From the political perspective, “ The Crucible “ by Arthur Miller uses political aspects

that were used throughout history. Communism was brought up in both the novel and in political

history. Focusing more on the book when thinking about the state and religious body politic

seeks on keeping the community together and prevents any kind of disagreements. The more

danger of rejection and restriction the determined officials become to stamp out witchcraft

which leads of more enemies.

According to msu.edu it states, “There were a number of political conflicts at the

time that the Salem witch trials took place. However, the conflict described below is the
one that had the greatest impact on the path leading to the cases, their outcomes and
their consequences.”In the text it states (Miller 5) “The Englishmen who landed there were
motivated mainly by an hunt for profit. They had thought to pick off the wealth of the new
country and then return rich to England. They were a band of individualists, and a much more
ingratiating group than the Massachusetts men. But Virginia destroyed them. Massachusetts
tried to kill off the Puritans, but they combined; they set up an communal society which, in the
beginning, was little more than an armed camp with an autocratic and very devoted leadership”.
During this time Salem was beset by internal conflicts that became crucial to the later witch
trials.

To further on according to http://www.salemwitchtrials.com it states, “ The main

reason was its 600 plus residents were divided into two main parts: those who wanted to
separate from Salem Town, and those who did not. The residents who wanted to separate
from Salem Town were farming families located in the western part of Salem Village.
Those who wanted to remain a part of Salem Town were typically located on the eastern
side of Salem Village--closest to Salem Town. The residents who wished to remain a part
of Salem Town were economically tied to its thriving, rich harbors.” In the text it states
(Miller 6) “Simply, it was this: for good purposes, even high purposes, the people of Salem
developed an theocracy, an combine of state and religious power whose function was to keep
the community together, and to prevent any kind of disunity that might open it to destruction by
material or ideological enemies.” Now the Salem Town was located to the Atlantic coast and
had became a busy urban center with rich citizens. Verses the Salem villagers who were mostly
farmers and servants who were use to more traditional religious and social values than the town
residents.

In the text it states (Miller 32) “ Political opposition, thereby, is given an inhumane
overlay which then justifies the abrogation of all normally applied customs of civilized
intercourse. A political policy is equated with moral right, and opposition to it with diabolical
malevolence. Once such an equation is effectively made, society becomes a congerie of plots
and counterplots, and the main role of government changes from that of the arbiter to that of the
scourge of God.” Viewing from this perspective knowing that the Salem Town had political and
religious authority over the Salem Village. Just like today Government and Religion plays hand
in hand with each-other just like back in Salem Witch Trials anyone who disagrees with the
court’s activities cannot be a honest opponent. Believing that the court is God’s work and if your
an enemy of the court you must be a devil.

The man with the plan was the famous “ Thomas Putnam “ in the text it states (Miller 13)
“ Thomas Putnam was the eldest son of the richest man in the village. He had fought the
Indians at Narragansett, and was deeply interested in parish affairs. He undoubtedly felt it poor
payment that the village should so blatantly disregard his candidate for one of its more important
offices, especially since he regarded himself as the intellectual superior of most of the people
around him”. The Putnams themselves were the leaders of the separatist group primarily
because they owned the most farmland in Salem Village. Putman was a major influence in the
Salem Witch Trials.

To conclude seeing from the political perspective politics/government plays an important

role in this book. It shows how their will be challenges that will arrived and someone will need to
find a way to control the situations. Also how the Government choose to get involved with Salem
Witch Trials with separation and e.t.c.
