INUIT PEOPLE

The Inuit is a common name for the different peoples that inhabit the
Arctic regions of America . The word means "The people"
(in Inuktitut , Inuit ), the singular is Inuk , which means "man" or
"person".
Inuit is the generic name of the human groups that inhabit the
Arctic. The Inuit have endured the life of the Arctic for thousands of
years and have a great experience to survive on the ice . They live in
the tundras of northern Canada , Alaska and Greenland . It is
estimated that some 150,000 people live in this region. They develop
a nomadic life , following the migrations of the animals that they hunt,
among which the caribou , bears , whales and seals can stand out. Of
these and other animals take advantage of all possible parts to feed,
shelter, build housing and tools to hunt. The hunting of seals and the
fishing allow them to obtain food even in the harsh winter of the Arctic.
The sled dog has an important role in the Inuit life. On snow or ice, a
team of dogs drag the qamutik , a sledge made of wood, bones of
animals, beards from the mouth of a whale and even frozen fish. 3
The Inuit are organized in family groups and each member is assigned
a specific task. The Inuit culture of Canada is known above all for its
crafts, especially its sculptures, most of them in soapstone , whose
sale is an important source of income for several Inuit communities.

regiones árticas de América. La palabra significa «La gente» (en inuktitut, inuit),
el singular es inuk, que significa «hombre» o «persona».
Inuit es el nombre genérico de los grupos humanos que habitan el Ártico. Los
inuit han soportado la vida del Ártico durante miles de años y tienen una gran
experiencia para poder sobrevivir en el hielo. Viven en las tundras del norte
de Canadá, Alaska y en Groenlandia. Se calcula que viven en esta región
unas 150 000 personas. Desarrollan una vida nómada, siguiendo las
migraciones de los animales que cazan, entre los cuales pueden destacarse
los caribúes, osos, ballenas y focas. De estos y otros animales aprovechan
todas las partes posibles para alimentarse, abrigarse, construir viviendas y
herramientas para cazar. La caza de focas y la pesca les permiten conseguir
alimentos incluso en el crudo invierno del Ártico.
El perro de trineo tiene un papel importante en la vida inuit. Sobre la nieve o el
hielo, un equipo de perros arrastran el qamutik, un trineohecho de madera,
huesos de animales, barbas de la boca de una ballena e incluso pescado
congelado.3
Los inuit están organizados en grupos familiares y cada miembro tiene
asignada una tarea específica. La cultura inuit de Canadá es conocida sobre
todo por su artesanía, especialmente sus esculturas, la mayoría en esteatita,
cuya venta supone una fuente importante de ingresos para varias
comunidades inuits.
