Many normal things in the world today started from China. China has
been one of the major inventors of the world. Ever since 5,000 years ago,
they have started inventing and until now haven’t stopped inventing the
world’s best products. Through our module “From China to the World”, we
were able to modify an Ancient Chinese Invention, the Chain Pump and
applied it to the Philippine setting to help the people of the Philippines.

ORIGIN OF THE NAME OF THE MODIFIED INVENTION

It took us a long time to figure out any possible names for our group.
We thought names like Lakeside or Luminar but we figured out that they had
no connection to our topic. We thought even harder until we reached better
names like the XCE’s Modified Chain Pump but we still figured out they had
not so much connection to our great modified invention. Until we started
from scratch and analyzed the old and the modern names of the chain
pumps. From there, we were able to draw the first words of each of the
names which were “Chain” and Conveyer. Since one of our major
modifications is changing the materials used for the invention, we found
importance in this portion and believed it would be good to have it part of
the name of our invention. So, those three words, “Chain”, “Conveyer” and
“Metal” made our modified ancient Chinese Invention’s name : “Metal Chain
Conveyer”

OBJECTIVES OF THE GROUP

Our goal is to alleviate the rice crisis in the Philippines through better
irrigation through our modified ancient Chinese invention, the Metal Chain
Conveyer

BRIEF HISTORY OF THE ANCIENT CHINESE INVENTION

The chain pump is an ancient Chinese invention whose time of origin is
unclear though it is estimated to have been invented at the 1st Century A.D.,
although standard forms throughout China have been reported in about 828
AD. At this period, the chain pump was just used for irrigation purposes in
farms. Though in later years, it has also been used to transport soil and
earth. The pump is powered manually by human beings. The pump hauls
enormous quantities of water from lower to higher levels. An optimum angle
of 240 is needed to lay down the paddles. Depending on how well the
paddles are fitted and the strength of the entire machine, the machine could
raise water up to 15 feet in height. In the olden times, wood is the material
used for the chain pump. The original invention uses paddles whereas newer
models may use cups.

BRIEF HISTORY OF MODERN INVENTIONS

The modern chain pump is really different from the ancient one. They are
different in the form of energy the machine is powered, the purpose of the
chain pump, the materials used to make the invention and even the users of
this machine. Unlike the ancient Chinese Chain Pump, the modern chain
pump is powered through electricity. During the olden times, the chain pump
is used to transfer earth, soil and water, but nowadays, it is used in factories
where items are transferred through a conveyer belt. It is also used in
airports where it holds the luggage of the passengers in an aircraft. The
ancient Chinese invention usually uses wood but nowadays, rubber is used
for the outer coating while metal covers everything else. Even the name has
changed. The name of the modern chain pump is already called a conveyer
belt.

PROCEDURES FOLLOWED IN
MODIFYING OUR INVENTION
We could say this experience of
modifying an invention is
difficult, but we successfully
pulled through. We started out
researching about our chosen
invention, the chain pump. We
thoroughly studied the
invention. With our knowledge
on the invention, we were able to spot the weaknesses of the invention. We
believe we have made good modifications. We had group discussions during
study period to help mix all our good modifications to make a great one. We
also got some ideas from the science museum about perpetual motion.
Through this, we were able to make a source of power for our invention.
Through these procedures, we were able to modify our invention.

CONCEPTS USED IN MODIFYING THE INVENTION

Weaknesses Modifications Reasons
Energy Perpetual  We learned the laws of gravity and
collected Motion kinds of energy. We learned perpetual
from Human motion. Through this, we were able to
Power think of perpetual motion. Perpetual
through motion is a motion that “never stops”. It
paddling. continues as long as there is gravity
since gravity pulls the water down and
thus able to spin the mechanism.
(SCIENCE)
 Through our knowledge in Kinds and
Properties of Materials, we will use
plastic for this invention because plastic
is light and is rust-proof, so more energy
will be produced since more rotations are
expected and the material will last
longer. (SCIENCE)

Water Wheel • We enclosed it in a casing with an

opening and closing so that more energy
will be collected because more force will
be produced since there will be only one
entry of water and the force is
concentrated there. (SCIENCE)
• Using geometry in Math, we calculated
the circumference of our water wheel
and decided to make it larger. Through
estimation, we were able to estimate
that more energy will be collected
because the wheel would be bigger.
(MATH)
• Using Kinds and Properties of
Materials, we will use plastic so that it
will be light and will move faster, thus
gathering more energy. (SCIENC E)
Components Wood is • We learned Kinds and Properties of

weak Stainless Steel wood decays. So that our invention would

(WOOD) Aluminum) wood into Stainless Steel which isn’t
completely rust proof but compared to
other metals, it has a cheap price and
will most likely rust 5-10 years after
being used. We can also use Dura-
aluminum because it is cheap, light and
rust-proof. (SCIENCE)

CONCLUSIONS
We therefore conclude that through our modifications, we may help the
people of the Philippines especially the farmers. Because through our
invention, water is transferred more easily; through that more rice will be
produced because fields will be watered. More rice produced will mean
cheaper prices for every Filipino family. This will surely improve the
economy of the Philippines.

RECOMMENDATIONS
 We recommend patenting our work.
 We recommend to submit our work to the DA (Department of Agriculture)
and DOST (Department of Science and Technology)
 We recommend making a prototype to make further learning.
 We recommend to research more on the newer models to learn more of
possible modifications.
 We recommend surveying farmers and giving model units to know what
their comments are about our invention and through that learn more
from our invention and make possible modifications.
 We recommend sending a letter to local governments to ask for their
support in our modified invention. We will also ask for monetary
assistance.
