RU Teacher Education Lesson Plan Format

Lesson Title/Topic: Personal Narrative

Standards:
1.13 The student will write to communicate ideas for a variety of purposes.
a) Generate ideas.
b) Focus on one topic.

2.12 The student will write stories, letters, and simple explanations.
a) Generate ideas before writing.
b) Organize writing to include a beginning, middle, and end for narrative and expository writing.

Specific Observable Objective(s):​ The students will demonstrate their understanding of


stretching their sentences by adding detail and formatting their draft

Assessment:​ graphic organizer, draft


Students will demonstrate an understanding of stretching their sentences by adding details based
off of their graphic organizer. They will then draft a first copy of their personal narrative.

Student Considerations: ​The teacher will accommodate special needs learners by creating a
learning environment consistent with Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles. Students
with specific challenges will be accommodated consistent with Individualized Instructional Plan
(IEP or 504 Plan) requirements, and through the use of Assistive Technology (AT) devices as
required.

Graphic Organizer

PROCEDURES:
The Beginning (a.k.a. Anticipatory Set):
Review of hand stories and how last week we used the graphic organizer to began to
format the story. Hand back their graphic organizers.

The Middle: (Specify time)


Direct Instruction (mini-lesson): ​Using anchor chart and graphic organizer, we will teach
students how to stretch sentences by adding details.
Independent Practice: ​Students will fill out the graphic organizers to stretch the beginning,
middle, and end of the stories which is found on the worksheet the previous week.

Direct Instruction (mini-lesson): ​Using the graphic organizer on stretching sentences, we will
instruct and demonstrate how to transfer the story onto paper for their the first draft.

Independent Practice: ​Students will draft their story using the graphic organizer on stretching
sentences.

The End (a.k.a. Closing): ​Have students share their drafts, collect drafts, and summarize what we
learned
