FACULTY OF
HUMANITIES & SOCIAL SCIENCES
Message from the Dean
Dr. Akmal Hussain, D.Phil. in Economics from the University of Sussex, U.K.

The School of Humanities and Social Sciences at ITU is being established at

a turning point in world history; the environmental crisis, growing income
inequalities and violence, all these are threatening state structures. This
multifaceted crisis presents a new challenge to the social sciences to move out
of the narrow, isolated confines of individual disciplines, to develop a holistic
understanding of the threats to society and indeed life itself. Grasping these
phenomena will involve not only rigorous analytical skills but also the development
of a humane sensibility through exposure to various subjects in the Humanities.
That is why our School imparts interdisciplinary training to students
in selected subjects in the Social Sciences, Humanities and the
emerging field of Data Science. We call upon citizens of Pakistan
and the world to join us in the great endeavor of actualizing their
talents and then bring to bear their love and knowledge to help
build a better future.

MS Development Studies:
Development, Technology and Policy
MS Development Studies: Development, Technology
and Policy (MS Dev.) has been designed as a holistic and
multidisciplinary program to make positive and economically
effective contributions in the society. MS Development Studies
is an impactful discipline which aims at dealing with the
challenging social and economic indicators: poverty, inequality
and economic growth.
Learning Outcomes
MS Dev. at the Information Technology University allows meaningful conversations between economists, anthropologists,
social and political scientists and also those in hard sciences i.e. computer scientists and IT experts, to foster a mentality of
innovation, leadership and action.
Graduates will gain knowledge around big data techniques which in turn will enable evidence-based design of
development policy. Students would go on to become future leaders; demonstrating excellent skills in government sectors,
international development agencies, consultancies and think tanks and participating in cutting-edge policy debates and
implementing effective solutions across the globe.

Career Prospects
Development studies is an expansive field and offers ample opportunities for employment. The skills taught during this
program are transferrable across different fields and puts the graduates at a great employment stead:
● Government Sectors I.e. Health, Education, Agriculture
● International Donor Agencies i.e. DFID, USAID, UNDP, World Bank, International Labor Organization etc.
● NGOs, Consultancies, Civil Services
● Actuarial and Data Analysis in Economics firms
● Academic Institutions, both local and international

Dr. Adnan Noor Mian,
MS Computer Science
PhD. Sapienza University of Rome, Italy The MS Computer Science program at the Information Technology
University is distinguished by the excellence of its faculty, focus on
research, and by the breadth of its curriculum. The MS CS program
The CS Department at ITU has
focuses keenly on exposure to cutting-edge fields including Data
been accelerating innovation in
science, Scientometrics, Design Lab, Internet of Things, NLP, and
the areas of science, technology
Speech Processing and Deep Learning.
and engineering since its inception
in 2012. Our programs focus on
solving everyday problems through
applied research; we are nurturing a
distinct environment for research and
development. Learning Outcomes
MS CS has been designed keeping in view two core objectives:

To provide a technical and rigorous course of study, and

afford exposure to cutting-edge concepts to motivated
knowledge seekers and researchers

To offer opportunities to study the philosophical and

theoretical foundations underlying the discipline
Career Prospects
The MS Computer Science program aims to cater to the
shortfall of highly qualified professionals with specific
training in the field of computing. This need is not
restricted to Pakistan, but in fact, spans the globe. The
program has a clear commitment to the needs of the local
industry, hence the learning offered is specially designed
for highly focused positions in the computer sector.
The program revolves around using innovative applied
research to solve real world problems.
PhD in Computer Science
The post-graduate research program, PhD Computer Science, at the Information Technology
University ensures research and learning according to international standards. Therefore, it
will be a significant step towards reducing Pakistan›s reliance on developed countries for
higher education in the disciplines of computer science and information technology. The
purpose of the PhD Program in Computer Science is to allow graduating students to attain
theoretical and practical depth in one of the areas of interest within Computer Science. This
degree prepares graduates for a career in the Computer Science field with strong focus on
solving real world problems.

Learning Outcomes
The PhD Computer Science degree is designed to prepare students for
careers in research and development, as well as for conducting independent
research at the university level. The aim of this graduate program is to
prepare professionals who can:

● Demonstrate independent thinking and strong technical knowledge in their

field so that they can lead and direct projects in their chosen field of study
● Demonstrate the ability to learn independently and generate new knowledge
● Reach the highest academic level with the potential to become a leader and
expert in their field of study

Career Prospects
After a doctoral degree in Computer Science, ITU students fall in the
valuable category of knowledge creators. Subsequently, they may seek
to enhance the world of learning by furthering research in new areas,
applying themselves in academia or working in R&D in any industry of their
choosing, ranging from Aerospace to Finance. Alternate careers include
consulting, research and development within both public and private
sector, tech-entrepreneurship, quant-finance scientist, operations research
data scientist and machine learning.
MS Data Science
The MS Data Science program at the Information Technology University has been designed keeping in
mind the gap between data science applications and the demand for the same within the industry. We live
in an age of «information explosion», and data science enables the analysis and application of complex data
through automated analytical tools, by sifting meaningful information from the noise.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the degree, students will:

● Possess advanced knowledge of the field of data science

● Be able to apply major theories in the field of data analysis to solve
non-trivial problems
● Demonstrate a depth of understanding consistent with the
industry requirements
● Be able to review and critically evaluate data science projects
● Have the ability to plan and propose new methodologies to solve
problems

Career Prospects
The opportunities for Data Science specialists are practically
unlimited. Data has swept into every industry and business
function, and may be termed the most prominent factor defining
success, apart from capital and labor. Data Scientists have been
rated among the most desired resources in America for 2017,
with a median base salary of $110, 00. (Source: Glassdoor). Career
opportunities include data scientist, data engineer, data analyst,
statistician, data manager, data architect, business analyst.

Some of the industries employing data scientists include:

IT Services Business and Finance Pharmaceutical
