Horticultural Participants who were depressed that took

part in a gardening program saw less signs of
depression just after 3 months.

Exercise When exercising in nature, it is found that a

more positive connotation and emotion was
found along with it and that participants who
were in nature exercised at a faster pace. For
example, running.

Emotional Stability People were observed to be happier when

not only being in nature but also just looking
at pictures of scenery. It triggers the cingulate
gyrus part of the brain which is linked to
balance and happiness.

Negative Ions Near water sources, specifically those which

are fast moving, have been found to contain
negative ions which upon breathing can act
as a natural antidepressant.

Cancer Fighting Cells It is shown that just walking in the forest for
hours at a time can increase in women
cancer fighting white blood cells.

Biophilia This basically means the love for all things

that are alive and more recently to have a
genetic basis that connects with nature.

Innate Connection Humans have been around a long time,

before humans had technology they had to
bond with nature in order to survive and that
is why we like to be around nature and are
afraid of certain things in nature.

Extinction Are recent disconnection with nature could

lead to us destroying it and making many
species go extinct.

Inspiration Many wonder through nature and interact with

it one on one and can bring them to a state of
peace and make connections with it. Humans
get a satisfaction from interaction with nature.

Skills Like said earlier, humans tend to wonder and

do activities in nature which builds a set of
skills that cannot be gained anywhere else.

Playgrounds Children who play on natural playgrounds and

not concrete are more likely to get along
better and invent their own games.

Attention Deficit Disorder In children as young as five years old,

symptoms of ADD can be decreased with just
a little bit of exposure to nature. Richard
suggests that maybe ADD is increasing
because of the lack of nature in children’s
development today.

Parental Anxiety It seems that parents are scared to let their

children out of the house because they are
afraid that they will be abducted. Studies
show that child abductions are very far down
from the 1970’s. It is not that children don’t
have access to nature as most suburbs have
wooded areas near them but that parents will
simply not allow them out of the house.

Cynicism Richard had brought some gang members

out into nature to see how they would react,
at first, they felt uncomfortable and even
scared. Richard says that they would soon
remind him of eight-year old’s jumping over
creeks and the cynicism left their eyes.

Radical Change Richard states that for thousands of years,

children and humans have been outside their
whole lives and that over the past few
decades of us not being in it for barely any
time at all has got to have some negative
affect on mental, physical and spiritual health.

Separation This modern era of humans being separated

from nature has caused more cases of
myopia in humans, rising levels of obesity
and diabetes, and a rise in depression

Therapy Many senses get triggered whenever you are

in nature that lead to the rejuvenation feeling.
Even just looking at it can result in positive
effects. Patients that were sat next to
windows that overlooked nature recovered
from surgery a full day faster and used less
pain medications.

Incarcerated Prisoners in certain prison systems were put

to help grow endangered species and plant
species to save some of the dying life on their
planet. The prison’s reported that the amount
of violence in the prisons had gone down and
that the inmates were having more social
interaction between each other.

Solitary Confinement The incarcerated at a certain prison were

allowed to watch films on nature for one hour
a day and the prisons have said that the
stress levels in these inmates have gone
down.

Society They compare how everyday life for non-

prisoners are starting to become like solitary
confinement because of the lack of nature in
our lives. More and more jobs are working
inside of offices with very little windows and
we are starting to become attached to
cellphones and dependent on technology.

Deprivation Playing in parks provides youth with a set of

social skills as well as solve problems and is
beneficial to child development. Recently,
children have been playing less outside and
stuck to their technology which is making
them weaker in their mind, body and senses.

Consequences Health problems increase from lack of play

outdoors, increase in obesity, heart disease,
rickets and emotional and social disorders.

Recess Recess times in most schools have been cut

down or completely out and it has been
shown that recess develops social skills and
has a positive effect on grades and
excellence in the classroom.

Connection There seems to be a connection between free

play and social skills and emotional disorders
such as anxiety and depression. Also children
with ADHD that were exposed to nature had
more manageable ADHD symptoms.

Cognitive Outdoor play in children leads to adults that

are more courageous, creative and have
better critical thinking in adulthood.
