Smart Technology Lesson Plan

Grade Level: 10th grade

Subject Area: English and Social Studies
Objective(s):
1. Given an article having a geographic context, to gain background knowledge of
that geography prior to evaluating the author's claims or argument.
2. Students will analyze an author’s reasoning and evidence in an article, in order to
evaluate the overall effectiveness, using geographic apps.
Standards:
Nation Geography Standard 15:
How physical systems affect human systems. The student knows and
understands: Adaptation to the environment
3. Societies use a variety of strategies to adapt to changes in the
physical environment Therefore, the student is able to: Explain how
societies adapt to reduced capacity in the physical environment
English Speaking and Listening:
3. Evaluate a speaker’s point of view, reasoning, and use of evidence and
rhetoric, identifying any fallacious reasoning or exaggerated or distorted
evidence.
ISTE Standards:
3.Knowledge Constructor: Students critically curate a variety of resources
using digital tools to construct knowledge, produce creative artifacts and
make meaningful learning experiences for themselves and others
3b. Students evaluate the accuracy, perspective, credibility and
relevance of information, media, data or other resources.

Introduction and Demonstration of the Technology:

1. Divide students into groups of 3 students and distribute an iPad to each group.
2. Show the students the apps they will be using for the activity and demonstrate
how to navigate its features.
3. Give students 5 minutes to practice using the app. At this time each group
member should pick the app they will be using to investigate in the activity.
Technology Activity:
1. Students will watch the video Life Takes Flight [3:18 minutes] as a class and read
the article, “How Tiny Planes Could Revolutionize Health Care” found at
https://news.nationalgeographic.com/2017/07/chasing-genius-zipline-
drones/?_ga=2.46292647.1833935649.1522770428-1552450580.1522770428
a. The teacher will show the video on the overhead, and print the article.
b. Students will then read the article silently and watch the video before
moving onto the next part.
2. Using the iPad app
a. In this next section, the groups will each investigate and analyze the
effectiveness of the article using the following three apps. Each student
will pick one app to use.
i. Google Maps
ii. Google Earth
iii. National Geographic World Atlas
b. As a group the students will answer the following questions in a short
response. Please type your responses on a google doc, using the google
doc app on the iPad. Be sure to include all group members names and the
app they were in charge of investigating. To submit, share the google doc
with your teacher via email.
i. What reasoning does the author use to support their claim?
ii. How does the author use evidence/ facts?
iii. Using the apps above: identify any fallacious reasoning or
exaggerated or distorted evidence. Are the facts accurate based on
the geographic profile? Be sure that each group member addresses
evidence in their app.
iv. Is the article effective in proving the point that small planes are
revolutionizing healthcare?
v. Pick two locations in Rwanda. Compare them using evidence you
gather from your app (e.g. driving versus flying distances to
hospital, road access, weather, or other information) and then
explain how the technology being used in the article is an
adaptation to the physical environment.
vi. Are there any downsides to this particular technology being used as
a solution?

3. Assessment
Students will be individually assessed based on their summary according to the
following rubric:
