ERT 250 – DYNAMICS

ASSIGNMENT 1

Kinematics of Particles

1) The motion of a particle is defined by the relation x  t 3  9t 2  24t  8 where, x and t

are expressed in meters and seconds, respectively. Determine
a. The time when the velocity is zero.
b. The position and the total distance travelled when the acceleration is zero.

2) Automobiles A and B are traveling in adjacent highway lanes and at t = 0 have the
positions and speeds shown. Knowing that automobile A has a constant acceleration
of 0.54 m/s2 and that B has a constant deceleration of 3.6 m/s2, determine
a. When and where A will overtake B.
b. The speed of each automobile at that time.

3) The elevator shown in the figure moves downward with a constant velocity of 4 m/s2.
Determine,
a. The velocity of the cable C,
b. The velocity of the counterweight W,
c. The relative velocity of the cable C with respect to the elevator,
d. The relative velocity of the counterweight W with respect to the elevator.

4) Slider block A moves to the left with a constant velocity of 6 m/s. Determine,
a. The velocity of block B,
b. The velocity of portion D of the cable,
c. The relative velocity of portion C of the cable with respect to portion D.

5) A basketball player shoots when she is 5 m from the backboard. Knowing that the
ball has an initial velocity vo at an angle of 30o with the horizontal, determine the
value of vo when d is equal to
a. 225 mm
b. 425 mm

Kinetics of Particles: Newton’s Second Law

6) The acceleration due to gravity on the moon is 1.62 m/s2. Determine

a. The weight in Newton’s,
b. The mass in kilograms, on the moon, of a gold bar, the mass of which has been
officially designated as 2 kg.

7) Block A has a mass of 40 kg, and block B has a mass of 8 kg. The coefficients of
friction between all surfaces of contact are µk = 0.15. If P = 40 N  determine
a. The acceleration of block B,
b. The tension of the cord.

8) Block B of mass 10 kg rest as shown on the upper surface of a 22 kg wedge A.

Knowing that the system is released from rest and neglecting friction, determine
a. The acceleration of B,
b. The velocity of B relative to A at t = 0.5 s.

9) A 450 kg tetherball A is moving along a horizontal circular path at a constant speed 4

m/s. Determine
a. The angle θ that the cord forms with pole BC,
b. The tension in the cord.
10) A series of small packages, each with a mass of 0.5 kg, are discharged from a
conveyor belt as shown. Knowing that the coefficient of static friction between each
package and the conveyor belt is 0.4, determine
a. The force exerted by the belt on a package just after it has passed Point A,
b. The angle θ defining the Point B where the packages first slip relative to the
belt.
