For example, a Cmaj7 has an unaltered 7th step—1-3-5-7. A Cmaj9 has an unaltered

Playing Tip
You can substitute a 9th
chord for any 7th chord.
Playing Tip
When you see a 9th chord, you can
substitute a half-diminished 7th chord
built on the 3rd of the 9th chord.
For example, an E half-diminished chord could be substituted for a C9th. Or if the chord is an F7 or F9, then
an A half-diminished chord could be used.
