on the image and Dragon’s instruction sheet.
On top of the Green and Brown I applied self-
adhesive circles and masking tape stencils to
replicate the intricate late-war circle pattern
paint scheme.
Afterwards I applied a lightened coat of
Dark Yellow around the stencils to sharpen
the circle edges and provide the contrast
between the layers. Once dry, I removed
the stencils and used part of Alliance
Modelworks’ etched camouflage spraying
stencil to add the spots in between some of
the circles.
After all the painting was completed, I
chipped the areas around the hatches, then
secured the hatches in the open position, the
rear armour upper hull skirts, hand painted
the tools and secured them to the vehicle,
and added the decals and secured them
with some decal solution. The next
step was to add some mud, which
was made from acrylic paste and
MIG pigments. This was applied in
several layers to the hull, wheels and
track, with each layer being a slightly
different shade. Once the mud was
in place I assembled the wheels and

Anzacs
Scale 1:35 / Cobbers

cobbers KEVIN PEART PAYS TRIBUTE IN SCALE TO THE ANZACS

gallipoli front
I
have been fascinated and amazed at the
bravery and futility of the fighting on the
Gallipoli front where perhaps the first word
that comes to mind is ANZAC. Those brave,
hard fighting and playing men from Australia and New
Zealand, all with that typical comradeship seen
everywhere, with officers suffering in the same
conditions as their men and often all dying together
for a few yards of dust and blood-covered ground.
I wanted to do a small tribute to honour these

men who served in this theatre,

hopefully showing their sense of
humour and friendship, enjoying a
‘quiet’ time having a smoke. I chose the
title ‘Cobbers’ as this is slang for mates or
friends so was very apt
Looking around for suitable figures
I found AC Models and The Fusilier had
offerings that more than suited
my needs, so I chose two
from AC, #AC10B19 and
#ACM12B06, and a third
from The Fusilier,
#1208, although
the scales are
different in

Anzacs in Scale

I wanted so much to do this as a tribute to the ANZACs,

and this interaction between the busts works well

that two are 1:12 and the other 1:10 but they
all work well together. The figures and base
were painted using Army Painter, Vallejo,
Andrea, Life Color, Games Workshop, Jo
Sonja, AK Interactive and Reaper colours.
A small amount of filler was needed here
and there, but nothing too detracting, and
the process of bringing the trio to life was
quite cathartic. I wanted so much to do
this as a tribute to the ANZACs, and the
interaction between these busts works well
and looks like they all belong together, all
suitably ‘in theatre’ wearing various dress
styles including helmets. After joining up
together and fighting together and often
dying together in such harsh and brutal
conditions we owe them and our armed
forces everything. Respect to them all.
Thanks to both AC models and The
Fusilier for the build samples.

manuals are well laid out and very clear, and
as a first – well for me anyway - there is a
mistake in the instructions– but unlike other
manufacturers, Takom have admitted error
and issued some ‘Correction Sheets’
in the kit. Be warned though, these
corrections are important, so add
them to the manual and follow
them carefully, as they will upset
the build later on.

prevent such mistakes crews painted
large-dimension crosses or even swastikas
on these tanks, and it was also commonplace
to paint a cross or swastika on top of the

attacking. Another way to overcome this
problem was to use captured T-34/76s in
an infantry support role where recognition
problems were not that common. T-34/76D
(model 1943) tanks with round, twin turret

both hatches were open. Waffen-SS units
also used captured T-34/76 tanks and 2nd SS
Panzer Division ‘Das Reich’ and 3rd SS Panzer
Division ‘Totenkopf’ pressed a significant
number into service. T-34/76 tanks used
by ‘Das Reich’ are of particular interest,

A
t the start of the Second
World War the British
Army was equipped with an
inadequate fleet of
light and cruiser tanks. They were poorly
armoured and armed and largely intended for
reconnaissance work. The heavier Matilda I
(A11) Infantry Tank was first delivered to the
British Army in 1936. This had double the
armour of the cruisers but was only armed
with a machine-gun. It was underpowered,
managing just 8mph cross-country and initially
kept shedding its tracks. The first batch of 60
were ordered in April 1937, later increasing
to 140, all of which had been delivered by
the summer of 1940. In contrast the Matilda
German troops getting a close look at a Matilda captured in France Mark II Infantry Tank was an exception in

the British inventory. Although dubbed the
‘Matilda Senior’ or Matilda II it was in fact a
completely new design from the Mk I. Planned
in the mid-1930s by Colonel Hudson’s team
at the Mechanisation Board it benefited from
work conducted on the A7 medium tank, which
never saw the light of day. Although heavily
armoured, an impressive 78mm on the front
(this was more than twice that of the Panzer
II and III), crucially cross-country it was slow
at 15mph and its 2-pounder (40mm) main
armament lacked real penetrating power.
In late 1937 a total of 165 Matilda IIs were
ordered, but due to the shape and size of the
armour castings the tank was not easy to
mass-produce. When war broke out two years
later there were just two in service. Within
the 1st Army Tank Brigade three battalions

strength and was left behind, but 7RTR arrived himself under the direct control of the CinC
BEF, General the Viscount Gort.
Two days after the Germans launched their
offensive in the west on 10 May 1940, Brigadier
Pratt and his men deployed toward Brussels. In
the meantime over ninety German divisions
swarmed into Belgium, France, the Netherlands
and Luxembourg. Lacking tank transporters,
Pratt’s armour was to be shipped by train while
the rest of the Brigade struggled up the line by
road. Little did Brigadier Pratt realise what a key A Matilda crew take a break from the fighting in the
role his Matildas were to play in the unfolding Western Desert
When Rommel arrived in North Africa he made disaster that was about to engulf the British,
sure that his troops were equipped to deal with the Belgian, Dutch and French armies in northern choked roads through Carvin and Lens to cover
Matilda II Europe. The British tank force struggled along the thirty miles between Orchies and Vimy. The
last of the Brigade reached Vimy at 05.00 on 21
May, thereby delaying their planned attack. The
lack of the trains meant the tanks covered 120
miles in five days and this took its toll in wear
and tear; of the twenty-seven Matilda Mark Is,
worryingly nineteen had been lost and of the
twenty-three Mark IIs just seven of these were
serviceable. The mechanics got to work to try
and rectify this situation.
It was intended that two British columns
would sweep south-east of Arras and catch
Rommel’s spearhead. The right hand column
led by the 7RTR with twenty-three Matilda
Is and nine Matilda IIs was to push through
Duisans, Walrus and Berneville to the
Beaumetz-Arras highway, from where it was
to attack toward Wailly, Ficheux and onto the
Cojeul River. The left hand column lead by
the 4RTR with thirty-five Matilda Is and seven
Matilda IIs was to drive through Dainville,
Achicourt, then split clearing Agny to the
south to Mercatel and the Cojeul; while just
to the north the rest would attack through
Beaurains, Neuville and then onto Wancourt
on the Cojeul. The lumbering Matilda II proved
a nasty shock for Rommel and his panzers.

theirs into the Matilda Frog flame-thrower. In
addition Britain sent over a thousand Matildas
to the Soviet Union, where they were the second

In total there were over a dozen different

It was time now to give the

before this process I gave the

Tamiya X-35 Satin to protect
the paintwork. To give some
volume to the kit, both shadows
and highlights were applied.
The highlights were applied first
using Sennelier Vert Anglais #805,

highlight work done it was time to apply
another protective satin coat. Next using
the Van Gogh #620 Olive Green, #708 Gris

were added. The kit decals are very well printed
with vivid colours, but they are a little transparent,
but this will be taken care of in the final weathering
stages. Only five decals were needed to represent
this version and with the help of Mr Mark Setter and
Mr Mark Softer they were easy to apply. Once dry the
decals received a protective satin coat. Time now to
apply a wash using the AK Interactive #AK045 Dark
Brown to enhance the details even more. Next a final
satin varnish coat was applied, and it was time to test
