UNIT PLAN: Landforms and Landmasses

TOPIC OF LESSON: Maps and its Characteristics

PRE – KNOWLEDGE: Some students may know what is a map and where maps can be found

and their uses.

OBJECTIVES: Students will be able to:

1. Derive definition for the following term- map (Cognitive)- Understanding

2. Identify a map and its characteristics (Cognitive)- Understanding

3. Appreciate the importance of maps, as it relates to knowing their surroundings,

community and country (Affective) - Valuing

SET INDUCTION: Time allotted (3 mins)

Teacher will play a podcast recording of the paragraph on maps using the “Read Aloud”

reading strategy. Students will have to listen attentively to recording. Classroom will be

arranged in a horse shoe seating plan.


SECTION 1 – Time allotted 30mins
Teaching points:
(i) A map is a flat drawing of an area, place, country or community. A map gives an
idea of what an area looks like if seen from above.
(ii) A map must a scale, arrow showing direction, key or legend and title.
