1. Find the Karl Pearson’s coefficient of correlation from the following data

UNIT-5 (Inferences Concerning Means and Proportions)

1). A sample of 64 students has a mean weight of 70kgs. Can this be regarded as a sample from a
population with mean weight 56kgs and standard deviation 25 kgs.

2). A sample of 400 items is taken from a population whose S is 10. The mean of the sample is
40. Test whether the sample has come from a population with mean 38. Also calculate 95%
confidence interval for the population.

3). Samples of students were drawn from 2 universities and from their weights in KGs, mean and
SD are calculated and shown below. Make a large sample test to test the significance of the
difference between the means.

4) In a sample of 1000 people in Karnataka 540 are rice eaters and the rest are wheat eaters. Can
we assume that both rice and wheat are equally popular in this state at 1% level of significance?

5) If 80 patients are treated with an antibiotic 59 got cured. Find a 99% confidence limits to the
true population of cure.

6) Random samples of 400 men and 600 women were asked whether they would like to have a
flyover near their residence. 200 men and 325 women were in favor of the proposal. Test the
hypothesis that proportions of men and women in favor of the proposal are same, at 5% level.
7) A sample of 26 bulbs gives a mean life of 990 hours with a S.D at 20 hours. The
manufacturer claims that the mean life of bulbs is 1000 hours .Is the sample not up to the
standard?

8) Samples of 2 types of electric light bulbs were test for length of life & following data were
obtained.

10) 200 digits were chosen at random from a set of tables. The frequencies of the digits are

Use CHI-SQUARE- test to assess the correctness of the hypothesis that the digits were

11) Four methods are under development for making discs of a super conducting material 50
discs are made by each method and they are checked for super conductivity when cooled under
liquid nitrogen
