Instructional Procedures
Focusing Event: Ask students to help you find out what some contractions mean such as
“y’all”, “don’t” and “we’ll”. Ask them to think about a time when they use contractions in their
speech.

Teaching/ Learning Procedures: Pull out the anchor chart that was made for contractions.
Have students help you create some of the contractions. Use I do, we do, you do using the white
boards to show the teacher if they are getting the correct answers.

Formative Check (ongoing or specific): Students will pretend to be surgeons, having to

perform surgery on two words and combining them to become one word attached with a bandaid
and an apostrophe. Students will then glue them into their surgery booklet and then underneath
will practice spelling the contraction themselves. Teacher will go around the class checking if
students are performing the correct surgeries.

Reteach (alternative used as needed): Have students come to the front of the class and
write the contraction when given two words. Have them show which letters they are getting rid
of and replacing with an apostrophe. Have students phone a friend if they need help.

Closure: As an exit ticket, students will write a sentence using a contraction.

Assessment/Summative Evaluation: Attached is a story, students will each get a copy and
they will write the contractions for each bolded and underlined word.

________________________________________________________________________
Modifications/Notes:
Dysgraphia: Allow student to have more time to take their summative assessment and anytime
they have to write for themselves. Depending on the severity, student may type their answers as
well.
Autism: Let student know what the class will be doing today ahead of time. Because this activity
has a lot of activity, the class may be a little louder than usual, this may cause the student to shut
down, have frequent breaks for them this day. Have visual and oral instructions presented to the
student.
Visual Impairment: For the assessment, have a larger font printed out for the student. Student
will have priority seating in the large group activity.
Third Grade

It is the last day of summer vacation, and

I am nervous about tomorrow. I will be in third

grade and my big sister told me that third grade

is really hard, but mom keeps telling me it will be

okay. My best friends are Sally and George and

we are hoping that we will be in the same class

again this year. George said that he is nervous

also but Sally said she is not. We still do not

know who our teachers are but we cannot wait to

meet them!
