The importance of the seatrial

THE BEGINNING OF A NEW ERA

Sea Trial
A proper sea trial is an important tool for:

• Setting correct values for Auto Trim, Auto List, C-Turn and Active for best performance!
• To show the Customer the benefits using a Humphree system:
- Speed & Fuel consumption
- Visibility
- Comfort when running with the right trim & Comfort during turns
- Turn radius improvements
- Stabilisation performance

• Important to record (manually or with computer) the improvements

• To produce a sea trial report that includes settings to be used for other identical boats
• To produce a reference sheet for the webpage

• Increased sales as a result of the great improvements achieved!

THE BEGINNING OF A NEW ERA

Step 1: Preparation
Sea Trial
• Check HCU orientation and reset trim/list to 0.
Boat must be at zero list

• Take basic data: Displacement, load condition, number of crew, Fuel, water and
so on. Conditions during the sea trial, wind speed!
Engines and propulsion system, power, engine rpm scale
(600-2300rpm ; 600-3700 rpm…)

• Use a printed “Sea Trial” data sheet!

THE BEGINNING OF A NEW ERA

Step 1: Preparation
Sea Trial
• If system have Coordinated Turn:

- Calibrate Rudder positions before you go out for

sea trial
- Many cases: Not correct interface
- Other system may need to be switched ON to
receive rudder position

• Take photo of installation and of the boat so that the

complete boat is included!
THE BEGINNING OF A NEW ERA

Use the data sheet

THE BEGINNING OF A NEW ERA

Sea Trial
Step 2: Auto Trim

• Try to find calm waters!

• Start at top speed

- Run the boat at full engine rpm and interceptors fully retracted (0).
- Run for some time to get constant data (20 seconds)
- Write down: Engine rpm, Fuel burn (L/H or G/H), SOG, Trim angle
- Deploy interceptors 10% and check if speed increase or decrease.
If speed increases, write down same data again for the 10% deployment condition.
- Deploy to 20, 30, 40 …. Until speed decrease instead of increase.

• Generally – do not set trim angles lower than what is set at top speed (4deg at top, stay above 4 deg lower down)
THE BEGINNING OF A NEW ERA

Sea Trial
Step 2: Auto Trim

• Depending of engine rpm range, run boat at max. steps of around 5 knots (2200 rpm,
2000rpm, 1800, 1600, 1400, 1200, 1000, idle) and for each rpm write down the data as
mentioned above!

• For each engine rpm, there is an interceptor position that provides best results (could
also be 0).
Note: The best interceptor deployment for speed, may not be the best for the running
condition (slamming, water on wind screen and so on, consider!)

Created data sheet

Sea Trial
Step 2: Auto Trim Speed %deployment
4 0
• In the Auto Trim menu, put in the appropriate interceptor stroke for each speed. 6 0
Between the “speeds”, soften the curve. 8 50
10 62
• Write down the exact data in the Auto Trim Curve just created! To be saved!

Sea Trial
Step 3: Auto Trim Confirmation

• Test drive with the Auto Trim curve made!

• Adjust if needed!

Step 4: Auto List

• Check that the auto list operates properly and that the boat runs at 0.
If not, the “list angle” may need to be reset (boat must be at 0 list)

• If boat trims very low, check that boat perform well at high speed (not nervous)
If nervous, lower sensitivity or adjust Auto Trim curve to lift the bow.
Normally – leave at 0.

• Common problem: If incorrect operation – cables to servo motors could be inverted!

THE BEGINNING OF A NEW ERA

Sea Trial
Step 5: Coordinated Turn

• Default is Gain 100% (100% rudder = 100% interceptor) Possible -200 to 200
• Gain 50% means 50% interceptor at 100% rudder position
• Gain 25% means 25% interceptor at 100% rudder
• Gain 200% means 100% interceptor already at 50% rudder

Sea Trial
Step 5: Adjusting Coordinated Turn

• Check how the boat handles when turning to avoid dangerous testing. Speed Gain
4 0
• Run the boat at different speeds and give full rudder, start with lower speeds.
Adjust Gain if the boat needs more or less interceptor. 6 0
8 50
• Normally you easily feel when it is “good enough”! 10 70
12 90
• In high speed (over 30 knots), you may need to lower the gain 14 105
16 120
• - V shaped monohulls usually need lift on inner interceptor 18 120
- Monohulls with keel could need the opposite! 20 105
22 100
• Create a Gain table!
24 95
26 85
28 75
30 65
32 60
34 55
36 50

Sea Trial
Step 6: Free driving

• With Auto Trim, Auto List and Coordinated Turn “ON” drive the boat making an
acceleration, running in cross wind and turning. Check that it performs well!
THE BEGINNING OF A NEW ERA

ACTIVE - Sea Trial

• Need of waves for setup!

• Find a good test speed between 15 and 25 knots

• Within 15-25 knots - choose a speed where Auto Trim position is between 40 and 60% preferably.

• Interceptors can then both retract and extend around Auto trim position

• Run boat beam sea (waves from side)

THE BEGINNING OF A NEW ERA

ACTIVE - Sea Trial

• Wave size:
For good results, the waves shall make the boat heel so it really feels (40ft +-8°deg, 70ft less)

• Adjust Roll sensitivity

Adjust Roll sensitivity (probably increase) so that the interceptors just reach:
15 knots Shall reach 100% extension
25 knots Shall reach 90% extension
Verify at other speed 15-25 knots

• Test – most important is to achieve a good feeling – good difference between ON / OFF

• Try to find calm waters and run with ACTIVE - ON.

The boat should perform nicely and the interceptors should be ”steady”

• Adjust Pitch sensitivity

Generally leave at 0
- Note that the pitch damping will take power from the roll
(A lower pitch sensitivity is positive for roll performance)
THE BEGINNING OF A NEW ERA

ACTIVE - Sea Trial

Measure performance

• Seakeeper App. 10 minutes ON, 10 minutes ON

- Makes sure to run ”identical”

• Humphree Configurator

• Auto Pilot function

- Check Auto pilot function
- Reduce gain ?

Recommended
For boats in need of a large help to
Quick Guide (15 min)
get over the hump. Will give best
ACTIVE stabilisation performance. If
space allows, select this. Boat Size Recommended Trim & List List

Trim & List 23-27 ft X300 X300 X300

Will handle Trim & List well. Will work 28-33 ft X450 X300 X300
for ACTIVE but lower level of 34-39 ft X600 X450 X300
stabilisation performance compared to 40-44 ft X750 X600 X450
”recommended” can be expected. 45-49 ft X750 X600 X450
If the boat runs really stern heavy 50-54 ft H900 or HE750 X750 X450
(high trim), try to fit a larger size. 55-59 ft H1000 or HE750 X750 X600
60-64 ft H1200 or HE800 H900 or HE750 X600
List: 65-69 ft H1300 or HE900 H1050 or HE800 X750
If the boat trims nicely without the 70-74 ft H1500 or HE1000 H1100 or HE850 X750
help of trim tabs, the table ”list” can
be used. The size will handle List (heel)
and the trim can be adjusted to a
certain level. Lower performance with
ACTIVE shall be expected.
