PRE-LESSON INDIVIDUAL ACTIVITY (5 mins)
With the book closed, teacher write the word book, author and title on the whiteboard with
the letters jumbled up, e.g. kobo, hotaur and ettli. Pupils are told that these three words are
all connected with the topic of literature. Pupils are asked to work in pairs and write the
letters in the correct order to spell the words.

LESSON DEVELOPMENT
ACTIVITY 1
Gist INDIVIDUAL ACTIVITY (20 mins)
1. Teacher instruct the pupils to open their Pulse 2 Textbook page 20.
2. Pupils are asked to read the literary genres listed in Exercise 1 silently.
3. Pupils then listened to an audio track of Exercise 1 and they need to repeat the
words with the correct pronunciation and intonation.
4. Teacher then asked the pupils what is the difference between an autobiography
and a biography. Teacher waited for the students to response for the answer.
Teacher then discusses the answer with the students. (autobiography – a book
ACTIVITIES someone writes about their own life, biography – a book about a person’s life
written by another person).
5. Pupils are tested their understanding of each kind and meaning of each literary
genre, e.g. thriller, travel guide, etc.

Detailed Task INDIVIDUAL ACTIVITY (20 mins)


1. Teacher checks pupils’ understanding of the task.
2. Pupils work individually and they are asked to complete the comments in Exercise
2 using words from Exercise 1 in their exercise book.
3. Pupils are prompted by the teacher which two books are about real people.
4. Pupils compare answers in pairs.
5. Teacher then play the audio track for the pupils to listen and check their answers.
6. Pupils check the answers by comparing with their friends.

ACTIVITY 2 INDIVIDUAL ACTIVITY (15 mins)


1. Pupils are asked to read the definitions in Exercise 3.
2. Pupils work individually and find the words in Exercise 1 that match the
definitions.

3. Pupils are selected randomly by the teachers to mix and match the word and the
definition that are written on flash cards.
4. Check answers as a class.

POST-LESSON INDIVIDUAL ACTIVITY (5 mins)


Teacher asks students to copy these information in their Exercise book and that they need
to do it as their homework. Pupils need to submit the exercise book in 2 days’ time.

LITERARY GENRE DEFINITIONS


Adventure Story  fiction that usually presents danger, or gives the reader a sense of
excitement such as world travel, difficult quests, voyages of discovery, and
other journeys.
 They might involve things like pirates and buried treasure, the search for a
secret place or object, or a quest or expedition whose success is crucial for
personal or societal reasons.
Autobiography  a self-written life story.
Biography  the life story of a person written by someone else
Comic Novel  A novel intended to elicit laughter or amusement, typically having a happy
or conciliatory ending.
Cookery Book  a book containing recipes and other information about the preparation
and cooking of food.
Detective Novel  a subgenre of crime fiction and mystery fiction in which an investigator or a
detective—either professional, amateur or retired—investigates a crime,
often murder.
Fairy Tale  A fairy tale is a story, often intended for children, that features fanciful and
wondrous characters such as elves, goblins, wizards, and even, but not
necessarily, fairies.
 The term “fairy” tale seems to refer more to the fantastic and
magical setting or magical influences within a story, rather than the
presence of the character of a fairy within that story.
Historical Novel  a novel having as its setting a period of history and usually introducing
some historical personages and events.
Poetry Book  literary work in which the expression of feelings and ideas is given
intensity by the use of distinctive style and rhythm; poems
Romantic Novel  fiction place their primary focus on the relationship and romantic love
between two people, and must have an "emotionally satisfying and
optimistic ending."
Science Fiction / Sci-Fi  fiction based on imagined future scientific or technological advances and
major social or environmental changes, frequently portraying space or
time travel and life on other planets.
Thriller  a broad genre of literature, film and television, having numerous, often
overlapping subgenres. Thrillers are characterized and defined by the
moods they elicit, giving viewers heightened feelings of suspense,
excitement, surprise, anticipation and anxiety.
 a genre of literature, film, and television whose primary feature is that it
induces strong feelings of excitement, anxiety, tension, suspense, fear, and
other similar emotions in its readers or viewers.
Travel Guide  book of information about a place designed for the use of visitors or
tourists".
 It will usually include information about sights, accommodation,
restaurants, transportation, and activities.
 Maps of varying detail and historical and cultural information are often
included.
