Itis far simpler to state that Anatoly Karpoy, is without doubt, one of the greatest chessplayers who ever lived. After winning the World Junior Championship in 1969, Karpov became a grandmaster in 1970 and rose rapidly through the ranks of young Soviet chess stars to establish himself as a legitimate World Championship Contender. Karpov became World Champion in 1975 - atitle he would hold for the next ten years. Most recently, he recaptured the FIDE crown in 1993 by defeating Timmon in the Holland/Indonesia FIDE World Championship Match. He is the most successful toumament player of all time, and it is a testament to his resolve and talent that this seemingly forever young knight of the chessboard recently posted the most spectacular result of his career by winning the 1994 Linares ““Supergrandmaster” event by a crushing margin. Anatoly Karpov is probably the world’s leading expert on the handling of the Caro-Kann Defense. His practical, no-nonsense style of writing and elucidation will ably serve the reader as a guide through this strategically and tactically complex defense.
