CE 372A:REINFORCED CONCRETE DESIGN

SEMESTER II: 2017-18

Homework #6: Design of RC Short Columns – Limit State Method

Due March 15, 2018

Prob.#1
The tied short column shown in figure is made of M25 concrete and
Fe415 steel. The eccentricity can be taken as 15 mm. The square
column section (350× 350 mm) is reinforced with 4-20 mm
longitudinal bars and 10 mm ties. Use a 40 mm clear cover to the
ties. Determine
a) the theoretical capacity of the column for pure axial load.
b) the maximum factored load that can be applied for the column.
c) the axial load and moment capacity of the column
corresponding to the balanced condition.

Prob.#2
Determine the longitudinal reinforcement (number of 20 dia bars of Fe415 grade) for a circular
column of diameter 450 mm subjected to a factored axial load of 1 500 kN. Also determine the
required spacing of helical (spiral) reinforcement of 8 mm dia. of Fe415 grade. Assume a clear cover
of 40 mm. Assume minimum eccentricity of 20 mm.

Prob.#3
The tied short column shown in figure is made of M25 concrete and
Fe415 steel. The column is reinforced with 8-25 mm longitudinal
bars and 10 mm ties. Use a 40 mm clear cover to the ties. Use a
strain compatibility solution to compute five points on the
interaction diagram corresponding to points A through F as
discussed in the class.

Prob.#4
Use the interaction diagrams in SP 16 :Design Aids o compute the maximum factored moment that
can be supported by the column shown in Prob. #1 if the factored axial load is 250 kN.

Prob.#5
For the square column size of 400 mm, design the required amount and distribution of longotudinal
reinforcement for the combination of factored axial load of 2000 kN and a moment of 150 kN using
the interaction diagrams in SP 16 :Design Aids. Assume concrete is M30, steel is Fe415, clear cover
is 40 mm and 10 mm bars used for ties.
