Preventing Falls for Older Farmers

The Federal Minister for Ageing, Mrs Justine Elliot recently launched a
guide aimed at reducing the number of serious and potentially fatal falls
experienced by Australian farmers over 55 while working on their farms.
Currently, around 30% of injury-related deaths are caused by falls. Falls can
result in admission to hospital, serious injury and are the most common cause
of early admission into premature aged care.

Updates from Head Office
New Member’s Login Section - 11 July
A new members area will be launched on
Friday 11 July. An integrated website, the
members only section provides members with
a calendar of events, forums and important
downloads. Now, you can visit any page on
the website, and return to the members area
without having to log in again.
From 11 July, the current forums will no longer
be available. Unfortunately it is not possible
to transfer the forums to the new website,
however, a hard copy of the forums will be
available from Head Office. This means that
new topics can be created and new ideas
discussed. The forums are a great way to chat
to other members from all over NSW, without
having to travel great distances.
To use this fantastic resource, visit the CWA of
NSW website and login using your membership
number and surname in the box on the right
hand side of every page. If you have problems
accessing the site, contact Head Office for
help.

Donate to the CWA of NSW Disaster Relief
Fund as part of your City2Surf Fundraising!
CWA of NSW has set up an online donation
system for participants in the City2Surf 2008, on
August 10.
To donate to the Disaster Relief Fund as part

Climate Solutions Award
The Climate Institute and the CWA of NSW are
sponsoring a Climate Solutions Award with a
prize of $1,400. Women must under 40 by the
30 March 2009, and be/become a member of
the CWA of NSW. This award will be running

CSIRO Report: Adapting Farming to Climate
Change
The CSIRO recently released a report that
outlines the impacts of climate change on
Australia and the consequences for our
agricultural industry.
Covering all topics from regional issues to
industry specific problems, the report gives an
overview of the adaptations required in the
Australian agricultural sector - impacts, options
and priorities - and expands on the 2003
national synthesis.

Foundation for Australian Agricultural
Women (FAAW)
Tele-Learning Seminars
To give women in regional and remote areas
access to quality presenters without leaving
home, FAAW has initiated the Tele-learning
Seminar Series, which will deliver a variety of

The tele-learning series will remove the burden
of long distance travelling and valuable time
away from home that women in rural and
remote areas generally undergo in order to
gain knowledge and information.

Telework
FAAW has teamed up with Monash University
to link employers with skilled women from rural
and remote areas who can work from home.
Known as teleworkers, they work from a distance,
outside a central office, either for an employer
or self-employed, using telecommunications.
Following a national research project which
found that women in rural and remote areas
were a highly skilled and educated labour
force, FAAW aims to identify and approach
industries with skill shortages that match those
available in rural areas.

Free Training for Rural and Regional Areas
Wave Learning are a Registered Training
Organisation based in Narellan and have
recently become an approved provider for the
Australian Government’s Productivity Places
Program.
As part of this initiative, Wave Learning has
approval to offer training as part of the
Productivity Places Program. Under this
program, they are able to offer nationally
accredited qualifications in the areas of
Children’s Services, Aged Care Work, Disability
Work and Home and Community Care as both
face to face and distance learning.

Hospital Nutrition Study: Why don’t modern
Western diets work?
The University of Sydney and Royal Prince Alfred
Hospital are looking for men and women who

consider themselves to be either normal-weight
or overweight to participate in a study on the
origins of weight gain on modern Western
diets. The study is designed to show that the
problems in our diets can be overcome by a
simple change in what we eat.
To qualify, you should be between 18 and
65 years old, in good general health, and
not currently smoking or on medications.

for their time.

A new website, About My Age,
is a community oriented website
specifically designed for the
over 50s to interact with similarly aged people

A newly-launched website about palliative
care, the CareSearch website, offers free,
quality, evidence-based information on

diseases, patient care and management.

Inquiry asks for Country Voters’ Views on
the 2007 Federal Election
The Electoral Matters Committee is seeking the
views of regional Australians on all aspects of
the 2007 Federal Election. The Committee is
interested in any issues or concerns regional

voters may want to raise about the 2007 Federal
Election, including enrolment, voting (including
postal voting), remote mobile polling, and
accessibility of polling places.

12,000 A Year Dying from Diabetes
Diabetes contributed to nearly 12,000 deaths
in 2005 according to the Australian Institute of
Health and Welfare (AIHW) report Australia’s
Health 2008. It is now one of the top five
underlying causes of death in men and in
the top seven for women. Complications can
affect the heart, kidneys, eyes, nervous system
and circulation.
The report states that the number of diabetics
in Australia has doubled in two decades. If
current rates continue this condition could
become the leading killer of Australians in
years to come. The Australian General Practice
Network said the report highlighted that 83 per
cent of Australians living with diabetes have
Type 2 diabetes.
Aged Care Nursing Scholarships
Royal College of Nursing, Australia
(RCNA) recently announced the
beginning of the Aged Care Nursing
Scholarship Scheme. The Scheme
is an Australian Government initiative that
is administered by RCNA. Scholarships are
available for undergraduate and postgraduate
applicants with a focus on aged care nursing.
Applications for the undergraduate scheme
close at 5pm on Friday 22 August 2008.
Applications for the postgraduate scheme
close at 5pm on Friday 19 September 2008.

Phillip Group of CWA of NSW have just
announced the Sylvia Osborne Memorial
Scholarships.
Available to students in Years 11 and 12 or

Indigenous Health: Closing the Gap for
Metropolitan Communities
The majority of Indigenous people live in heavily
settled areas, where they form a small minority
of the population. The issues associated with
Indigenous health in metropolitan communities
(and how to tackle them) will be addressed
at the “Indigenous Health: Closing the Gap
for Metropolitan Communities” being held by
the Menzies Centre for Health Policy and the

New England Rock n Roll and Swing Dance
Championships.
The cream of rock ‘n’ roll and swing dancers
from NSW, Queensland and New Zealand are
now preparing for the New England Rock ‘n’
Roll and Swing Dance Championships to be
held in Glen Innes on August 23 and 24. As the
largest rock and roll and swing dance event of
its kind in Australia, the organisers are expecting
to attract up to 600 people, with over 100 of

Jamberoo Branch: Opera in the Valley
Jamberoo Branch of the CWA is busy organising
another ‘Opera in the Valley’ in the newly
renovated School of Arts at Jamberoo. Jose
Carbo, world renowned baritone, will be back,
and the dates will be Friday 5th and Saturday
6th September at 8pm. Tickets will be on sale
at Elders’ R/E on 02 4236 0891 or at the Kiama
Visitors’ Centre in Kiama on 02 4232 3322 from
Tuesday 15 July. A delicious CWA supper is
included.
13 September
St George Branch
On Saturday 13th September, St George
Branch will be helping Rockdale Public School
celebrate its 125th Birthday. There will be stall at
the school, Dutch pancakes, coffee, ice cream
etc, together with pony rides, jumping castles
and other fun activities. St George Branch
CWA members will be selling raffle tickets at
the school with all money raised going to CWA.
