Concept Know number names and count the sequence

Objective After playing a game in which students use a number line to cre-
ate and solve addition problems they will be able to complete a
worksheet that asks them to list the numbers that come next af-
ter a specific number.

Standards K.CC.2 Count forward beginning from a given number within the
known sequence (instead of having to begin at 1).

EL Levels 2 ELs (not yet tested)

Procedures Open:
* Call students to the rug.
* Tell students that we will start math by playing a game.
* Have stents count by 2’s and write the sequence on the board.
(2, 4, 6, 8, 10 on one line, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20 on the next and so
on).
* Stop at 24 and draw lines where 28-40 would go.
* Ask students to help you fill in the missing numbers.
* Call on students to help and ask them how they found their an-
swers.
* Ask students if they see a pattern in the numbers.
* Circle and discuss the different patterns.
- “Tell me more about that.”

Body:
* Tell students that they will be playing the number line addition
game with their buddies.
* Remind them that to play this game they roll a number on a
dice and place their counter on that number. Then, they roll an-
other number and move forward on the number line that many
squares. Their partner then writes the number sentence they
created on a white board. The partners take turns rolling and
writing.
* Send students to collect their materials and play the game.
* Walk around and assist while students play.

Close:
* Have students clean up their game and meet back on the rug.
* Introduce student to the What Come Next practice page.
* Model doing the What Comes Next practice page with two of
the problems for students.
- The start of the number sequence is written on the first line,
ask students to say number.
- have students help count the next three numbers (+1) that
come after the first number.
* Ask students how this activity relates to a number line.
- Call on students to share.
* Hand out the practice page.
* Students take practice page to their desks to work on.
* Assist students as they work.

Modifications/
Adaptions * CGI activity allows students of every level to participate.
* Students work with math partners who have been picked out
for them.
* Students will be able to use their number lines while they do
their What Comes Next practice.
* Walk around to assist who need extra help.

CoTeaching One-Teach/One-Assist

Assessment * Observe students while they do the CGI and number line
game.
* Assess students work on the What Comes Next practice page.
