Yard Art Challenge Design Brief

Client: A-1 Tree Removal, Inc.

Target Consumer: General Public

Designer: ________James T Parana____________

Problem Statement:
A local debris removal company disposes of a large amount of tree debris and plywood
scraps. The owner of the company would like to investigate recycling some of the usable
wood by building woodland animal yard ornaments using the wood debris.

Design Statement:
Design, build, test, document, and present a conceptual design for a yard ornament that
can be manufactured from tree debris or plywood scraps.

Criteria:
1. The yard ornament must resemble and be proportional in size to a specific gender
and subspecies of deer or elk (Key deer, white tailed deer, Rocky Mountain elk, etc.).
Note that the yard ornament can be at a larger or smaller scale than the animal, but
must be proportional.
2. The yard ornament must be constructed mostly of tree and plywood debris, but may
include small ornamental parts to improve aesthetics, if deemed desirable.
3. Tree debris, if used, must reflect wood species typically found in the local area.
4. The yard ornament can weigh no more than 125 pounds.
5. The yard ornament must consist of at least 3 separate pieces for easy assembly and
disassembly.
6. The yard ornament must NOT tip over when a force of 50 pounds is applied at the
top of the BODY of the animal (not including the neck or head).
Yard Art Challenge Deliverables (57pts)
1. Define a problem - design brief (2pts) and picture of you with your creation on the screen (2pts)
2. Generate concepts
2.1. Brainstorming sketches of your possible designs with approximate dimensions (2pts)
2.2. Pieces modeled in Inventor - large slide show of .ipt files (6pts)
2.3. Teacher’s signature verifying efficient browser __________________________(3pts)
3. Develop a solution
3.1. Technical drawings - large slide show of .idw files (3pts)
3.2. Proper front view selected (1pt)
3.3. Enough dimensions are included to provide conceptual understanding of the design and those
dimensions are following dimensioning rules (5pts) Teacher’s signature______________
4. Construct and test prototype
4.1. "Bubbled" drawing - large picture (3pts)
4.2. Which assembly constraint(s) did you use to constrain the parts your yard art such that it did not
move? Describe each of the constraint types used and explain the degrees of freedom that are
removed when each is applied between two parts. (2pts)
4.3. Screenshot of degrees of freedom verification with a caption (3pts)
5. Evaluate the solution
5.1. Picture of an .idw files as shown in provided example (2pts) Teacher’s signature_____________
5.2. Proper COG – initial sketch started at the origin (2pts)
5.3. Calculations are correct and proper units are used (5pts)
5.4. Proper material assigned (1pt)
5.5. Weight is under 125 lbs (3pts)
5.6. Withstands force of 50 lbs or more (5pts)
5.7. Explain how you compared the final design to the design criteria. Did you have to adjust anything in
your design? Provide written explanations to help a person unfamiliar with the work understand
how the calculations inform the design process, provide evidence used to identify deficiencies (use
screenshots of .idw with calculations before adjustments), and identify appropriate next steps in
pursuit of a better solution (use screenshots of .idw with calculations after adjustments) (5pts)
6. Present the solution – in your conclusion address and justify the efficiency of a solid model with respect
to the use of additive and subtractive methods based on your model creation experience; describe how the
location of the solid model within the grid system will affect the physical properties displayed (such as
COG); explain how the design is supported by consideration of economic, environmental, social, political,
ethical, health and safety, manufacturability, technical feasibility and/or sustainability considerations, as
applicable. Finally, address you second major Inventor experience – di you use new features; di you run
into any trouble; did you learn something? (5pts)
