Exercise on Questionnaires (DHS)

Instructions:

Use a copy of your country final report, go to the Appendix with questionnaires at the back of the
report. Prepare to work together with your neighbor. Note: some answers will differ by country.

Answer the following questions:

1. In which questionnaire can you find weight and height measurements? For whom are these
measurements taken?
A: See survey – often HH questionnaire, children 0-5, women 15-49, and men 15-59
Emphasize the differences between DHS 7 surveys and earlier surveys
2. Which questionnaire(s) collect(s) information on education?
A: HH questionnaire, man’s Questionnaire, Woman’s questionnaire
3. Find the question on current contraceptive use in the woman’s questionnaire. What is the
question number? Which women are asked questions on current contraceptive use?
A: Often Q303 or thereabouts; women who are not currently pregnant are asked this question.
In some countries (Egypt, Pakistan), only currently married women who are not currently
pregnant are asked
4. Find the question on current contraceptive use in the man’s questionnaire. Which men are
asked this question? What is the difference between the questions for women and for men
A: Often Q438 or thereabouts, men who ever had sex are asked this question. The wording of
the question is different and condom use is asked separately for men in surveys before DHS7.
But it has changed in DHS 7.
5. Which women are asked about antenatal care and place of delivery? For how many births is this
information collected?
A: Women who had a birth in the past 5 years are asked about ANC and delivery. ANC is asked
only for the most recent birth in the past 5 years; delivery care is asked for all the births in the
past 5 years.
