Polan’s classroom
September 2017,
Dear Students,
I am looking forward to an exciting and productive year working with you. We will be using a considerable
amount of technology in class this year and I would like to clarify some of our classroom policies concerned
with the use of the school’s laptops, the TI Nspire calculators, computer applications and programs, and the
internet. These policies are a supplement not a replacement to East Meadow School district’s Acceptable
Use Policy. For your convenience, I am including a link to East Meadow’s school district’s policy: AUP.
Please make sure to review this policy again and ask me questions if you are confused by any of its
requirements. Noncompliance can forfeit your use of the school’s computers and internet access.
Attached is my supplement to East Meadow’s Acceptable Use Policy. Please review this policy with your
parents. Both you and your parents must sign the acknowledgement sheet indicating that you and your
parents agree to its terms and conditions. Please feel free to contact me with any questions by email at
spolan@emufsd.us or by the math office phone number (516)228-5331x 1337. Please return the
acknowledgment sheet only to tomorrow’s class.
Sandy Polan

Part II: Purpose, Benefit, Regulations for Use of Digital Tools
These are some of the digitals tools or technology which we will frequently use in class
1) Computer Laptops
● Benefits
There are numerous educational resources offered on the Internet. Interactive simulations offered
by Rice Virtual Labs (link) and classroom activities offered by Desmos (link) enhance a student’s
understanding of course material. During certain group activities, students will work collaboratively
using programs such as Word and Excel. Students can submit assignment digitally through Teams.
2) TI Inspire Calculators
● Purpose of Digital Tool
We will be using the TI Navigator system on a daily basis during the school year. The TI Navigator is
a wireless network that connects the teacher’s computer with their students’ TI Nspire calculators.
This enables the teacher to easily share documents, submit assessments, collect and analyze student
work.
● Benefits
Through the TI Navigator system, the teacher can create polls and quizzes which are sent to student’s
calculators wirelessly. Once students submit their responses, I can instantly assess student’s
understanding of the material. The results can be viewed anonymously and discussed immediately
with the class. The program also has the ability to capture the screens of students’ calculators. This
3
helps me keep all students on task. Another feature allows the teacher to choose a student to act as
presenter providing opportunities to explain their work.
● Benefits
Assigning and collecting student work digitally saves valuable time allowing the teacher to use
classroom time more efficiently. Students and Teachers can easily communicate with each other
outside of the physical classroom allowing teachers to offer students more guidance, clarifying
concepts, and feedback on their work. Students can collaborate with each other on group projects as
well as assisting each other.

4. Microsoft Forms
● Purpose of Digital Tool
Microsoft Forms is a free online tool similar to Google forms which allows users to create forms,
surveys, and quizzes and easily sent to others. Once a form or survey is completed responses are
recorded in an Excel spreadsheet that can be analyzed.
● Benefits
Microsoft forms is an alternate way to assess understanding of course content. Pictures and videos
can be inserted into the question. In addition, surveys can be quickly created to collect data for
various statistical activities. Students can easily design their own surveys for projects.
● Rules for Use
a) Students can access Forms through notification link or going directly to Forms app
b) Form must be completely on or before due date. There is a time and date stamp recorded in Excel
sheet.
c) All questions must be completed.
d) The application allows you to enter math symbols into responses when needed
e) If students are designing a survey, it must be approved by the teacher before sending out to
others.
5. Smart Phones
● Purpose of Digital Tool
Smart phones can be used to access the school district’s office 365 applications. In addition, notifications
of assignments can be sent directly to the student’s phone. Free applications like Microsoft’s Office Lens
allow students to scan documents as a pdf or picture and send directly to applications in Office 365 such
as OneDrive, Word, OneNote , PowerPoint, Outlook, and the Immersive Reader. Please note that
students are not required to have a smartphone for class.
● Benefits
The smartphone is a convenient way for students and teachers to communicate outside of the
classroom. Notifications of assignments, test dates, feedback on student work, and other
announcements can be sent directly to a student’s phone. Using their phone, students’ can easily upload
their work into many of the Microsoft Office 365 applications. Students can also access notes and
answer keys found in the Class Notebook.
Warning: Cell Phones/Smartphones can be a major distraction in class. If students are engaged in
activities such as viewing social media and messages as well as texting, they will miss what is happening
in class. Therefore, students may only use phones in class for instructional purposes with teacher
permission and under the direction of the teacher
5
● Rules for Use
a) At the beginning of each class, cellphones, smartphones, etc should be placed in the “off” or “silent”
mode
b) Students may only use phones in class for instructional purposes with permission from the teacher.
c) Cell phones/smartphones, must be off and out of site during tests and other assessments.
d) Any pictures or videos taken during class must be for instructional purposes only. Students may not
take pictures or record videos of other students or teachers without permission from these parties.
e) Students may not call or receive phone calls during class. If a parent needs to reach their child, they
should contact the main office.
f) Students may not text or view texts, messages, or use social media such as Facebook during class.
g) If these rules are not followed some of the consequences are : confiscation of phone for day, loss of
privilege of bringing phone to class, detention and other appropriate disciplinary actions.
