Introduction
This Special Instruction, REHS3371 provides the information for the installation of serrated master
links on large Track-Type Tractors.

Note: Do not perform any procedure that is outlined in this publication until you have read the
information and you understand the information. Do not order parts until you read the
information and you understand the information.

Do not attempt to disassemble or assemble this machine until you read


and understand the disassembly and assembly instructions. Improper
disassembly and assembly procedures could result in injury or death.

Accidental engine starting can cause injury or death to personnel


working on the equipment.

To avoid accidental engine starting, disconnect the battery cable from


the negative (−) battery terminal. Completely tape all metal surfaces of
the disconnected battery cable end in order to prevent contact with
other metal surfaces which could activate the engine electrical system.

Place a Do Not Operate tag at the Start/Stop switch location to inform


personnel that the equipment is being worked on.

The machine must be on a level, hard surface before a separation of the


track is made. Any time a separation of both tracks is made, the
machine must have blocks correctly positioned so the machine will not
move.

Keep away from the front of the machine when the track is pushed off
the final drive. A minimum distance of 7.6 m (25 ft) is needed in front of
the track to permit the track to move out onto the floor.

Proper Alignment of Master Links at Assembly


Incorrect rotational alignment of master links can lead to a loss of the torque that is applied to the
master link bolts and loosening of the master link bolts. This can occur when a portion of the torque
that is applied to secure the master link bolts is also required to rotate a poorly aligned master link
part.

(2) Press tooling that contacts the link

Tooling that contacts the link (2) should be maintained in good condition. This may require periodic
machining in order to ensure that the surfaces that contact the track components are flat.

Saddle (3) should be maintained in order to properly align the pins and bushings with tooling (2) at
setup. A badly worn saddle (3) may require shims to be placed between the bushing and the saddle in
order to align with tooling (2) at setup.

Alignment of Tooling
Proper alignment of the tooling for the press with the track components is a critical part of the process
for track assembly. Proper alignment of the track components to the tooling for the press ensures the
safety of the assemblers and the quality of the assembled track.

1. Center a pin and a bushing in forward saddle (4), and a bushing in rear saddle (5). Refer to
Illustration 4.

2. Apply the hold-down tool for press (6) to the components in the saddle. Refer to Illustration 4.

3. Move the tooling for the press inward toward the components in the saddle.

4. Adjust the tooling for the press in order to align the tooling accurately with the components in
the saddle.

1. Bolt the mating parts of master link (7) and master link (8) together with correct master link
bolts (10) and the required number of washers in order to duplicate the thickness of a track shoe
(9) .

Note: The washers that are recommended for use in this application are commonly used
for mounting rollers and idlers. Refer to Table 1 for the correct master link bolts and the
correct number of washers that are required to duplicate the thickness of a track shoe.

2. Always use both halves of the master links and bolt both halves together. This will require
maintaining sufficient parts on hand.

3. Since maintaining spare parts for the master links will facilitate this installation, Table 5
provides the master link part numbers for D8, D9, D10, and D11.

4. Apply approximately 200 N·m (150 lb ft) of torque to the master link bolts in order to secure
the washers and the master link (segments) together. A standard 1/2 inch air wrench will
function adequately. Refer to Illustration 6.

1. Align the tooling for the press. Refer to ""Alignment of Tooling" ". Position the bolted master
link on tooling (11) .

2. With bushing (12) in the locating fixture for the saddle, press bushing (12) into the bolted
master links. Verify the correct protrusion for the bushing.

3. Continue assembling the track, removing the master link bolts, the washers, and the segments
for the master link (pin end) as the track is assembled.

Installation of the Master Link (Pin End)

1. Align the tooling for the press. Refer to ""Alignment of Tooling" ". Position the bolted master
link on tooling (13) .

2. Press the master link (pin end) onto pin (14). Verify the correct protrusion for the pin.

3. Remove the bolts, washers, and parts for the master link (bushing end). Store these parts for
future use.
