four equal sides
• Trapezoid: quadrilateral with at least one pair of parallel
sides 

• Kite: quadrilateral with two pairs of two equal sides that
are also adjacent; a kite can be a rhombus if 
 all
sides are equal
