8 Reliability
• Highly reliable
• No warning message to alert users that the heat roller within the fuser is nearing end of life
• Low rated developer yield
• Drums are completely exposed when replaced, leaving them vulnerable to damage

Test duration 2,000,000 impressions and 400,000 scans

Output/Scan misfeeds 14
Misfeed rate 1 per 142,857 pages
Service calls 2

At 1,693,402 impressions into the test, Xerox service was called for an image quality
issue (streaks on output). Service had to replace the feed rollers and the heat roller
within the fuser, both of which far exceeded their rated lives. However, there was no
warning message to alert users that these components were nearing end of life. The
fuser web, which is considered a user-replaceable part, had to be changed several
times throughout testing (see the User Maintenance section for details).

Another service call was required near the end of testing, at the 1,995,082-impression
mark. The device displayed an error message after replacing the drum cartridge, so BLI
technicians restarted it. But once rebooted, the device starting producing negative copies
(reverse black, white and grey). The issue was resolved by replacing the power supply.

• Xerox Global Print Driver allows users to print to different Xerox devices without installing multiple drivers.
• Limited USB printing capabilities may impact general office environments; does not support encryption or
the release of multiple files at once
• Print drivers lack a job review function and customization options
• Less flexible options for printing mixplex sets (a mix of duplex and simplex) than with most competitive
devices; limited to two sources and one set of exceptions

BLI technicians believe that the printer driver disk that came bundled with the device
was faulty, as the bidirectional functionality did not work even after installing the
disk on two separate workstations. When BLI technicians downloaded the latest
driver version from Xerox’s website, the bidirectional functionality finally worked.
Additionally, BLI technicians noted that it’s much easier to access the feedback function
from within the print drivers, rather than through the desktop taskbar icon (shown as
an arrow), which is only accessible after a print job has been sent to the device.

7 Productivity

6.5 PRINT PRODUCTIVITY

• Above average job stream performance from the PCL driver

• Fast first-print time from sleep mode during daily use
• Below average job stream performance from the PostScript driver

With a rated speed of 95 ppm, the D95 Copier/Printer’s well above average job stream
performance when using the PCL driver means that it can be counted on to better
handle typical print traffic in a busy office environment than most of the competition.
Although the device’s job stream performance using the PostScript driver was below
average, it delivered a fast recovery time from daytime sleep mode, and gave a
competitive performance when printing and multiple sets and single sets. First-print
times were competitive as well.

BLI’s job stream includes Word documents, Outlook email messages, Excel spreadsheets, PowerPoint, HTML and Acrobat PDF files, totaling 19 pages. This
test simulates the type of traffic a typical device might experience in a real-world, multiuser environment. All files are sent to the device as a group, at which
time the stopwatch begins; timing ends when the last page of the last file exits the device. Efficiency is determined by the percentage of the rated speed at
which the device operates when producing real-world jobs. The closer the rate is to 100%, or if it exceeds 100%, the more efficient the device.

Productivity is tested using a 10-page black document. BLI obtains the overall efficiency (percent of rated speed) for each mode by averaging
the efficiency ratings (derived by dividing the tested speed of the device by the rated speed and then multiplying by 100) for each run length
(one, five, ten and 20 sets). The unit was tested using the PCL driver.

7 SCAN PRODUCTIVITY

• Fast color and black duplex scan speeds

• Larger than average compressed color scan file size

The device’s scan speeds were faster than average in almost all modes tested; in fact,
it exhibited the fastest duplex speeds of its competitive group in both black and color
modes. However, large scan file sizes in color mode may cause issues when storing
and sending color files.

8 COPY PRODUCTIVITY

• Fastest first-copy times of the competitive group from both the document feeder and the platen
• Most productive model in the competitive group when copying a single set in both 1:1 and 1:2 modes
• Less productive than other models in the competitive group when copying a single set in 2:2 mode

In addition to its fast first-copy times, the D95 Copier/Printer’s speeds were faster than
the competitive average when copying multiple sets in 1:1 and 2:2 modes. This will
likely be appreciated by the high-volume environments this device is geared towards,
where long-run jobs are frequently processed. And though short-run jobs will be less
common in these types of environments, the device’s outstanding performance when
copying first sets in 1:1 and 1:2 modes is still worth noting.

7.5 Image Quality

7.5 PRINT QUALITY

• Smooth, fully formed text, smooth grayscale and dark solids

• Distinct separation between closely spaced fine lines, consistent line thickness and fully formed circles
• Moderate stair-stepping detected in diagonal lines; slight mottling noted in solids; grayscale lacked separa-
tion in the 90 to 100 percent levels

High-print-volume environments will likely appreciate the very good text quality
produced by the D95 Copier/Printer. Users can also rest assured that lines produced
in an Excel table, for example, will be distinct and consistent, and that solids in, for
example, a company logo will be dark. Additionally, the unit produced smooth
shading, with grayscale visible over most of the measured range.

• Full grayscale range with distinct separation between all levels

• Smooth, fully formed text; smooth grayscale; dark solids
• Distinct separation between closely spaced fine lines, consistent line thickness and fully formed circles
• Moderate stair-stepping evident in diagonal lines; slight banding noted in grayscale

The device’s shading capability in copy mode is excellent, with grayscale visible over
the entire measured range. This combined with dark solids means the device can be
counted on to handle not only office documents, but also graphics such as charts,
graphs and company logos. And as in print mode, copied text is clearly readable and
lines are distinct and consistent.

Drums are considered service-replaceable (although BLI technicians replaced them

in our test). For those who opt to replace the drums themselves, a trained, dedicated
operator, which is often employed in the types of environments this device is geared
towards, should handle the procedure, as they are hidden behind a cover, a screwdriver
is needed to access them, and once the cover is open, they are completely exposed,
leaving them vulnerable to damage.

BLI technicians feel that a dedicated operator or service technician should also
handle fuser web replacement (which had to be done three times throughout testing),
although this part is classified as user-replaceable. The procedure can be dangerous as
the web is very hot and needs to cool down for 50 minutes before it is handled. There
are instructions included inbox on how to change the web (which also warn users to
let it cool down before replacing), but a user can easily overlook and discard this. Also,
the terminology at the machine versus within the instructions doesn’t match, which
can be confusing; the error message presented onscreen states “replace cleaning web,”
while the instructions refer to the part as a “fuser cleaning unit.”

Test Procedures

Test Environment: This product was tested in BLI’s environmentally controlled US test lab, which replicates typical office
conditions.

Test Equipment: BLI’s dedicated test network, consisting of Windows 2008 and Microsoft Exchange servers, Windows 7
workstations, 10/100/1000BaseTX network switches and CAT6 cabling.

Test Duration: A single product is tested for two months, five weeks of which consists of a durability test during which the
product is run at its manufacturer-rated maximum monthly duty cycle, with 25 percent of the test volume comprised of copy
jobs and 75 percent comprised of print jobs. BLI’s daily test usage is designed to replicate real-world use over an eight-hour
workday, and as such includes a mix of various-size documents, simplex and duplex modes, and a mix of short, moderate and
long run lengths, and on/off cycles, throughout the day. The durability evaluation also includes testing of the document feeder/
scanner in simplex and duplex modes for an additional 10 percent of the monthly maximum volume, evenly divided over the
course of the test.

Tested Configuration: Xerox D95 Copier/Printer base unit with optional 4,000-sheet HCF, 3,000-sheet finisher, PDF scan kit,
USB enablement kit and gigabit Ethernet.

Test Procedures: BLI’s lab testing includes both BLI proprietary and industry-standard test procedures and documents.
In addition to a visual image quality evaluation, optical density of primary color (CMYK) solid fill output is measured using a
densitometer, and color gamut and consistency are evaluated using a color spectrophotometer. The reliability test is conducted
using Georgia Pacific and Boise paper in the US, and UPM, Data Copy and Mondi paper in the UK. In both labs, 30 percent of
the paper is recycled. The media used for image quality testing is Georgia Pacific Printing Paper (24 lb., 96 brightness) in the
US and UPM Future ImageTech 100 gsm in the UK.

Competitive Group: The analysis in this report compares the tested device to a group of all other currently available like models
(e.g., color vs. color, copied-based vs. copier-based) in the same speed range (within 10 ppm from the speed of the tested
device) with support for the same media size. For test performance categories, the results are compared with those of currently
available tested models in the group, whereas for feature set and pricing, the comparison is made against all currently available
models in the group, whether tested or not. The pricing analysis is for devices comparably configured with accessories and
