Grammar: A lot / much / many
A. We use much + uncontable noun.
much money much food
much time much coffee We use many + plural noun.
Examples: many books many stores
• Do you drink much coffee? Many people many questions
• How much money do you have? Examples:
• She doesn’t have much time. • Do you know many people?
• A: Do you have any money? • How many photographs did you take?
B: I have some but not much. • He doesn’t have many friends?
• A: Did you take any photograps?
B: I took some but not many.

We use a lot of + uncountable or plural noun:
a lot of money a lot of coffee a lot of people a lot of questions

• I drink a lot of coffee. * I know a lot of people.


• We spent a lot of money. * We took a lot of photographs.
• She doesn’t have a lot of free time. * Did they ask you a lot of questions.

B. We use much in questions and negative sentences.
• Do you drink much coffee / a lot of coffee?
• I don’t drink much coffee.

We use many and a lot (of) in all kinds of sentences:


• Do you know many people / a lot of people?
• I don’t know many people / a lot of people.
• I know many people / a lot of people.

Grammar: little / a few
A. We use little with uncontable
nouns.
little energy little money
We use few with plural nouns.
few cars few countries

B. Little / a little / few / a few
Little and a few (without a) are negative ideas:
• Hurry up! There’s little time. ( = not much, not enough time)
• He’s not popular. He has few friends. (= not many, not enough friends)

“A little” and “a few” are more positive ideas. A little / afew = some, a small amount,
or a small number.
• Let’s go and have a cup of coffee. We have a little time before the train leaves. (=some
time, enough time to have a drink)
• I enjoy my life here. I have a few friends and we get together. ( a few friends = not
many but enough to have a good time)

1. In my refrigerator, there’s always a jar / a jar of spaghetti and a quart of /a few

* Stir-fry: to cook food quickly by moving it around in hot oil.
Example: stir-fried vegetables
2. Grilled shrimp
* Grill: to cook something by putting it close to strong heat above or below it.
3. Steamed vegetables
* Steam: To cook food with steam.

* Boil: to cook food in water that is boiling.

* Bake: to cook food in an oven.

* Raw: raw food has not been cooked, or has not been throughtly cooked.

* Smoke: to preserve and give flavour to fish or other food by hanging it in
smoke.
