​First Grade News ​  


Issue 31 April 27, 2018 
Reading   

This week in reading,  Math 


first graders began  This week in math, first 
the last reading unit  graders studied 
of the year! During  two-dimensional figures and 
this unit, we will study  patterns in Chapter 1 of 
characters and story  ThinkMath!. We practiced 
elements. In the  identifying the attributes of 
lessons this week,  two-dimensional figures 
first graders went on  (circles, triangles, squares, 
adventures with their  rectangles) and sorting by shape, color, and size. First

books to identify the  figures that had one or two differences.

Science 
  In Science, first graders 
learned about the water

two new trick words this week: ​none​ and ​nothing​.   more! We were so excited to enjoy time in the spring 
  sunshine this week!  
Writer’s Workshop   

This week in Writer’s Workshop, first graders 


practiced writing in a variety of ways. Many  ​Save the Date   
students wrote journal entries about their 
May 11th:​ ​Mitchell School Pajama Day 
April Break. This was a great review of small 
May 24th​: Early Release 
moment writing! Throughout the week, some 
May 28th​: NO SCHOOL (Memorial Day) 
first graders also wrote poems, worked on 
publishing their reviews, and much more! We 
are excited to begin our last writing unit, 
From Scenes to Series​,​ very soon!
