Course Title: Implementing Formative Assessment with the TI-NspireTM NavigatorTM

System

Has this course run before? Yes / No If yes, when? (Title must not be
changed)

Instructor name: Sondra Polan

After school contact phone number: (516) 439-7925

Purpose of course: (Why? What is the need? Broad general statement)

The TI-Nspire™ Navigator™ System is a great tool to be used in the classroom enabling teachers
to conduct formative assessments easily. The reports generated by the system help teachers
identify students struggling with the material. In addition, teachers can differentiate instruction
by sending different tasks to different students. However, for teachers to feel comfortable
using this technology in the classroom, there is a need formal instruction.

Course description: (to be used in catalog/newsletter)

This workshop explores the formative assessment features of the TI-Nspire™ Navigator™
System in the context of secondary mathematics curriculum. Participants will learn how to set
up their classes, create quick polls and quizzes, collect student data, and generate and access
reports. We will explore the various questioning features available in the application and
create a question bank that can be used in the classroom. Participants will also be shown how
the Navigator system can be used to differentiate instruction by sending different tasks to
different students. By the end of the workshop, participants will be comfortable using the TI-
Nspire™ Navigator™ System to formatively assess student understanding and best respond to
varying needs.
All course participants must submit a lesson plan that incorporates higher-level questions that require critical
thinking and analysis OR the use of a formative assessment. Participants may also be asked to complete a
survey (provided by the Teacher Center) that will reflect teachers’ instructional changes made in order to
implement the Common Core Standards.

Subject/grade level appropriate: Mathematics/ Middle School and High School

incorporate into their lesson plans as a result of this course.
(If unsure, please give general statement)

The questions and activities that will be used for the workshop will be based on the common

Currently I am pursing a second masters at New York Institute of Technology, Old Westbury,
NY in Instructional Technology. By the beginning of the fall 2017, I will have completed seven
of the eleven courses in the program. I presented an overview the TI Nspire Navigator system
on May 10, 2017 to the EMHS math department.

.No course will be included in the Teacher Center fall, winter/spring or summer
