1 General notes
These brief instructions for the ISTA Launcher describe the basic functionalities of the ISTA

Launcher 1.0, which is being rolled out for the first time with ISTA 3.50.

2 Prerequisites
 The ISTA Launcher requires .NET Framework 4.5.1. or higher. .NET Framework in
version 4.5.1 is available from the Microsoft website http://www.microsoft.com/de-
de/download/details.aspx?id=42642. Alternatively .NET Framework 4.5.2 can also be
installed via https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=42642.
If the user tries to install ISTA directly, various fault messages can occur.

 Administrator rights are required to install .NET Framework, the ISTA Launcher and
ISTA.
 Have the access data for your shared storage ready. This data varies depending on the local
configuration and is known to the respective ISPI administrator.
 Before the installation of ISTA the available disk space on c:\ is compared to the disk space

3 Installation of ISTA Launcher

From version 3.50 onwards, ISTA can only be installed using the ISTA Launcher.

Therefore the ISTA Launcher must be installed first. Manually executing the installation file is

only necessary for an initial installation. If this is not an initial installation, the ISTA Launcher

will be installed automatically via ISTA 3.49.xx.

The ISTA Launcher is rolled out as a separate package and can therefore be found on the

shared storage. In order to activate the installation manually, simply double click on the file

"BMW_ISPI_ISTA-Launcher_XXX.msi" on the shared storage.

If an old ISTA version is already installed on the device, the ISTA Launcher
installation takes 15-25 minutes, since any old (< 3.50) ISTA installation is
uninstalled during the installation! If ISTA was not previously installed or if you
are updating the ISTA Launcher later, the installation only takes a few
seconds.

Following successful installation, the ISTA Launcher is started immediately and is visible via a

tray symbol. The ISTA Launcher is also entered in Startup. Therefore it will start itself every

time a user logs on.

The main window of the ISTA Launcher can now be displayed by double clicking on the tray

symbol.

If ISTA is not installed, the following is visible:

Clicking on "Close" minimises the graphic interface. The ISTA Launcher is not closed! The

graphic interface can be reopened at any time by double clicking on the tray symbol.

4 Initial installation of ISTA 3.50

Clicking on "Install ISTA" displays a dialogue. This detects which packages are now being

installed (here using the example of language channel 0009 – German and English). Clicking

on "OK" starts the update process. It is not possible to subsequently stop the installation!

Depending on the local device and rights configuration, you may be asked for the access data

for your shared storage before this dialogue is displayed. The access data is known to the ISPI

administrator and is only required once here. It is not necessary to re-enter the data when

installing further software updates.

In the progress window you can observe which installation step is currently being carried out.

Clicking on the "Close" button minimises the progress dialogue. This can be displayed again

by double clicking on the tray symbol. The "OK" button remains greyed out until the

installation is completed.

Following successful installation an information dialogue appears.

An initial installation of ISTA using the ISTA Launcher including German and English language

package takes approx. 40 minutes (with 100 Mbit LAN + SSD). A software update takes about

10 minutes longer. The installation times can vary considerably depending on the end device

and network connection (e.g. WLAN).

5 Update procedure from ISTA 3.50 onwards

Software updates can now be carried out automatically or manually (explicitly) using the ISTA

Launcher. The various software update options are described below. Regardless of the update

procedure chosen, the following marginal conditions must be observed to ensure a successful

installation:

 The ISTA application is closed.

 ISTA cannot be started during a software update.
 No outstanding restart requests due to other installations.
 No other applications are being installed in parallel.
 Stable network connection (minimum 100 Mbit LAN recommended).
 Automatic change to Windows standby mode is deactivated.

5.1 Automatic software updates

The ISTA Launcher supports the automatic installation of software updates. In order to

activate this functionality, change to the ISTA Launcher in the "Configuration" tab.

Subsequently the "Update time" and "Update day(s)" can be set.

Using these settings you can now select on which days and at which times an ISTA update

should be automatically installed (if one is available). Then you must confirm the selection by

clicking on "Activate auto update".

It may be necessary to update the ISTA Launcher before updating ISTA. This software update

is carried out shortly before the specified time and does not affect your work.

These settings must be made separately for each device. We do not recommend that you

make the same update settings on all your devices, but rather that you vary the days or times

to avoid a possibly very high network load. As soon as an update is automatically started, it

cannot be stopped. Once completed, a functional, updated ISTA including all necessary data is

available to you.

5.2 Manual software updates

As well as automatic software updates, ISTA updates can also be carried out manually. It is

possible to check for the availability of software updates at any time by clicking on "Check for

software updates". If a software update is available, a query appears asking if it should also be

installed immediately.

A check for updates is also carried out regularly in the background. If a software update is

available, a tooltip appears over the ISTA Launcher tray symbol.

6 ISTA Launcher Information tab

The Information tab in the ISTA Launcher displays which packages are currently installed on

the device:

As an additional function, you can also activate a repair installation in the Information tab.

Clicking on "Repair the installation" reinstalls the latest available ISTA software version.

7 Frequently asked questions

7.1 When starting an installation or a software update, an input

dialogue appears requesting user data. What should I enter here?

Response: This input dialogue appears if the ISTA Launcher cannot access your shared storage

which is set up in the ISPI Admin Client. This fault message may also appear, even if the

shared storage is connected as a Windows drive. Here please enter the user data of a user,

who has read access to your shared storage. This query only appears once per device.

This dialogue will not be displayed if you are logged on with admin rights or if your shared

storage is not access-protected.

7.2 The dialogue requesting user data crashes using user data with

space character
When entering the user name with space character, e.g. ‘ISTA USER’ the following
message appears:

7.3 The ISTA Launcher crashed or did not start automatically. How can I

start it manually?

Response: In this case you can restart the ISTA Launcher by clicking on the file C:\Program

Files (x86)\BMW\ISPI\TRIC\ISTALauncher\ISTALauncher.exe (for 64-bit operating system)

or C:\Program Files\BMW\ISPI\TRIC\ISTALauncher\ISTALauncher.exe (for 32-bit

operating system).

7.4 I changed my shared storage in the ISPI Admin Client. The ISTA

Launcher is still trying to read from the old shared storage.

Response: After changing the shared storage path you must log off in Windows and then log

on again. The ISTA Launcher then restarts and receives the new path from the ISPI Admin

Client.

7.5 I am getting the fault message that a package is not enabled for

me. What can I do now?

Response: In this case, please contact your market responsible.

7.6 The ISTA Launcher is displaying that no update is available although

I can see a newer ISTA version in the software catalogue.

Response: In order for a software update to be displayed in the ISTA Launcher, all the

packages of a software update must be available on your shared storage. The ISTA Launcher

only displays a software update once all the required packages are available on your shared

storage. If necessary, check in the ISPI Admin Client whether packages are still being

downloaded.

7.7 The software update does not start automatically at the time I

specified

Response: Please ensure that the end device is not in standby mode at the specified time.

ISTA must also be closed before installing a software update! The ISTA Launcher does not

close ISTA automatically.

7.8 ISTA Launcher is not visible in the windows tray

Respone: Please reinstall the ISTA Launcher.
