Question 1. A 10m long, 400 mm diameter pile is driven in a uniform deposit of sand (Ø = 40o).
The water table is at a great depth and is not likely to rise. The average dry unit weight of sand is
20 KN/m3. Calculate the safe load capacity of the pile with factor of safety of 2.5.
[Adopt : Nq = 137, K=2 and δ= 0.75 Ø].

Question 2. Determine the allowable pile load capacity of the 40cm dia. Driven concrete pile
shown in fig.

Question 3. A 450 mm side square section concrete pile 15 m long is driven in a deep deposit of
uniform clay. The unconfined compressive Strength = 75 KN/m2. Calculate the ultimate load
capacity of pile. Take α = 0.8, γsat = 18 KN/m2 , γw = 10 KN/m2.

Question 4. Precast concrete pile of size 50 cm X 50 cm is to be driven into clay strata . The
unconfined compressive strength of which is 110 KN/m2. Compute the length of pile required to
carry safe working load of 450 KN with Factor of Safety= 2.5, α = 0.6.

Question 5. Design a pile group to carry 400 KN in clay with a unconfined strength of 60
KN/m2 . Adhesion Factor may be taken as 0.6. The piles are of size 300 mm and 6 m long.
Assuming F.O.S = 2.5.

Question 6. A group of nine piles, 12 m long and 250 mm in diameter, is to be arranged in a

square form in a clay soil with an average unconfined compressive strength of 60 KN/m 2. Work
Out the Centre to Centre spacing of the piles for a group efficiency factor of 1. Neglect bearing
at the tip of the piles.
