1. The students will be able to identify the bones on a skeleton by watching a video and
completing a group activity.
2. The students will be able to recite the function of bones by engaging in a class discussion.

-Function: It protects your brain
2.Shoulder Joint- It is a flat, triangular shaped bone on the back of your shoulder.
-Function: It connects the humorous with the clavicle.
3.Clavicle- collarbone
-Function: to connect the scapula to the sternum.
4.Ribcage- the bony frame formed by the ribs around the chest
-Function: protects heart and lungs
5.Humerus- upper arm bone
-Function: serves as a connector for use of the arm, elbow, wrist, and hand
6.Radius- one of the lower arm bones
-Function: to connect your upper arm to your wrist/hand
7.Ulna- One of the lower arm bones
-Function: to connect your upper arm to your wrist/hand
8.Metacarpals: Long bones within the hand that are connected to the wrist and finger bones.
-Function: They are the bones that make up the hand, serve as an anchor point for the fingers.
9.Femur- the thigh bone. It is the longest, heaviest, and strongest bone. The upper leg bone.
-Function: Supports all of the body’s weight
10.Fibula- one of the lower leg bones
-Function: provide attachment for muscles
11.Tibia- Also known as the shin. It is the larger bone in the lower leg
-Function: supports body weight
12.Metatarsals- bones that make up your foot
-Function: they work to provide movement in the foot and they shape the arch of the foot
13.Vertebrae-26 bones running down the middle of your back
-Function: It is to transmit body weight in walking and standing
14.Pelvis- hip bones
-Function: It is to protect the organs used for digesting and for reproduction (making babies).
15. Patella- known as the knee cap
-Function: It covers and protects the knee joint.

Content/Facts:
How does our body keep its shape?
-The skeleton supports the shape of our body.
What would happen if we did not have bones?
- We wouldn't be able to move properly
- Muscles would have no function
- We would be a pile of skin and organs on the floor
- Our organs would not be properly protected.
What do you think our bones allow us to do?
- Function/move properly
- Frame out body
- Protect our insides (organs)
- Allow out muscles to have something to attach to

Introduction/Activating/Launch Strategies:
 The teacher will have a picture of a Skelton on the smartboard with all the main part of
the body labeled.
 The teacher will start of the lesson with a question: What do you think the bones in our
body help us do? What would happen if we didn’t have bones?
 Tell the students to turn and talk to their partner next to them and discuss their
thoughts. Tell them to talk about the two questions and raise their hands when they are
done discussing.
 Then the teacher will ask the students to raise their hands and tell you what they
thought about the questions that you asked.
 “Today we will be discussing bones and the skeletal system. In a minuet, you will
watch a video on the skeletal system to give you a preview of some of the major bones
in our body. Then we will go over a PowerPoint to review together the major bones
and function/importance of these bones. You will fill out a sheet while going through
the PowerPoint. Then you will break into groups of three and label major bones in our
body on each other with sticky notes. Each group will come to the front and show what
bones you labeled and tell us their function.”

Development/Teaching Approaches
Day One
Part One
 The teacher will ask some background questions to the students to see their knowledge
on the skeletal system before the lesson.
o How does our body keep its shape?
o What do our bones allow us to do?
o What would happen if we didn’t have bones?
Part Two
 The teacher will play the video on the skeletal system to give students some
information on the major bones in our body.

 After the video the teacher will ask if the students have any questions about the video.
 The teacher will hand out a worksheet for the students to fill out while she goes
through the PowerPoint. (See Attached)
 The teacher will go through the PowerPoint and slowly go over each major bone and
where it is in the body.
 Students will use the skeletal handout to label where the bones are in the body.
 As the teacher goes through the PowerPoint she will have the students fill out on the
front where the bone is and on the back they will write the function of that bone based
on the PowerPoint.
 The teacher will have a bigger version of the skeletal handout on the board and fill it
out with the students as they go through the PowerPoint. (This is so they have two
ways to know where to label it and going over the correct spelling for them.)

Day Two
Part Three
 The teacher will explain the activity: “In groups of three you will trace one person’s
body on a large sheet of paper. After tracing you will label parts of the body that we
went over on the sheet. You will want to label 10 different parts of the body splitting
up the top, middle, and bottom of the body. Next to the label of the bone you will write
a short description of the function/importance.”
 The teacher will already have an example on the front of the board for the students to
refer to but make sure you tell them to not copy exactly what the example says.
 The teacher will then assign the students to and group and give them a large sheet of
paper and markers to label the body
 The students are allowed to use their skeleton handouts to help them with the activity.
Part Four
 The students will come up in groups and tell the class what parts of the body they
labeled and give a short description of their function.
 After each group comes up the teacher will tell the students to go back to their seats.
 The teacher will have the students put their notes away and she will pass out their exit
slips.
 The teacher will tell the students that on their exit slips they must write five major
bones and their function/importance without using their notes.
Closure/Summarizing Strategies:
 Collect all the students exit slips.
 Teacher will ask the class as a whole what is their favorite bone and its function and
why?
 The teacher will tell all the students to get up and spread around the room. She will put
on the skeleton dance where the students can sing and dance along with the video.

 Wrap up the lesson by telling the class that tomorrow we will continue the skeletal
system and start learning about the joints in our body.

Accommodations/Differentiation:
For a student with ED, I would pre-assign them to a group that I know they will work well
with.
