PRECIPITATION
The mean precipitation over the year is 132.96mm, the range is 113.8mm. Based on the
graph I can inform that during the summer the precipitation is actually more than the amount of
precipitation during the winter. The time that the precipitation increases the most is during June
because it is at 204.7. During the winter the amount of precipitation had started to decrease. For
example; the graph also shows that the greatest amount of precipitation during the winter was in
February because the amount of precipitation is 138.7. This specific area is prone to to frequent
thunderstorms but they mainly occur during the summer. The entire state is also vulnerable to a
tornado, which mainly occur from January to March. This information helps me state that the
precipitation is received a lot more during the months of summer. The precipitation during the winter
mainly accompanies cold fronts which mostly pass over the city. The main reason for why it mainly
rains during the summer is because the upper level winds push the storm systems across the US .
The upper level winds are faster during the winter and they allow cold fronts to quickly move across
the country. In the summer the upper level winds are actually much slower, so it causes a storm to
either stay in that specific area for a certain amount of time and not move at all or move very slowly.
So, this is the main reason why it mainly rains during the summer in New Orleans.
TEMPERATURE
In New Orleans the type of weather is mainly hot, and also humid, so this type of
weather affects the type of temperature. The mean temperature over the entire year is actually
21°C and the range temperature is 16°C. In New Orleans cold weather doesn’t actually
frequently occur. The city of New Orleans averages for about six nights a year which is when
the temperature drops and it is freezing cold. The temperature is usually cold during
December, January, and also February. The mean temperature for December is 13°C, for
January it is 12°C, for February the mean temperature is actually 14°C. The temperature is
hotter during the months of June, July, and also August. For example the graph shows me that
the mean temperature for June is actually 28, along with July and also August. Based on the
graph these months are the hottest and they have the most amount of precipitation. So, this
proves that during the summer the temperature gets very hot and sometimes during the winter
there is a small percent of a chance that the temperature will drop and be cooler for a couple
of days. In New Orleans the weather is mainly hot and humid which I believe affects the
temperature.
ELEVATION
The elevation of location of New Orleans is 2 meters I think that this affects the
temperature because since it has lower elevation that means that the temperature is warmer because
it’s closer to the surface. If the elevation is higher the temperature will be colder because lower
pressure at high altitudes causes the temperature to be colder than at a mountain compared to sea
level. This is caused because as air rises the pressure decreases. So, it is that lower pressure at
higher altitudes causes it to be colder at higher elevation. Since, the city of New Orleans isn’t at a
very high elevation the temperature isn’t cold, which explains why the weather in that area is hot, and
humid.
New Orleans is very nearby the Lake Pontchartrain and I believe that this affects
temperature because although low elevation causes higher temperature I think that it is affected by
the lake because when the wind currents move towards that direction they will go more towards the
city but it will be cold because of the currents. Also, because I feel that if you live nearby a body of
water it can affect the weather patterns such as rainfalls and temperatures. For example; there are
two cities one is near a large body of water and the other is miles away. Since a large body of water
has a higher heat capacity than land, so the city that is closer to the body of water narrower range of
temperatures throughout the year. Another reason is because if you live nearby a large body of water,
the cool water that is near the land can create very intense fog, which would affect the weather and
The city of New Orleans isn’t located near by any mountains, which is one of the
reasons also of why I think that there climate is hot and humid. Based on the prevailing winds it
seems that the wind comes from the ocean then from there it goes to New Orleans but not directly it
seems that first it goes to other cities but it doesn’t seem that first it goes to the mountains. So, it
seems that the prevailing winds come from the ocean and then it goes into the direction and into the
city of New Orleans. The type of effect that living near the mountains would cause would be
impacting climate in some ways that don’t even involve elevation. For example; the mountains force
the incoming air to rise, as it does so, it cools and also condenses. This forms clouds and then that
becomes snow or rain, then that usually falls on the windward side of the mountains. So, that can
cause the city that is located near the mountains to have a colder temperature during the winter time
and during the summer the temperature will be hot, but the climate will be dry.
