World War 1 (WW1) began in 1914 and ended in 1918.

The entire war mostly took

place in Europe. There were two groups of alliance involved the Allied power and Central
power. The Allied power was Great Britain, Russia, and France. The Central power were
Germany, Italy, Ottoman Empire, and Austria-Hungary. During the war countries use a strong
Militarism.Also countries like France needed an alliance like Russia that had Frances back
during the war. During the war Imperialism was happening to, Great Britain was controlling
countries during the war. Nationalism is where people are too proud of their country and could
cause a war. The four causes that started the World War 1 was militarism, alliances,
imperialism,and nationalism.

Militarism is one of the reasons why world war 1 started. In document 1 it shows that
both central and allied power spending on weapons increased from 1870 to 1914. In 1870 Great
Britain spent $3.17 per capita, in 1914 they spent $8.23 per person. Because Britain was
spending so much on armaments other countries fear Britain was growing too strong they also
increased spending. Other countries may have feared Britain because of their strong army, and
think that Britain has better weapons, the other countries want to start a war. In document 7 it
shows both central and allied power spending British pounds on the army and navy. In 1914
Germany spend about 90 million pounds on the army. Great Britain spent about 30-75 million
pounds spent on the navy from 1890-1914. Because Germany spended more money to improve
and have better army than other countries. But the other countries have strong opinions about it.
The other countries want to get the same thing as Germany to have a better army so this could
lead to war.

Another reason that caused the war is alliances. In document 4 it states “If France is
attacked by Germany or by Italy supported by Germany, Russia shall employ all her available
forces to attack Germany.” France and Russia has each others backs when either one of the
country get attacked the other country comes and help. Russia comes and helps France out when
being attacked by Germany. Germany does not want Russia to help France. So alliances could
start a war. In document 9 it states “...Franco-Russian alliance was held together by financials
well as political and strategic ties.” France is paying Russia for their economy so one day when
France gets attacked Russia could help. When one country is paying another country economy in
order to help. The other countries get mad for not helping them. This is another way to start a
war.

The third cause of World War 1 is Imperialism. In document 3 it shows Britain having
33,000,00 sq. km. for area and 400,000,00 colonies. that Britain controlled and Britain had the
most area and population of colonies than other countries. Britain has more power and other
countries fear that Britain gets more area and controlling colonies the more power Britain will
gain. When Britain takes over all the land and ends up controlling all the colonies. Other
countries want the same thing. The other countries want to start a war because of it. In document
10 the map called “Freiheit Der Meere” meaning “Freedom Of The Seas” a German drew the
map trying to show a British octopus stretching its arms to different countries and controlling
them. Germany is showing Britain is taking over other countries for their own benefits and
Britain having more power. Smaller countries who are being controlled by Britain are called
colonies and the colonies does not want to be controlled by Britain. When another mother
country like Germany saw what Britain has Germany wants to start a war.

The final cause that started the war was Nationalism. In document 2 in August 3,1914 in
Great Britain Russell Bertrand wrote “...especially in the neighbourhood of Trafalgar square,
noticing cheering crowds…” The crowds are cheering and proud that their country Great Britain
are going to war. When one country has a lot of pride and feel way better than other countries.
Then other countries does not feel the same way, so it could lead to war. In document 5 it states
“Rule Britannia! Britannia! Britons never will be slaves.” Britain feels powerful, proud, and not
feeling shame of their own country. Also nothing is making Britain a slave or feel less
powerful.If Britain is more powerful and think their the leader than other countries. Then other
countries have a strong opinion about it. Nationalism is another way to start a war.

There may be different reasons that cause of world war 1 to start but there are four main
reasons why world war 1 started. The reasons are because of militarism, alliances, imperialism,
and nationalism. Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia because of the assassination of
Archduke Franz Ferdinand who was Austrian and about to become a king. Gavrilo Princip who
was Serbian killed Franz Ferdinand in order to save his country. The war that Austria-Hungary
declared to Serbia it started at June 28, 1914 and ended at November 11,1918. This is one of the
main reasons why the war has started.
