Teacher Efficacy and Practice in Meeting the Needs of Diverse Learners: How Do
Partnerships Support Teachers.
2013

In Teacher Efficacy, Beasley, Gartin, Lincoln, and Penner-Williams first address the
different definitions of a “diverse learner”. This could be because the student speaks a
primary language other than English, or that the child has special needs. Next, they
detail partnerships with schools that help make these learning environments welcoming
to students of all different learning styles. One of these partnerships was between a
school district in the mid-south and an in-service ESL professional development
program. The program gave training to all teachers in the state on how to better work
with their students that didn’t speak English as their first language. Finally, data was
collected to see how much teachers believed that they incorporated styles of teaching
that different types of learners needed. It showed that teachers did tend to shape their
teaching style to benefit the ESL students, but as much for the gifted students. This
article showed that there is a lot of work to be done to include students with different
learning styles.

Technology and Education Online Discussion Forums: It’s in the Response
2001

In Technology in Education, Markel first discusses how a virtual conference center is

used for online discussions for classes at Northern Arizona University. The discussion
board talks about how technology can be used as a tool and how it requires
responsibility from its students. Next, she talks about how these students must learn
how to work in a groups using the online tools. Not only is it advancing the students
ability to work with others, but it requires them to become familiar with a “web-based
environment”. Finally, this tool allows students to realize that they don’t always need to
go to their professors with questions. They can post questions on the discussion board
and allow their fellow classmates to answer them. This technology that was new to
these students was showing them how to advance their future careers by learning how
to combine successful work and the internet.
