End-Of-Year Portfolio

Since the first English class in grade12, my goal is to improve my listening, reading, writing

and speaking skill. The reason is I need to get at lease “6” score in IELTS for apply university. I

thought that it is a good chance for me to improve my skill with foreigner teacher so, I believed that

learning in school with instructor will be more efficiency than extra tutorial class.

In the first quarter, our main curriculum focus on literary analysis, annotation, poem and

biography of William Carlos Williams. Williams is a poet mentor for all of students so, in the first

quarter most of the poem that we learn in class will be William’s poem. He is a poet during world

war I. Furthermore, we learn about writing in TIQA format to analysed those poem. For example,

one of our assignment is to analysed “Complaint” in TIQA format. I approach this assignment by

read though the poem and try to understand how technique develop theme and analysed it. This

assignment improved my reading, analyse, evaluate and writing skill. The reason is I have to really

understand meaning of the poem before thinking a topic. On the other hand, one of the assignment

that I struggle with is the one that students have to mimic William’s poem. Firstly, we have to know

his style and technique that poet use in each poem. Actually, It is too hard for me to mimic poem.

Most of the time I have no idea about inspiration and vocabulary to wrote a poem but, one things

that help me a lot for this assignment is to peer review with my friend. They always told me a

technique to improve a poem before turn in an assignment. Moving on our final project, we have to

apply all of knowledge and skill during quarter 1 to wrote an essay, poem and reflection. This

project really challenged me because I have to find evidence, recognise literary device and skill of

reading, analysing, critical thinking and writing to finished this project.

For the second unit, we learn about Academic research. We continue to read, analyse

literature devices but we have to include theory to support our work. There are three theories that

required in this class is Psychoanalytical Theory, Feminist Theory and Marxist Theory. During

learning those theory, one of my favourite assignment is “We Should All Be Feminists-Note-Taking

Sheet TED Talk”. For this assignment we have to take brief notes while listening TED Talk. I

thought that this assignment are really useful because students will be able to improve skill of

listening and thinking in the same time. Speaker also talked about Feminist theories that related to

our lesson in easily way so, it made me understand more about feminist theory in short time.

Moreover, I have to choose one novel to read for the whole quarter. I preferred to read “Animal

farm- George Orwell”. In each chapter we have to taking a note. This note-taking really help me to

understand the story better because I have to analysed and conclude each chapter in one paper. In

every pages of note-taking it will include definition of unknown vocabulary, main idea and keyword

of each chapter. Those note-taking and knowledge of theories are support my final project. I have

to write an analytical research essay about Animal Farm. The essay approaching to feminist theory.

This project develop me in term of doing research because I have to find reliable resource and

analyse it.

Moving on last unit, we learn about non-fiction. Our main curriculum divided into three

different genre which is journal, memoir and graphic memoir. This unit make me able to know

meaning of non-fiction and compare how it non-fiction and fiction are different. We have a chance

to learn about structure of news and journalism. We have to observed sample of newspaper and

journal such as "The Meaning of Allahu Akbar”. For memoir, we also read real sample of memoir

such as “Me Talk Pretty One Day”. We discover how writer express his idea, feeling and

experienced. Lastly, teacher choose “Persepolis” as a sample for graphic memoir. We have to study

about basic information of this book and biography of Majane Satrapi. We have a small-group

assignment about Majane Satrapi by research her biography and present it to our classmate. In my

opinion , this assignment improved my reading, analysing, presenting and the way to communicated

with other member in group. In addition, One of the most challenged project in this unit is debate

because I’m a person who have no confident to speak English so, I have to overcome my obstacle to

speak in front of the class. The topic is Does religion create more violence or more peace?. For this

assignment we have to agree that religion create more peace. From my point of view, we have to

read a lot of article about benefit of religion to prove our thesis. This project make me proud of

myself, even our group lose to other group but I already show my ability to other people. For the

final project, I choose graphic memoir instead of writing a journalism or memoir. This is the most

valuable assignment because I can apply my artistic skill in this project. I have to pick up one of my

memorable moment to creating a graphic memoir. I’m start the project with organised the story in

each scene. Then, did a rough draft and peer review to get an advice with my friend, family and

teacher before start the final one. Actually, this assignment is not only art skill but, dialogue and

caption also important so, I’m really worry for this part. I try so hard to make it more reasonable

and let many people check a grammar before turn in the project. However, I hope that this project

will be my best work because it is the last final project.

In conclusion, even I’m didn’t get a good score but this class really push me to reach my

goal. I really appreciate my IELTS score which is overall “6” and “6.5” score for both reading and

speaking skill. I’m sure that the reason is I have to read a lot of article during 1 year and also only

speak in English rule from English class. It is obvious that all of the assignment in this class always

related to all of the skill that I need for IELTS. I’ve done all of listening, reading, writing and

speaking assignment. As a learner, the most effective learning strategies for me is to keep reading

until I understand it. Consequently, my strength is I’m not a person who easily give up but my

weakness is I’m really lack of confident to speak for shared my opinion to classmate and teacher

and writing because I’m really worry about grammar. In the future, I’m try to solve this problem

and continue to improve my writing and listening skill. Finally, comparing me as grade11 and

grade12 students are totally different especially my perspective. Now, I know that to become

success I have to start with believe in my ability and put a lot effort then, it will be possible to reach

the goal.
