CHAPTER 1. INTRODUCTION

Ground water has been a source of drinking water and irrigation since the dawn of
recorded history. It is the most important natural resources because of the physiological
needs of man, animal, and plant. It not only supports life on earth, but also governs the
economic, industrial, and agricultural growth of nation.

The many uses of water – agricultural, domestic, industrial, pollution control,

recreation, maintenance of aquatic life, power generation and navigation – are all related
to the economic, mental, and physical health of the world’s population. Water is required
not only in sufficient quantity, but of potable quality to live a healthy life and amongst the
different components of the water resources of a nation, ground water is the most widely
distributed, dependable and pure.

The requirement though in order to for us to acquire this water is by lifting it from
below the ground. In the old days of civilization, man and animal power were used for
water lifts. When ways of obtaining mechanical advantage became known, man began to
apply the principles of simple machines, like the lever, pulley, screw, and inclined pane in
lifting the water. This was followed by the development of positive – displacement piston
pumps operated manually or by windmills. The advent of mechanical power and modern
machinery revolutionized the technology of water lifts to meet almost any requirement.
And thus, water pump jack machines have been developed.

A water well pump jack is a device used to mechanically lift the water from below
the ground using a sucker rod. These sucker rods work in a reciprocating motion and as it
moves up and down it increases the pressure from the well and lifts the water from the
reservoir to the surface. These machines are powered by prime movers or electric motors

1
CHAPTER 2. OBJECTIVES

The water well pump jack uses a mechanism that converts rotary motion to
reciprocating linear motion. So, the main objective is to design a mechanism that compose
of simple machines that will convert a rotary motion to linear motion.

The movement of the sucker rod that is derived from a crank and connecting rod
mechanism. The sucker rod also must be long enough to reach the ground water.

The prime mover is an AC motor and it will connect to a gearbox which composes
of a pair of helical gears.

The helical gears will then connect to belt and pulley mechanism.

The last pulley of the mechanism will have a shaft inserted from its center hole that
have two spur gears at the two ends of the shaft.

These two spur gears will have a pair that must be ideally large and these gears will
each have a connecting rod that must also be connected to the sucker rod.

The first pair of the mechanism which are the helical gears produces a rotary motion
up to the last pair of spur gears. It is the connecting rod of the last spur gear that will convert
the motion to linear by connecting it to a vertical body that will slide the sucker rod up and
down.

The final output of the mechanism must have a low rpm (revolution per minute) so
that the life of the machine would not be short.

parts being labeled and function and various views were also shown.

CHAPTER 7. HOW DOES YOUR MECHANICAL SYSTEM WORKS

This chapter will discuss how the water well pumpjack mechanism works in details.

The AC motor with a horsepower of 15 and a rotation of 1800 rpm is being deliver
to the helical gear with a diameter of 9 inches by means of using a belt that is connected to
the shaft of the helical gear and motor. The rotation speed of the large gear is being transfer
to its mating gear which has a diameter of 3 inches. Their speed ratio is 3:1 and the rotation
of the small helical gear is 5400. Note that the factors affecting the rotational speed of these
pair would be their diameter as well as the number of their teeth
D1 = 9 inches
D2 = 3 inches N1 = 1800 rpm
N2 = 5400 rpm
AC motor
horsepower = 15
N =1800 rpm

18
The small helical gear has a shaft that is connected to the pulley which has a
diameter of 5 inches that will connect to the large pulley with a diameter of 18 inches by
means of a rubber belt. The rotation speed of the small pulley would be 5400 rpm and the
rpm of the large pulley would be 1500 rpm. Speed ratio is 18:5

The large pulley has a long shaft inserted in its hole with two spur gears connected
at both ends.

19
These spur gears connected will have a diameter of 3 inches and its mating gear has
a diameter of 18 inches. Speed ratio is 6:1 and their rotation movement would be 250 and
1500 rpm respectively. The large spur gear has a connecting rod that is also connected to
the sucker rod. The rotary motion of the whole mechanism will be converted into a linear
reciprocating motion by means of having a rigid body that will create a sliding motion back
and forth. The sucker rod will lift the water below the ground and it will flow out with the
help of the pipe inserted in the rigid body.

CHAPTER 8. APPLICATION

In this chapter, the real-life application of the water well pump jack is shown. The
mechanism developed had helped in order to lift the water from below the ground.

CHAPTER 9: CONCLUSION

This activity has made me more knowledgeable about simple machines,

particularly the ones that I used which are the belt and pully, helical gears, and spur gears.
Through this mechanism also I had known more about the water well pump jack.

Water well pump jack is indeed a fascinating machine. I love how it was structure
and how its mechanism works. Even though its use is somehow limited and applicable in
some areas only, this machine is helpful to provide groundwater which is our primary
source for living and also for plants and animals.

Through countless hours of watching video tutorials and learning how Solidworks
software is used. I had become happy and somehow proud of what I did in designing this
mechanism. My effort in doing this made me learn something meaningful, it had made me
equipped for the future.
