Greetings From Our Regional Director

Megan Newton Hello Everyone!
Thank you all for the kind welcome as your new Regional Director for the
fabulous Western Region! I am truly excited for this new role. I would like to take
the time to introduce myself a bit more.
I have had the pleasure of working with Darden Bradshaw for the past two years
as the RD Elect for our region. I learned a significant amount from her and have
been most inspired by her drive and commitment to our region. Prior to becoming
RD Elect I served our Western region as the regional exhibitions chair where I
worked with the YAM/YPAE work. From there I took on the role as YAM Flag
and Graphics chair at the state level. This was an exciting experience as I was
able to participate in the OAEA state board meetings. Then, Lindsay Gustafson and I co-chaired
the Young People’s Art Exhibition for the state level. This was an eye opening experience for me!
From there I said goodbye to Lindsay as I chaired the YPAE state exhibit for an additional two
years. I am thankful to have such strong women in my life who have helped show me the greatness
of OAEA!
I teach eighth grade art at Miamisburg Middle School. Yes, only eighth grade. Yes, we have
one art teacher per grade level and it is amazing! I truly feel supported by my district in the arts. I
am a TAB (Teaching for Artistic Behavior) educator and have loved meeting others who are enjoy-
ing TAB as well.
TAB is a progressive pedagogy that is student-oriented. Students are in control of their material
and subject matter. The TAB teacher takes a facilitator role and allows the student the freedom to
develop their own artistic process. For more information about TAB I recommend searching for the
numerous TAB groups on Facebook. I also love to talk about TAB so please feel free to email me for
more information - westrd@ohioarted.com or mnewton@miamisburg.k12.oh.us
In January the Western region board met to discuss all the exciting opportunities coming up
this year. Darden Bradshaw has some truly wonderful workshops planned for the early fall so
please stay tuned for this information. Our K-12 Summer Show is back this year as well! Special
thanks to Joan Lucas and Alexis Gentry for taking on this role as they start to organize this event.
We look forward to revamping this show in hopes to encourage more advocacy for our region and
our students.
At conference we were able to choose some fabulous people to represent our region as state
awardees. Congratulations to our Outstanding Art Teachers, Jessica Evans and Melanie Huffman.
Gracie Sandaris will be representing our region as the Distinguished Citizen. Jeff McPheran has
been chosen by our region as the Distinguished Educator. We also congratulate the Rosewood Arts
Centre who was voted by our region as the Distinguished Business/Organization. Morgan Bukovec
was also nominated for the Student Division award at the state level. All awardees will be recog-
nized at our Summer Awards Luncheon which is hosted by our RD Elect, Lindsay Gustafson and
Awards Chair, Ben Davis. We are so fortunate to have so many inspiring educators and businesses
in the Western region!
Lastly, I would like to reach out to the region to find out how we can better serve our mem-
bers. What type of workshops would you like to see this year? Are there other ways WOAEA can
help you advocate for your art program and your students? Would you like more opportunities to
share your own personal art work or that of your students? Would you like to serve on the WOAEA
board? We have several positions available plus you’ll be able to gain some graduate credit! Please
email westrd@ohioarted.com if you have any suggestions, ideas, or want to serve with us on the
WOAEA board.
I hope your early spring time is full of relaxation, great weather, and some fabulous art op-
portunities to refresh your soul. Artfully, Megan Newton

Paula’s Corner

We are on to the 2nd edition of the Art corner! For those that
missed the 1st…This is a new corner of Hues News where any cool
ideas, websites, hacks, quotes and questions will be addressed. I have
been teaching for 23 years and always looking for easier, more efficient ways of
doing things. If you’re a new teacher or experienced teacher, we all seem to have
similar situations that we may need advice on…hopefully this corner will
help! Email any comments, suggestions or questions to ptreisch@ccliff.org and we
will put it in Paula’s Corner.
If you are like me and have a zillion pieces of yarn in a box that look like this and
are wondering what to do with it…have helpers(students that finish early) wrap
toilet paper tubes with 2 arm lengths of yarn. Stu-
dents then slide it off and put the tube in a bag to
be reused.
Art project ideas: Jackson Pollock Yarn Bowls,
free choice day for them to make necklaces or
bracelets, Branch loom weavings, yarn printing
(glue strands to cardboard, let dry, print), make
tassels, birds nest collage, students can wrap(glue)
them around toilet and paper towel rolls and
when put thru a broom handle they create a beau-
tiful sculpture, stuffing for a soft sculptures,
Huichol yarn paintings, braiding stations, study Annie Greene
(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=830_b2XSPq4), study the un-artist Judith
Scott (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=46LdVzWoNhI&app=desktop) –great
story!!!!
Great resource website: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/ (Teachers pay
Teachers) If you have not checked out the different art sections, you are missing
out. Not only awesome plans and handouts, but your money goes to helping other
art teachers. That’s a win-win in my book!
