DAILY PLAN
Lesson Title: Animal masks Pt. 2 Grade Level: 1st grade

S & S Statements: This lesson is an extension to learning how to create a 3-D mask working from a
2-D design. The students will be given creative freedom to choose what
colors and geometric shapes they want to incorporate into an animal mask
they previously designed on construction paper.

Concepts and Skills: Students will be able to work from their 2-D design to create a 3-D mask
portraying the visual elements of a specific animal face. The students will
exercise their understanding of the composition by including 3 different
geometric shapes and an element extending off the mask using construction
paper. The students will also identify where the eyes belong the mask by cutting
out the eye holes proportionately.

Vocabulary: Design, geometric

Purpose of Lesson (Overall Lesson Objective): Students will carefully create a detailed mask using
a minimum of 3 different geometric shapes and an element extending off the mask out of construction
paper onto a paper plate while incorporating accurate animal characteristics made in their 2-D design.

Objectives: Students will accurately use of a variety of geometric shapes and an extending element
in order to create a successful composition. Students will be expected to successfully translate their 2-
D design onto their 3-D mask.

Assessment Criteria:
1. Accurately create a mask proportionate to the face.
2. Incorporate the animal characteristics from their 2-D designs onto their 3-D animal masks.
3. Successfully convey their chosen animal characteristics with a minimum of 3 geometric shapes
and an extending element on their animal masks.

Teaching Resources Needed to Support the Lesson:

A PowerPoint presentation will be projecting images of both:
African masks; productive example of combining animal features with the human face
Animal faces; provides inspiration for what animal they want to portray

Physical examples of our own animal masks incorporating a minimum of 3 geometric shapes and an
extending element out of construction paper to portray our animal of choice.

Art Materials Necessary for the Lesson: Construction paper, glue stick, scissors, pencil, paper plate

Introduction: Introduction:
We will begin the class with a demonstration of how The students will watch and be involved in the
to work from the 2-D mask designs created last class demonstrations, and they will then be asked to
to assemble a 3-D animal mask using a paper plate work from their 2-D designs when creating their

The students will learn how helpful having a detailed
2-D design is when creating a 3-D project. We will
then demonstrate how to fold the paper plate in half
and cut out eye holes so they are proportionate.

Development: Development:
We will guide the students on how to use their ideas Students will look off of their 2-D mask designs
