Student Response and Assessment Tools

Lesson Idea Name: All About the 5 Senses

Content Area: Science
Grade Level(s): Kindergarten
Content Standard Addressed:
SKCS1. Students will be aware of the importance of curiosity, honesty, openness, and skepticism in science
and will exhibit these traits in their own efforts to understand how the world works.
Technology Standard Addressed:
5. Computational Thinker - Students develop and employ strategies for understanding and solving problems
in ways that leverage the power of technological methods to develop and test solutions.
Selected Technology Tool:
☒ Socrative ☐ iRespond ☐ Quizlet ☐ Plickers ☐ Kahoot! ☐ Office365 Forms
☐ Other:

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

The lesson mostly involves pictures of body parts as well as pictures of the items that match the
corresponding body parts. For visual learners the pictures will be helpful and I could also include the written
name of every body part and item for those students who are not as visual. The assignments will be student
paced so every child can go at their desired speed and there is no pressure to complete the assignment first.
Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity.

Introduction (15 minutes)

Tell the students you are going to talk about their five senses.
Ask if anybody can tell you the five senses.
Review the senses and what they do, then play the Five Senses video.
Have students just listen to the words, then play it again and allow them to join in with the singing.
Explicit Instruction/Teacher Modeling (15 minutes)
Create a chart
Give the students the chance to tell you what they know about their five senses.
Write down their answers on the chart.
A student will give you a sense and what it is used for. Another student will give you an example of that sense
being used.

Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):

Student Response and Assessment Tools
☒ Assess prior knowledge ☐ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☐ To illuminate common
misconceptions ☒ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) ☒ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☐ Test preparation
☐ Survey/Poll ☐ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity:

Guided Practice/Interactive Modeling (15 minutes)

Load Socrative assignment on interactive white board
Explain to students that they will be completing this assignment individually but you will be going over each
question together
Request students get their school iPads
Recite first question and allow students time to respond
After time is up allow a select number of students suggest what they believe the answer is and why
Reveal the correct answer and explain why it is correct
Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):
☒ Multiple choice ☐ Multiple select ☒ True/False ☐ Yes/No
☐ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10):

Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?

☒ Yes ☐ No
☐ Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)
Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
☒ Yes
☐ No
Why or why not?
All questions on my quiz have right and wrong answers. I want my students to see which answers are correct
and why they are correct. If the student is wrong they can then go back and see why they were wrong then
learn from their answers.
Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity?

Independent Working Time (10 minutes)

Have students complete a My Five Senses worksheets on their own.
Once all the students have completed the worksheet, have them check their answers with nearby peers.
Assessment (10 minutes)
Give each student a folded piece of paper.
Ask students to draw a picture for each sense in each box.
They should make sure to include the names of the senses as well.

How will the data be used?

This particular activity will not be graded. It is more for me to see where my student’s knowledge is on the 5
senses after the lesson. The graded portion will come from the assessment that comes later on in the lesson. I
will not share how the students did on the activity either due to the fact that we will all go over it together. At
the end I will see the results of each student and determine the best course of action for the class as a whole.

Student Response and Assessment Tools
The activity was designed to be harder than the assessment so students will find the assessment (the actual
graded part) easy when completing it.
Describe your personal learning goal for this activity.
From this activity I hope my students will be able to identify and describe the five senses. I have never used
Socrative so I hope I made the quiz interesting with my use of pictures and variety of questions. From this
activity I want to see how the students respond to the Socrative quiz. I will then apply my observations of
what does and does not work for the next time I use this assessment tool.
Reflective Practice:
I think I could incorporate the SMARTboard into the lesson more. I could have created a matching game
where the students matched the senses with the correct item. They could have each took turns coming up to
the board or it could have been played on their individual iPads. Overall I think there will be a positive impact
on my students. I think my students will learn about the 5 senses and retain the information for future use.
